Human activities have been identified as the most significant cause of recent climate change; it is often referred to ‘Global Warming’. The main cause of global warming is emission of greenhouse gases .The main source of energy today - coal, gases and oil produce greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide. Nuclear energy can reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. It is used to generate electric power but unlike fossil fuels it does not emit greenhouse gases. Therefore, the best possible solution to limit the emission of greenhouse gases and to control change in climate .The major reasons to challenge the above thesis are reliability and efficiency of nuclear power, low greenhouse gas emissions and low cost electricity production from nuclear energy.
Firstly Nuclear energy is the only form of energy that can meet the requirements of being a reliable and an efficient source of energy that modern life and industry need. It is not subjected to changing weather conditions and energy can be produced 24/7 from nuclear power plants. It benefits both the consumers as well as the businesses. Unlike solar and wind energy it does not require sun or wind to produce electricity. During 2014 ‘Polar Vertex’ in United States nuclear plants still performed 95 and 98 percent of their best and enabled the locals to keep their lights and heat on and hence proving to be the most reliable energy source. However, there are arguments about the fact that no power station can generate electricity
In today’s day and age, nuclear power can be viewed as dangerous and unreliable, but it is the only source of baseload power of electricity. Baseload power is the amount of energy that is needed to meet year-round demands. Not only does nuclear power create a lot of energy to used, but it also does it reliably without emitting greenhouse gases, like fossil fuel factories. Because of this, nuclear energy has one of the lowest environmental impacts on land and natural resources of any electricity source (1). For example, by the year 2013, nuclear power plants have generated a total of 4,058,209,231 Megawatt-hours of energy, which is as much
The topic I selected was that of global warming. So far, I seem to want to change my thesis everyday; but this is how it stands for the moment. Americans need to work together as well as with other nations to take immediate action to reduce our environmental footprint in efforts to reverse or cease global warming. I feel this thesis clearly states my position, as well as the point of the paper. I still want to play around with the wording, especially at the end of it. I feel that global warming is a serious issue that should be addressed directly by not only the U.S. but by other nations as well. While there are several groups and movements dedicated to this cause not much has been done. This is why there continues to be groups, events and movements to try to bring attention to the issue. I feel the American government needs to step in to make everyone take the issue more seriously.
The issue of global warming is controversial and there are people claiming that global warming is only a fiction instead of a fact. However, research from scientists found that at the beginning of 2000, unprecedented warming was recorded and the Arctic ice has melted to the lowest levels in the recorded history. Moreover, the sea level has also risen by eight inches since 1870 (“The Scientific Truth about Climate Change”). Although natural forcing mechanisms alone cannot explain the formation of global warming, the increase of greenhouse gases can. Most climate scientists agree that one of the major causes of global warming is the human expansion of the greenhouse effect.
Most Americans would agree that global warming is a real threat to our planet, and that implementing alternative energy sources is a major step to combating the effects of it. Yet, only 4% of American homeowners have residential solar panels installed, and only 40% have even considered the option (6). It is a widespread myth that solar panels are only for the rich, and should be considered a luxury. While It turns out that solar panels have become increasingly affordable for the middle class over the past decade, with the White House announcing several policies to ensure so (2). And if solar panels are not the right choice for you due to living space or economic position, there are other alternative energy systems out there worth
As the issue of global warming becomes more popular, lots of eco-friendly vehicles have been introduced. Accordingly, the Government of Ontario also perceived the significance of it, and as such, they lunched a 3 year power assisted bicycle test project in 2006. (Hague) Now in 2016, we can see variety of power assisted vehicles such as pedelecs, e-scooters and self-balancing scooters which include Segways and Hover boards. While the reliance on these vehicles have been increasing, new types of vehicles have been released consecutively. However, there are no laws that deal with these kinds of vehicles in case of hit-and-run accidents.
Due in large part to its high energy output, nuclear power is a feasible and practical technology for meeting the world’s energy needs. For example, global energy demand has been continually increasing, with a 66% growth between 1980 and 2007; this demand is expected to increase by 40% by 2030 (World-Nuclear.org). As a testament to nuclear power’s utility as an energy source, it currently provides a large amount of global electricity: nuclear power met 20% of the global demand of electricity as of 2008 (Abu-Khader). This power generation is spread across 30 countries and is a result of 436 nuclear power plants (Adamantiades). The 20% figure also represents the United States’ dependence on nuclear power for generating
The issue of global warming should be on the list of our top priorities. Studies show that the average of global temperatures have risen since the Industrial Revolution began. Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes and many scientists have warned that a failure to bring greenhouse gases under control could eventually lead to a 62-fold increase in extreme heat blasts (Gillis Justin A17). Most of the increase is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities contribute to a build-up in carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. These gases act as a blanket that covers and gives us warmth, but once these gases such as carbon dioxide absorbs heat, but does not release it back into space in which causes the increase in global temperature. This is called the greenhouse effect because it only traps heat but does not release it.
