“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the question we hear so many times as children. Yet, growing up does not necessarily mean becoming an adult. Rather, growing up is the change within one’s self that is illustrated by a heightened awareness, the ability to think reasonably, and the proficiency to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. In adolescence, we turn to the adults in our lives to aid us in understanding our choices as we become increasingly responsible for our own actions. During this time in our lives, adults with worldly experience direct us down the path of good judgment in order that we may learn how to make good decisions. They near essential to us, even though not everyone has this advantage. William Shakespeare’s famous and celebrated tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, depicts several instances in which the title characters, though still naïve, behave more responsibly and maturely than the misguided adult figures in their lives–those of the Houses of Capulet and Montague, especially Juliet’s parents, and the culpable Friar Laurence. The earliest representation of the immature rashness of the Capulets and Montagues occurs at the beginning of the play. Two men of the House of Capulet consciously make the decision to goad a few men of the House of Montague into engaging in combat. Moments after the brawl begins, several Capulets and Montagues rush to join in the fighting without any hesitation or second thoughts. This entire fight scene shows the
Once upon a time, there were two different families that didn't like each other called the Capulets and the Montagues. A girl on the capulet side named Juliet and a boy named Romeo from the montague family met and they fell in love. Throughout the book of William Shakespeare, the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, there have been many occasions where Romeo and juliet have shown being in love. Some things that show Romeo and Juliet are in love, is they both are willing to die for eachother, they are in love at first sight, and they are very excited to get married right away. This is why Romeo and Juliet are in love.
Written in the 16th century, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is still the foundations of classic literature today. Although this text is almost four centuries old, what keeps us interested is Romeo and Juliet’s tragic story of youthfulness and impulsiveness. It follows the protagonists’ progression into mature adults; overcoming the obstacles of authority along the way. The idea of a passionate, youthful love is something many of us relate to, furthermore, the audience can comprehend the emotions that these characters feel because we recognise them as emotions of the youth. Three key scenes that highlight youthfulness and its consequences are Scene one of Act one, Scene two of Act two, Scene five of Act three. These three scenes represent
In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, we learn of the many hardships and highs Romeo and Juliet go through over the course of the story. The play Romeo and Juliet is based off two star-crossed lovers who are separated from each other due to a feud between their two families. Their love is so strong that at the end of the story Romeo and Juliet both end up committing suicide because they can’t live without each other. Whether it is problems with love, or them complimenting each other on how they feel about the other person, Shakespeare uses many literary devices to make the reader dig deeper into the context to find the meaning behind the sentence. Some of the literary devices are; similes, metaphors, and personification.
Tybalt hates the Montagues and always tries to find fault with them. Tybalt shows a considerable amount of impetuousness when he instigates a fight with Mercutio. Tybalt overlooks the outcome of the sword fight and becomes more confident even after slaying Mercutio. “Thou wretched boy, that didst consort him here, Shall him hence. (Act 3 Scene 1 Line 126-127) Tybalt underestimates Romeo and this is the tragedy that takes place for Tybalt’s rash actions. A second act of Tybalt’s impetuousness is when he desires to fight with Romeo during the Capulet party. “It fits such a villain is a guest: I’ll not endure him.” (Act 1 Scene 5 Line 74-75) Tybalt displays his rash actions and his hot headed mind when he sees Romeo at the party. Eventually, Capulet calms Tybalt and claimed that Romeo will do no harm. Tybalt is a compassionate person, but demonstrates impetuousness that affects the protagonists in a negative
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that involves young lovers, their “untimely death,” and a feud between their two families. The Capulets and the Montagues war against each other. The feud continues to escalate and provides the background for the story of these “two star-crossed lovers.” This literary masterpiece is still relevant today since it involves parental ambition, family fighting, and young love.
As a freshman at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, I took the writing class WTNG 102 Section 31, taught by Professor Ramey. All undergraduate students must receive at least a 70 as a final grade in the class prior to being enrolled in Critical Writing, WTNG 200 or 220. Entering college, I was most worried about taking Expository Writing because writing has never been one of my strengths. I have always struggled with writing transitions, and have made endless grammatical mistakes, including comma splices and tense changes. I hoped that Expository Writing would help me with these writing mistakes. Another thing that I hoped that WTNG 102 would do for my writing is that it would… Over the semester, I wrote a total of four papers with three different learning objectives and specific understandings. The first paper, “The Real Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” shows my understanding of rhetorical knowledge. The second paper, “What is a Discourse Community?” shows my understanding of discourse community knowledge. The third paper, “Genre Analysis” shows my understanding of genre knowledge. Through these three papers, I have achieved the learning outcomes in rhetorical knowledge, discourse community knowledge, and genre knowledge.
What if The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, wasn't a tragedy. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare's classic plays and a timeless piece. As popular as it is for it's ending, we can't help but wonder if suicide was the answer to stop the family feud. I believe that this play wouldn't have been a tragedy if it wasn't for two lords, Tybalt, and Friar Luarence.
