The battle of the wilderness was the bloodiest battle in the civil war. Over tens thousand people died, four hundred people burned, And two hundred people suffercated. The opening battle of Grant’s, sustained offensive against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia known as the Overland Campaign, was fought at the Wilderness, May 5th thru 7th in1864. On the morning of May 5th, 1864, the Union V Corps attacked Ewell’s Corps on the Orange Turnpike, while A.P. Hill’s corps during the afternoon encountered Getty’s Division (VI Corps) and Hancock’s II Corps on the Plank Road. Fighting was fierce but inconclusive as both sides attempted to maneuver in the dense woods. Darkness halted the fighting, and both sides rushed forward with reinforcements.
The three day battle was action packed from start to finish. It all started at about 5:30 am, with a single shot fired over Marsh Creek. After a single shot, all hell broke loose. The Union suffered important losses, most notably the loss of General Reynolds. General Lee arrived on the battlefield near noon, after receiving word of the battle. A single Confederate division drove back two Union brigades, who retreated to Cemetery Hill. General Lee decided to attack the Union soldiers at Cemetery Hill to prohibit reinforcements. General Ewell declined the option to attack, and the first day of battle came to an end. Meanwhile, the Union gathered reinforcements as General Lee feared.
September 16, 1862 Gen. George B. McClellan an his army (Union) confronted Robert E. Lee troop ( Confederate) in Virginia. On September 17, Gen. Hooker attack Lee left flank. It was the bloodiest day in American military history. The Union kept attacking and the Confederate counterattacks were just as powerful. This battle had Lee forces go to Maryland which would give Lincoln win that needed before giving the Emancipation Proclamation
After Shiloh the South would never smile again. Known originally as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle fought in North America up to that time. Pittsburg Landing was an area from where the Yankees planned to attack the Confederates who had moved from Fort Donelson to Corinth, Mississippi. The North was commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant and the South by General Albert Sydney Johnston.
In 2009 a planned re-enactment of the Battle on the Plains of Abraham was set to take place on the original battlefield in light of its 250th anniversary. However the historical re-enactment of the 1759 battle was cancelled by The National Battlefields Commission for security concerns that could, as CBC News wrote, “turn into a modern-day conflict.” There is speculation other factors influenced the withdrawal of the re-enactment such as the overwhelming negative responses from the francophones in Quebec. These negative reactions were supported by the devastation resulting from the loss of the battle in 1759 and the modern-day neglect of Quebec and French culture. I commend the decision to cancel the re-enactment of the Battle because of
The Battle of the Wilderness was fought May 5-7 1864 in the course of the Civil War. The battle was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War that had a great impact on the Virginia campaign and further development of the Civil War. At the same time, the battle ended in disengagement, which did not bring any clear results for either party, Grant’s army from the Union Part and Lee’s army from the Confederate part. Instead, fighting had to carry on but the battle influenced the balance of power in the region and marked the beginning of Southerners’ retreat and advancement of the Union army. Now let's talk about what influence the battle of the wilderness have on the Civil War. The Battle of the Wilderness
The Battle of Antietam was the only battle in the Civil War fought in the North, and was the single bloodiest
Grant wasted very little time trying to hopefully finish the war. Soon enough the Battle of Wilderness began on May, 5 1864. For a couple days the Union and Confederate forces struggled.
The battle of Antietam began on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg Maryland when General McClellan’s Union army began a powerful attack on general Lee’s left flank. Not only did this advance bring about the beginning of the battle of Antietam it also marked the begging of the bloodiest day in our nation’s history. This bloody clash took place on Millers corn field and in west woods near Dunkers church. The two forces fought for control of the sunken road; a key defensive position that was held by the confederates, this position was breached by the Union forces at one point but control was quickly regained by the confederacy because there were no further advances by the Union army to maintain this breach in Lee’s defense.
The Battle Of Bull Run was fought on July 21st 1861 in Prince William County Virginia. It was the first main battle in the Civil War. Each side had around 18,000 men who were poorly trained. This Battle ended in a confederate victory.
On the night and morning of June 15 and 16, 1775, Colonial Militiamen placed themselves on nearby Breed’s Hill (on a peninsula), in hopes of ambushing the British troops who would be moving their troops. The Patriots stood their ground for the first two attacks, but then they ran out of ammunition on the third attack of the British who had just received reinforcements. Even though the British chased the Patriots off the peninsula, the Continental Army is considered to have won because of their 441 troops killed of 1,500 compared to the British loss of 1,054 out of
Fought in 1863 from July 1 to July 3, the Battle of Gettysburg is widely considered to be one of the most important battles of the civil war. It began as a skirmish but in the end involved about 160,000 Americans. General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army had crossed the Potomac River into Pennsylvania before the battle, threatening major cities in the north such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington. To counteract the threat, the union's new general George G. Meade marched to intercept Lee. Meade's infantry was spotted by a confederate spy and Lee moved his army west.
General Jackson’s II Corps attacked during the afternoon of May 2nd. Opposing them was a Union force that had gathered for supper and was wholly unprepared to defend itself. Union forces rapidly withered and routed under the Confederate onslaught, retreating within hundreds of meters of General Hooker’s headquarters. Within several hours of the initial attack, nightfall forced a halt to the Confederate offensive and offered a reprieve for Union forces. Determined to prevent the Union Army from regrouping and consolidating its lines during the night, General Jackson conducted a reconnaissance of Union lines with key members of his staff, in preparation for a night attack. While returning from the evening reconnaissance, Confederate soldiers from North Carolina misidentified Jackson and his staff and fired upon them, wounding Jackson and several other staff officers. Upon learning of Jackson’s condition, General Stuart immediately assumed command of II Corps.
At midnight on May 3-4, 1864, the Union army of the Potomac and the Independent Ninth Corps, about 120,000 men, left their winter camps in Culpeper County and marched south toward the Rapidan River fords. At early dawn, Union cavalry swam across Germanna Ford, scattered Confederate cavalry pickets there and allowing Union engineers to build two pontoon bridges. General Gouverneur Warren’s Fifth Corps marched across the ford at 6 a.m., entering a dense woodland known as the Wilderness. Meade planned to push through the Wilderness, wheel his army to the right, and attack Lee’s army, which he thought would take up a defensive position behind Mine Run several miles to the west. Confident that Federal cavalry was between him and Confederate army,
The bloodiest battle fought was the Battle of Gettysburg. 3,155 Union troops died and 3,903 for the Confederates. 14,259 men were wounded for the North with 5,425 for the South.10, 790 men were missing in total. One fight that caused a major part in the casualties was Pickett’s Charge.
The Wilderness Campaign was a battle between the Union and Confederacy that lasted 3 days from May 5-7 1864 that ultimately had an inconclusive result. Each side had a general as mostly all armies do. The Union was lead by Lt. Gen Ulysses S. Grant, and the Confederacy was lead by General Robert E. Lee. The battle was located at Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Virginia. The Union had a total of 102,000 troops and the Confederacy had 61,000. The Confederacy had less troops, but they had less casualties with the Union having 18,400 casualties and the Confederacy having 11,400 casualties. It was fought at the edge of a field and woods. The battle had a very high amount of casualties due to the close quarter fighting in the woods. It was nearly
