The scientific method is an organized way that helps anyone answer a question or begin to solve a problem. It is used in all types of Sciences such as Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and Psychology. For psychologists it offers a standardized way to test a hypothesis, build on theories, and gain knowledge about the mind. There are several steps to The Scientific Method and each step serves its own purpose. By using the Scientific Method, you can understand better what psychologists go through to arrive at conclusions about human behavior.
The first step in the Scientific Method is to formulate a specific question that can be tested. Once you have identified the question, you can formulate a hypothesis. The hypothesis explains the association between
5. List and give a brief explanation of the steps of the scientific method. The
There are four main characteristics of the scientific method: observation/measurements, make an assumption, test the assumption, and revise the assumption. The first stage we make an observations. For instance, I notice that my peppers in my garden are not growing well. I am going to assume this is because I did not water that area well enough. So I am now going to test my assumption. This is done by watering the peppers in my garden more frequently. Lastly, I am going to see if my assumption was correct. If my peppers only needed more water, they will begin to grow more rapidly. It is also possible that my assumption was wrong, and that my peppers were getting enough water; however, there could be something wrong with the soil, temperature, etc. These are the four main characteristics of the scientific method; it is important to note that our assumptions sometimes be wrong, thus it is always important that we test our assumptions to make sure we are correct.
Scientific Method: The scientific method is a method or procedure that uses precise measurements, predictions, and data to answer questions.
The development of the scientific method in the late 1500’s to the early 1600’s was a crucial stepping-stone in the science community. The scientific method is based upon observations, hypotheses and experimentation. The concept is rather simple, and can be applied to many areas of study. Once an observation is made, the observer can make a hypothesis as to why that phenomenon occurs and can then design an experiment to prove whether or not that hypotheses is valid. Although the scientific method has been extremely useful in the discovery of various things from usages of medications to studying animal behavior, there are still those who question the usage of this tool. These critics claim that since
The scientific method is used during experiments to find a conclusion and or reason as to why an event or something happens.
To support the theory of continental drift is through topography, surveying the floors of oceans, charts of rock magnetism, and statistics on rock ages (Trefil & Hazen, 2010). At one time scientist believed that the deep ocean floors were flat; accumulating the sediment that progressively wore away from the prehistoric landmasses (Trefil & Hazen, 2010). However, they discovered steep-walled valleys and elevated highlands. This was evidences that just as the continents are transformed and are active, so to is the seafloor (Trefil & Hazen, 2010). The Mid- Atlantic Ridge, positioned in the central part of the Atlantic Ocean, is recorded to be the longest mountain range on this planet. Volcanoes, lava flow, and earthquakes are a source of
Though there are many good and bad aspects of the scientific method, there is an underlying fault with all of them. The scientific method in psychology relies on empiricism. Empiricism is a view that all knowledge is derived from experience. The scientific method can ultimately be split into two attitudes. The first is the dogmatic attitude. Dogmatism is the wish to impose regularities on the basis that repetition of regularly occurring events mean that a belief in
The lesson that is perhaps the most important one we learned this week is the scientific method. The scientific method is not only used in particularly every subsection in science, but allows psychologists to test different ideas about behavior. Pastorino and Doyle-Portillo in the General Psychology textbook describes the scientific method as “ a set of rules for gathering and analyzing information that enables you to test an idea or hypothesis”. (8) All scientists adhere to these standard set of rules in order to be able to better analyze the data and share the results throughout the scientific community. The scientific method consists of a few distinct parts: allow for observation, make a prediction, form a hypothesis, choose a research method/ design an
A) scientific process: The scientific process, also known as the scientific method is an organized way to help answer a question or to a hypothesis. The method includes six steps; make a conclusion, form a question, construct a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, analyze the data, and finally draw a conclusion, these steps can be modified once the process has been run through at least once for the same experiment.
SCIENTIFIC PROCESS- the scientific process is a way to make sure that your experiment can give a good answer to your question. We use observations, hypotheses, predictions, experimentation, and conclusions.
The scientific method is a tool that enables a person to seek out new knowledge, or correct and integrate new knowledge. It is composed of eight individual steps: which start out with defining a question, gathering information and resources, form an explanatory hypothesis, test the hypothesis by performing an experiment and collecting data in a reproducible manner, analyze the data, interpret the data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis, publish results, and ends with a retest. The steps can be grouped into four different essential elements: operation, observation, model, and utility function.
In the movie “Spare Parts” many things involving scientific method happened . . There are eight steps in scientific method . One and two are identifying problems and researching . Three and four are forming a hypothesis and planning experiments . There is also five and six which are performing the experiment and analyzing the data . Seven and eight are forming a conclusion and communicating results . In the next four paragraphs you will be learning what these are and what they do with scientific method .
The Scientific Method is the standardized procedure that scientists are supposed to follow when conducting experiments, in order to try to construct a reliable, consistent, and non-arbitrary representation of our surroundings. To follow the Scientific Method is to stick very tightly to a order of experimentation. First, the scientist must observe the phenomenon of interest. Next, the scientist must propose a hypothesis, or idea in which the experiments will be based around. Then, through repeated experimentation, the hypothesis can either be proven false or become a theory. If the hypothesis is proven to be false, the scientist must reformulate his or her ideas and come up with another hypothesis, and the experimentation begins again. This
The scientific method is research of assumptions, scientifically to see if they are true or false. It is important in human sexuality research because first, people might be afraid to be honest about answers if they think that they're being judged. Sex is a very interesting topic, but people often think they're being judged and it is hard to open up. There are two scientific goals of sexology: understanding and predicting behavior. (pp.30). The scientific method is important research because it is free from bias. The scientific method is more based on facts, rather than opinions.
One known research method is the Scientific Method which is a uniform way of creating observations, assembly data, establishing concepts, testing predictions, and understanding outcomes. These observations are made in order to observe and define behaviors. The first step to take in using a scientific method is to develop an issue or question. Next step is to perform a research and observation on the issue or question that was developed. Then a hypothesis needs to be formulated after these steps have been made.