Recently, the issue about climate change has been on and off the news headlines. The debate whether if global warming is real or hoax is gradually getting more attention to the public. Global warming is defined as phenomenon that causes global average temperature to rise in a steady rate. While many people speculate that global warming is a temporary issue that won’t be a serious issue after a while, scientific data point out that it could be a big threat to the world and humans are mostly responsible for it. For example since the beginning of the industrial revolution age, many big businesses have indiscriminately exploited the natural resources for their profit. The world needs to acknowledge that global warming
Global warming is a terrifying thing to think about. People try to ignore it because they are afraid of what it will cause. They don’t want to accept what scientists are saying, “Humans are to blame”. I, being a future scientist, also believe that humanity is the cause of global warming. This believe of mine stemmed from a class I took in middle school that put us, students, in the shoes of United Nations members. We had to take sides on issues such as deforestation and the usage of fossil fuels. I was liberated from my ignorance and I learned that we were “killing” our planet and potentially ourselves. Although there is plenty of scientific evidence that confirms that humans are the cause of global warming, some people refuse to accept it. In my mind there was no doubt that global warming was real and that humans were the cause, but I couldn’t wrap my head around the opposing view points of politicians, and governments. As a scientist I want the world to accept global warming and to set out on a path to prevent it. To do this I needed to understand all the viewpoints that people and governments have towards global warming.
Global warming is no longer just a prediction it is actually happening. It is undisputed that the average temperature at the surface of Earth has increased over the past century by 1 degree Fahrenheit, with both the air and the oceans warming. Since 1880, when people in many locations first began to keep temperature records, the 25 warmest years have all occurred within the last 28 years. The problem is that if we keep on hurting our own environment and ecosystems we are just going to destroy ourselves sooner or later. If we don’t start to change the way we are doing things around the United States with our factories, the way we dispose of things, or the way we get affected by the pollution, we will see some major issues in the future. This paper will examine the problem of Global Warming in the United States. The paper will first discuss how global warming works, and why it is damaging not only our lives but the lives of the animals around the United States and other major issues. It will also address the consequences for global warming for such a long time of a period. Next the paper discusses three environmental solutions to the problem of global warming: wildlife affects, glaciers and sea levels, the weather patterns. The paper will first explain each global warming solution. Then it will analyze the pros and cons, and potential strengths and weakness of each solution. Last this paper will offer some personal observations of the
“It’s a well-kept secret, but 95 per cent of the climate models we are told prove the link between human CO2 emissions and catastrophic global warming have been found, after nearly two decades of temperature stasis, to be in error,” writes Maurice Newman, chief business advisor to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott (Dunn). With this bold declaration, Australia thrust itself onto the international stage where it was widely criticized and condemned by the United Nations and environmental supporters worldwide. Already behind the world in climate change legislation, Australia quickly became the face of global warming denial.

Four decades from now, we do not want to repeat the story in the movie The Age of Stupid, in which a man lives in the devastated future world of 2055. The man looks back to today’s date and asks himself why we did not stop the climate change when we had the chance. However, today global warming is out of control, global temperatures are steadily rising. “The primary cause, a consensus of scientists has said, is the rising emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane” (Stone, 2013). The CO2 stays in the atmosphere for 50 to 100 years, nitrous oxide for 114 years while the methane stay in the atmosphere for at least 12 years. The impact of these greenhouse gases is of an immediate concern as it is increasing and is long lasting so we should not wait any longer to control the human activities that produce these greenhouse gases causing the climate change.
Global warming is no longer looked upon as a background problem or a side job. It is now one of the biggest political crises that the world faces and it will take global cooperation in order to be solved. One of the biggest problems surrounding climate change is a lack of a clear understanding of what is a safe global temperature cap. Climate science is still, like all science, a developing topic. Scientists cannot yet completely and confidently make sure statements. As of right now, politicians are failing to do enough to slow down the effects humans are having on climate change. The inability of scientists to provide a definite temperature cap and the poor attitudes of a minority of the United Nations’ (UN) politicians towards that cap are the reasons politicians are failing to successfully create legislation that will halt human impacts on rising global temperatures.
Introduction: The only place in our galaxy that we know is inhabitable is now being destroyed by man. As humanity has revolutionized we have created many problems along the way. The main problem we are facing right now is called global warming. We have damaged many ecosystems trying to better ourselves, and we have not yet once thought about the damage we are inflicting on our mother earth. We are already beginning to see the effects of global warming. It will make little changes that will have a huge impact, and devastate many ecosystems and everything living on earth.
