The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a fiction novella written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde illustrates an investigation of what it is like living in the nineteenth century where appearances, and maintaining your standing of those who are around you is important. Stevenson emphasizes that appearance mattered in the late nineteenth century, and this intertwine a quote, “In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of war blows in our ears then intimate the action of a tiger; stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; Now set the teeth, and stretch the nostrils wide, Hold hard the breath, and bend up every spirit to his full height! On, on, you noblest English” (Stevenson 157). This quote is taken from Appendix H, and when Darwin borrowed a Shakespeare quote, Darwin is trying to say is that the human has some striking similarity as an animal when it comes to rage. One example from The Carew Murder Case chapter is the maid described Mr. Hyde as he beat him to death, “And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway” (Stevenson 46) Appearances played a huge role in the novel, it was a mystery if Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are somehow related, but have 2 different characteristic traits.