Fighting, in it’s own nature, is often impulsive and not thought through. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare made sure that every action committed, had an appropriate if not more brutal consequence. These consequences are clearly shown. In the beginning, two Capulet servants, Sampson and Gregory, provoke a fight with two Montague servants. Sampson bites his thumb at them which he knows is a “disgrace to them”, and this provokes a fight. After this fight the Prince declares that if they don’t stop fighting their “lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace”. Halfway through, Tybalt, a character shown to be violent and impulsive, announces a duel with Romeo. Initially, Romeo doesn’t want to fight, but Mercutio is accidentally killed by Tybalt, and Romeo, without thinking, throws himself into the fight. In a rage Romeo goes after Tybalt stating that “Either thou, or I, or both must go with him” (III.i.126). Tybalt’s death sparks Romeo’s banishment from Verona. Finally, at the end of the play, Romeo on a suicide mission heads to Juliet’s tomb, where he stumbles across and kills an equally depressed Paris. Romeo, despondent and angry, gives Paris little forewarning to “tempt not a desperate man” (V.iii.59) before he kills him. From street fights to unprovoked murders, the characters are slaves to their emotions and human instincts, but not everyone can as
King Solomon of Israel once said, "A prudent man sees evil and hides himself, the naive proceed and pay the penalty" ("10 Biblical Principles For Making Wise Decisions"). As Solomon suggests, people who practice sensibleness do not expose themselves to negative situations by using reason and caution. However, when children show naiveness, they irrationally follow whomever they trust, resulting in impetuous choices and retribution. In Shakespeare 's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets ' selfishness and rage, Nurse 's passiveness and moral abandonment, and Friar Lawrence 's hastiness and insensitivity causes Romeo and Juliet 's alienation and desperation, showing the link between a lack of sensible guidance and rash decisions.
The tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet are not the fault of just one person; it is the fault of many. In fact, the blame could be placed on each character – if anyone acted in a different way, there could have been a different ending. Some had a greater impact on their deaths than others however, namely the families and the feud, the Friar Lawrence, Mercutio, Balthasar and Romeo & Juliet themselves. Some may argue for other characters, but the actions of these five ultimately had a more prominent effect on their suicide. One of the factors most to blame is the families’ feud and the restrictions it placed upon the young lovers.
In “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, what may seem to be the tragic destiny of two star-crossed lovers, is actually the result of impulsiveness and the disregard for any consequences that can occur. “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, repeatedly, expresses the ideas of fate controlling one's destiny, however, fate is not responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. In the city of Verona, Romeo and Juliet stand as heirs to feuding households, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other, despite what their families might do if they were to find out. This ongoing recklessness throughout the story places both of them in jeopardy, and it, eventually, leads to their own demise.
What is fate? William Shakespeare teaches us about love and proves the existence of fate in his play Romeo and Juliet when the paths of two young people from two different worlds are inevitably crossed. Both families are driven by hatred, but their children’s fates are intertwined from birth creating their forbidden love which is destined for destruction. From the chance meeting between a Capulet and a Montague in Italy during the Renaissance to Romeo’s future in which his dreams happen, fate also encourages Romeo’s exile and an urgent message to not be delivered. The play’s famed prologue indicates their romance are doomed right from the beginning.
“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou?” (2.2. 36), could be one of the most well known quotes from Shakespeare’s tragic and romantic play Romeo and Juliet. In this quote, Juliet is asking why Romeo has to be a Montague; she cannot marry him because he is a family enemy. In the end of the story, the two lovers are finally joined together by taking their own lives. Although it was their choice to die, there were many people who influenced them into taking such a path. The strategy of Friar Lawrence, the poor advice of the nurse to Juliet and the Capulet’s plan for Juliet to marry Paris led to Romeo and Juliet’s death.
The theme of the story is love and some fate. Romeo and juliet is a love story that went terribly wrong. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet in life death can be caused by oneself or people around them. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The horrible tragedy was caused by their families and themselves. Romeo lovesick for rosaline is comforted by his friend Benvolio.Capulet tells Paris that he may not marry his daughter Juliet until she’s older. Romeo and his friends learn of a party being held by the capulets and decide to go as masquers. At the party, Tybalt sees Romeo, but is prevented from fighting him by capulet. Romeo meets Juliet and instantly falls in love. After leaving the party Romeo eludes his friends returns to meet juliet and
Tragedy is an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress. The shocking love story of Romeo and Juliet ended with two teens’ hasty decisions to commit suicide. William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, focused on the love story of two teenagers, Romeo and Juliet. For they thought death was the only option, death they chose, but they thought wrong. Like many others in life, if only Romeo and Juliet had pondered a little longer, waited till their feelings of desperation dispersed, the tale of Romeo and Juliet could have ended with a different story.
