Everything in life has its flaws but it’s when and where those flaws are that counts. The United States educational system is no exception to this and it shows the most through both test scores and statistics. This problem is easily noticeable when you take into account of how well the other countries around the world have been doing in comparison of the United States. Like most things however you can fix a problem by going to the source of it and many sources are saying the that the sources of this problem is at home. They believe that this is the source due to how much it affects kids both mentally and psychologically. Other problems like teenage dropouts and pregnancy are also major problems affecting school. Teens that dropout say that …show more content…
The United States is seen as being the number 1 world power for multiple reasons; sports, military, but certainly not education. As a matter of fact a recent study by the United Nation confirms this saying that Germany and the United States near the bottom for education for almost all subjects while countries like South Korea and Japan seem to excel at everything.("Poor Marks For U.S. Education System, UN: S. Korea, Japan Top Best Schooling List; U.S. Near Bottom - CBS News." CBS News - Breaking News Headlines: Business, Entertainment & World News. Web. 11 Feb. 2016. Notes 1)("Poor Marks For U.S. Education System, UN: S. Korea, Japan Top Best Schooling List; U.S. Near Bottom - CBS News." CBS News - Breaking News Headlines: Business, Entertainment & World News. Web. 11 Feb. 2016. Notes 2) They have also stated that it’s not the fact they have a weak educational system but rather it’s because their scores aren’t as good as the other UN countries. Now many experts that also got this information have also said that this problem may have started not at school but rather at home. Experts believe that students perform bad due to events that may happen to them at home, a good example of this would be maybe a divorce could have happened and now the parents are living separately. How would
I have found the article titled “Lessons from the Smartest Kids in the World” from usnews.com, which has a brief summary and information from Amanda Ripley’s book titled “The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way”. While I was not able to find the exact book itself, in my research I have found several sources and interviews with the author that I will use to make my argument. I feel very strongly about many of the arguments presented in this book, and the facts are very clear that the American schooling system is severely behind other countries standards. In order to improve our school system as a country, there needs to be much more support from the parents, more expectations from teachers, and we even need the government
There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. Conversely, a few of the prominent reasons why the education system is failing are overcrowded schools, the rise of technology, and following the same old school hours.
Education plays important role in society. It determines the final development of an adult’s personality. In today’s society most jobs require a University degree. To receive a University degree students need to rely on a good education system. Does America provide this? The American education system has relied on the grade point average system for a long time. The problem with this is there is not a universal GPA grade point system varying from course to course. This creates an inaccurate way to determine ones overall achievements. Teachers have different standards than others, grade inflation can occur and students can be exposed to different learning environments. Does the education system need to change to create fairness?
Education is a necessity across the globe, from America to Africa to China. Some education systems, however, are more successful than others and hold differing views and approaches to education. Culture greatly impacts education, which in turn impacts further opportunity. As unfair as it may be, a child’s cultural background largely determines their level of success. The American education system is lacking when compared to various other world cultures, and this is causing the socioeconomic gap to grow. Because of this inadequate education, more and more families are dipping beneath the poverty line. This could be due to poor discipline as well as the diversity of students. The diversity of the students results in a wide array of needs that are not being met by the public education system. This issue could be minimized by working to create a more inclusive academic environment to ensure equality and success.
In a progressively more globalized world that necessitates more effective educational practices, the U.S., once the biggest global force in education, has seen its dominance slowly slip out, and its educational status fall even lower than that of several third-world countries. The decline experienced in American school system academic achievement is not as a result of lack of funding, but as a consequence of the overall educational system watering down. According to Gatto, educating children through the existing public school system of America is crippling rather than helping them. From his essay, ‘Against School,’ it is established that the goal of the whole public school system is to limit people’s intelligence in an attempt to create a society that is manageable. Gatto continues to state that action is needed to change this situation. He supports his assertions using current and historical information about the American school system and his personal experience. After reading his article, one realizes that most of Gatto’s arguments are true. It is true that the American education system is making the students comfort to the government and society norms, which is why they are easily bored. This essay’s goal will, therefore, be to support John Gatto’s beliefs.
