The checks and balances system provides equal rights and power to various different levels of governments. With that, this ultimately “balances” out all the rights and justices for each of the branches to prevent any dictatorship. The Federal Government consists of three branches; the Executive (President), the Legislative (Congress), and the Judicial (Supreme Court) branch. The Executive has the power to assign new judges that are later checked by the Senate (Congress). The Executive can veto any laws the Legislative creates. However, if 2/3 of the majority disagrees with the President’s denial, the Legislative branch is capable of overriding it. The Refugee crisis across Europe and beyond is among the most complex topics in the world right now. Most of the refugees are coming from Syria, but why? Why can’t they just stay at home? Within the last 5 years there has been a mass exodus of civilians in Syria; other countries have experienced very similar scenarios with civilians leaving. With so many are leaving, it is quite difficult for refugees to find safe places to stay. About 6 years ago Syria was among the most stable countries in the Middle East (though ruled by what can be described as a dictator). The reason behind Syrians fleeing their home country is to get away from the absolute violence, Syrian civil war has caused, the collapsing infrastructure of the country, and to keep children safe.The outbreak of a civil war in March 2011 caused 9 million Syrians to leave since then (“Syrian Refugees: A Snapshot of the Crisis – in the Middle East and Europe” 1). The Syrian Civil War has left more than two-hundred forty thousand people dead, including twelve thousand children.

The United States government was formed to create a democracy fit for the idea that they would be considered “land of the free.” Unfortunately, throughout the history of several world wide events, the intentions of the “forefathers” have strayed to manipulate events and people. The government has been accused for many past years of lying when main events strike the nation causing many tragedies as well as causing emotional anguish on the world. Many claims of false accusations are typically only made public after several years of sealed documents and evidence are put away, which indeed could be a conspiracy of its own. Conspiracies have been made throughout the course of many years for just about any event that occurs around the world. Conspiracies can vary anywhere from ludicrous to factual, there has been specific verifiable evidence to suggest that the events, 9/11, JFK assassination, and Gulf of Tonkin, as told, are not completely accurate.

Are we as American citizens receiving what we expect from our government or are we demanding too much from it. It seems that over the last several years we have demanded that our government has to find ways of doing more with less. As a result of the ever-increasing demands our government is forced to face, according to Professor Paul C. Light, the American government is ill executed and the federal service is less energetic than ever before (Paul, 2008). Thus, it seems that we as Americans are not getting what we expect from our government. It is overworked; load with bureaucratic problems, forcing federal service workers to more with less. Today, many Americans are firm believers that the federal government is constantly overreaching and causing citizens to feel harassed and mislead. The idea that the federal government has become overly powerful is exceedingly common throughout the United States. In many cases, the federal government does overstep by inappropriately using the power that they possess. However, there is a fine line between rebelling against the federal government for your own freedom and completely overlooking all of the same laws and rights that the rest of the American citizens are expected to abide by. The Cliven Bundy standoff is a 20-year legal dispute between the United States Bureau of Land Management and Cliven Bundy, who was illegally grazing his cattle on federally owned land in the southeastern Nevada area. Cliven Bundy’s disobedience was uncivil, and could have been handled in a much better way.

How many people are involved in a government decision to help a large bank? On the surface, it is a simple answer. Some might think just the banks and the government because that is who made the decision, and the banks are the ones that were helped by that decision. The United States government is comprised of leaders elected by the citizens. The United States government also relies on the taxes generated by these same citizens which help fund government programs, the military and many other things. The United States government may not always be seen as a flawless group; however, it is generally more favorable than having corporations ruling over America. In Pills and Starships, Nat and her family do not have a stable government to rely on, and they are instead at the whims of the corps’ intense regulations, pharmacontrol, and sponsored massacres. The corps uses manipulation often in order to achieve their goal of rejuvenating the Earth so they can remain. In Pills and Starships, Lydia Millet demonstrates how a corporate controlled body has enough influence within the collapsing society to dictate how Nat and her family act as citizens.

The United States government has sets up a system where each of the states can set up their own laws. Since each state has that ability, anyone traveling from state to state can find this very difficult since the laws change from state to state. Kansas has set up several laws that seem ridiculous but there are some that actually have some logical reasoning behind them. It would be difficult for any police officer to enforce every single law from the state and the country. No one can remember every single law; after all, no one is perfect. Often local residents find they are irritated and frustrated, mostly at law enforcement, but also at people when they see people breaking the law and getting away with it. They ask themselves questions like; where are the police officers when the law is being broken, or where are the police when you need them. They fail to realize that the police cannot be everywhere at every second of the day.

The consequences of the conflict on outside nations has been tremendous. The Syrian Civil War has led to arguably the worst humanitarian crisis since World War 2, and although the plight of refugees through Europe is highly publicised, the number of refugees in Europe only accounts for 10% of the total number displaced across the world. The majority of Syrian refugees currently reside in neighbouring such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The economic and social strain on these countries is immense, and the issue of aid and refugee resettlement has become a polarising issue in all countries which have offered/are discussing whether to take in refugees and resettle them. In fact, In Turkey alone, there are around 2,700,000 registered refugees in various camps and throughout the country. Turkey has also given $8,000,000,000 in aid to the cause. The situation is particularly bad in Jordan where almost 650,00 registered refugees reside. The United States is one of the few countries that govern through the federal system. Federalism was created to organize a form of government where multiple levels of government have authority. It was meant to decentralize and divide powers and responsibilities to prevent a tyranny from ever taking over. The Syrian Refugee Crisis is one of the worst humanitarian movement since WWII. Since 2011, over 11 million people have been forced to leave their homes due to the civil war that erupted over changes in the government (Fantz). As more refugees leave the country in search of safety, acceptance, and opportunity, pressure is put on the world powers to accept Syrian Refugees into their countries. Europe has received an onslaught of refugees, and now all eyes fall on America. Pressure is building on the U.S. to accept Syrian Refugees, however, with the rise of ISIS, many Americans have become more hesitant to let them in.

The Syrian refugee crisis has received massive media coverage. People around the world are trying to comprehend the desperate, complicated situation surrounding Syria. The civil war in Syria is the worst crisis in our time. Syrians upset at the fact that long promised reforms have not been enacted, began anti-government demonstrations which started the civil war in 2011. The peaceful protests turned ugly, with the government violently putting an end to those protests. Afterward, ordinary citizens took arms, causing the situation to escalate. Syrians are fleeing their homes because of the great violence, which have left thousands dead and millions wounded, a collapsed infrastructure, resulting in a shattered economy, and for the safety of the children. Syrians are either streaming to surrounding countries or risking their lives to travel to Europe.

Since 2011, Syria has been engaged in a Civil War with protestors against the government and members of the extremist group ISIS, and approximately 7.6 million people have been displaced from their homes (usnews.com 2015). As the conflict destroys more homes and livelihoods each year, an increasing number of civilians have been forced to leave Syria and try to find safety elsewhere. Already a contentious issue, the Syrian refugee crisis has awakened tensions, both economic and social as debate erupts over what to do with the refugees.In response to the crisis, while some countries like Germany have pledged to help the refugees, (New Statesman 2015 1) only 2,340 have been admitted. Clearly, more needs to be done in order to help the refugees. Although there are economic and population concerns to be considered, the humanitarian conflict that faces the refugees and solutions already available are reason enough for Europe to increase the numbers of Syrian refugees allowed in.
