The Scientific Revolution: Copernicus and Galileo
The scientific revolution brought on new and important change. People began to see things extremely differently. Up to this point religion had been an issue of pure faith. A person could not use any empirically based data or reason to justify or develop ideas on religion. People who contradicted the church were considered heretics and were punished. At this time, people believed in the universe that Ptolemy had theorized: that the earth was the center and everything revolved around it. He was a strong Catholic Italian who was practicing physics, mathematics, and astronomy. Galileo started off for a religious career but soon became interested in mathematics. Galileo is known for many things other than supporting the Copernican Hypothesis. For one, he developed a better scientific method and he began basing evidence not only on theory but on empirical data. He began actually "performing" the experiments rather than merely theorizing. He was a good mathematician and scientist and made sure that his theories fit the evidence exactly. For several reasons, he believed that the Copernican theory was more credible than the Ptolemaic one. He was much stronger in his opinions than Copernicus and stated them to the public. He published his ideas in the widely read book, Dialogue on the Two Chief Systems of the World, in 1632. The church tried him of heresy because they believed this went against the church and the scriptures. The Church told him that he had to recant all of his ideas if he wanted to avoid punishment. In the beginning, he held true to his convictions and fought the point that he was not acting in a heretical manner because he was not going against scripture. Galileo said that the Bible had not stated anything regarding science and that the sole purpose of the scriptures was salvation. This theory, The Geocentric Universe of Ptolemy, was adjusted by most of the people during The Middle Ages. However, much later on, Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer, disagreed with Ptolemy’s theory. With his use of math and reason, he came up with a new theory called The Heliocentric Universe of Copernicus (Doc. C). He said that the universe & Earth itself revolves around the sun. If the Church was wrong about this part of the universe, this would then cause man to wonder what else they could be wrong about, or even lied to them about. Galileo is concerned with obtaining the truth about the world we live in, whether religion provides an answer or science. This is evident in the letter when he is discussing the “celestial bodies” concerning the work of Copernicus. Galileo believes that it would be wholly unjustified to ban Copernicus’ work after it has been confirmed over the years, he puts it: “in my judgement to be a contravention of the truth” if this were to occur. Basically Galileo believes if something is true, the basis of the truth either, religious or scientific is equally creditable. Sir Issac Newton developed the laws of gravity when an apple fell from a tree, Robert Boyle distinguished between elements and compounds, and Andreas Vesalius made the first accurate detailed study of human anatomy. The most revolutionary theory is seen in Document C. Greek astronomer Ptolemy said that the universe was geocentric, the earth is at the center of the universe. The scientific revolution established the new view of the universe. During this period people were finally beginning to define the scientific method and apply it to search for the truth. The scientific ideas of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries overturned many of the most fundamental ideas of the medieval worldview. New knowledge of the physical world provided occasions for challenging the authority of the church and of scripture. The new ideas then began to displace and reshape religious models of thought. Even though the scientific revolution exposed humankind to the truths of the world, the new science posed a potential challenge to religion.

During the Middle Ages period people believed in the idea of a Geocentric universe, the Earth was the absolute center of the universe, church had more power and authority than anybody else. People were influenced and thought that everything they do had to be approved by God. Nicolaus Copernicus challenged the theory that insisted that we lived in a Geocentric universe, and that is where our universe literally changed. The conflict all began with Copernicus’ heliocentric model being introduced to the world- going against the Church’s traditional teachings. They denounce his new perception of the world, but Galileo knew that new discoveries would have “consequences” and that people would turn against him.

The Church's greatest fear was that Galileo's personal knowledge would ultimately change the shared knowledge of the Church. In 1632, he published a book which presented both of the ideas of Copernicus and Ptolemy, and it was clear that Galileo supported the Copernican theory which stated that the Earth moved around the Sun.