Our school system is one of the most praised things in the United States of America. At a very young age we put our children in school to educate them and make them intelligent. We see these children as our future doctors, lawyers, and business men. The United States of America gives quality education with experienced teachers whose goals are to make the children our future leaders. We don’t only educate these children with book smarts, but we
The American education system is set up to create a clear division between the social classes. The quality of the education that children receive depends on whether they attend an elite school or urban schools. Elite schools are located in upper class neighborhoods. Students who attend elite schools receive high quality education. Demographically, the majority of students who attend elite schools are Caucasian. This does not necessarily have much to do with the skill level of the students who apply to the school. More often than not, the application process for these schools is discriminatory. Urban schools on the other hand, are inner city schools known for their diverse population of students who come from middle and lower class
The outlook of the United States’ future is in jeopardy. The reality is that the United States is falling behind the world and will continue do so due to its education system. The standards of U.S. education have stagnated while globally, the competition has become fiercer and more bent upon producing the best students. The U.S. government pays for $10,995 for a student. South Korea spends $6,723 and consistently gets higher scores than the U.S in math, reading and science. These are unacceptable results. In business, one should try to maximize profits while minimizing costs. The U.S. education system not
One would think that as a World Superpower the United States education system would be producing exceptionally high caliber young men and women to become contributing members of society upon graduation. However, in many ways, the opposite is shown to be the case, with declining test scores, with a 19% dropout rate among high school students, with a 41% drop out rate of college students, and 40% of the graduates unprepared to either continue their educations at universities or become worthwhile members of the workforce. These declines can be attributed to many factors including lack of parental involvement, teen pregnancy, rising tension in world affairs, drug use, and many others, however, our government 's involvement in the school system is another major factor and is the current focus of this paper. In it I intend to show how many of the government 's policies with regards to education are proving to be a major hindrance in the preparedness of our youth once they 've completed their requisite milestones for graduation. (U.S.A Department of Education, 2012)
American education system does not compare to other counties. Students are not expected to meet high standards. American students do not possess the communication and computational skills they need today to succeed in college or in the working world. The American school system has no answer to fixing what a continuous problem we face in this country. Schools are overcrowded, lacks the tools and funding to educate our children. Meanwhile in other counties like China, Korea, and other parts of the world thrive on sending our productive individual into this world. I think if you want your child to have a better education either home school them to insure they are receiving the proper education or send them to a foreign country where sure to get an education, because the American school system does not compare to other counties.
Education, next to politics, is one of the most debated topics in America. More people than ever are attending college because there is a stigma that one has to get a Bachelor’s degree in order to get a good job. People over the last few decades have begun to realize that in order for one to be successful in life they must achieve a higher education, but at the same time people are pondering the question of whether or not America’s educational system is up to par. In a recent study the United States was labeled “average” by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (U.S. Falls In World Education Ranking). It is an international ranking system that rates 35 countries educational system, and the United States was not
The United States is considered by many to be a world leader who excels in every arena. In education, however, the U.S. has fallen behind other countries in Europe and Asia, such as China, Korea, and Finland. These countries outperform the United States when it comes to education. In order for the United States to continue to compete in the world economy it has to improve its system of education to compete in changing times. The United States education system is inferior to many foreign countries education system based on how U.S. students score on tests compared to students in foreign countries.
The United States education system is currently ranked 17th worldwide (“Global Grade”). According to the dictionary, education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. In a survey conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, adults in the United States scored way below average, and better than only two of the twelve countries it was being compared to (“Why Other Countries Teach Better”). Does the United States really want to be average or below with a skimpy ranking in a subject of such importance? The United States is the superpower leading the world in many ways such as in military or political power, but European and Asian countries are succeeding us in the academic world. Education is the basis of most things in life and one of the most powerful tools a person can obtain, so the United States lacking in it will eventually be detrimental and allow other countries like China to pull ahead in the race to be the best. Americans are competing with more qualified and better educated people from around the world for jobs and success, but it is not their fault they were not properly prepared. Although the United States education system does have its perks, there are many problems that need to be resolved immediately, like the manner in which schools are conducted and the distribution of funding.
30 years ago, America was the leader in quantity and quality of high school diplomas. Today, our nation is ranked 36th in the world. In the US in 2010, 74% of students in American high schools graduated and received their high school diplomas. If the other 16% or 1.3 million students had graduated that year, the nation would have seen $337 billion more in earnings throughout those students’ lifetimes. The problem is not only those 16%, but also the education of much of the graduating 74%. The problem is High schools are not preparing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel after graduation. Some of the failures that accompany US education are the fact that: only 1 in 4 high school students graduate college-ready in the 4 core subjects of English, Reading, Math and Science. Since 1983, over 10 million Americans have reached the 12th grade without having learned to read at a basic level. Over 20 million have reached their senior year unable to do basic math. Almost 25 million have reached 12th grade not knowing the essentials of U.S. history. American 12th graders also rank 19th out of 21 industrialized countries in mathematics achievement and 16th out of 21 nations in science. Our advanced physics students rank dead last. The low ability that is represented by American high school students is many times because of the quality of the teachers who are educating these students. In the U.S., 14% of new
Have you ever wondered why our country is ranked low in comparison to other countries when it comes to education? Our country is said to be the best country in the world; yet when one takes a closer look on our system, defects are bound to be found. Take a look at our education for instance. We have the least productive schools in the nation. The truth is that the board of education has dumbed down the system due to a decrease in testing averages.
