There are many things that happened before our time that are just as important today as century ago. In order to understand what a big impact our history can have on us today we have to step back in time. It 's important to know the stories of those before us. I find it fascinating because it tells me so much of what it was like during that time. We need to hear these stories, preserve them, and pass them down to those that come after us.
After visiting The Knights of Columbus I learn something interesting. The world 's largest Catholic fraternal service organization was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven in 1882; it was named in honor of Christopher Columbus.
Little did I know my visit to the KC would bring

He failed to gain support for his project in Portugal so he decided to move to Spain. This is where circumstances were more favorable and it worked out because the Catholic monarchs Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon approved the project.
However Isabella of Castile seems to be the influential power behind her husband negotiations just like Eva Peron was the influential power behind her husband making decisions. Both these Isabella and Eva political influence was credited to their husbands. Although both of these women had great knowledge and experience in broken financial systems their activities, desires and influence expanded into rapid wealth.
After getting the support and financing, Christopher Columbus 's expedition led to the opening of the New World. Spain was the first global power which dominated Europe and much of the world for more than a century. What stood out about his long drawn out journey was how he accomplished this by commanding three small ships, which landed on the coast of a Caribbean island and as a result this began the Spanish conquest of America.
The 1492 voyage granted Christopher Columbus recognition with the European, which secured him the title of Admiral of the Ocean Sea. More importantly, it also helped him to obtain further royal patronage and as a result he lead three more expeditions to the Caribbean.

Christopher Columbus achieved remarkable success in the New World by discovering new lands and presenting an opportunity for new development. Over the course of four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, Columbus ignited the conquest and colonization of land in the New World. He recorded his experiences in journals and letters for future navigators and sailors to read and learn from. The benefits that arose from his expeditions were known as the Columbian Exchange, which included the transfer of people, resources, and culture, all of which significantly impacted society worldwide. His world changing legacy impacted the development of the territory in the New World and increased trade, resources, and economic stability for Europe.
Before the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Moors were in control of much of the Iberian Peninsula. They desperately wanted to unite Spain and turn it into a
Christopher Columbus is an internationally celebrated explorer, due to his voyages to Central America during the Age of Discovery, a period between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when explorers were sponsored by eastern countries to claim land. Columbus was an Italian explorer, on a conquest for gold and riches, who was sponsored by the monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, to travel to Southern Asia. Columbus proposed the idea of traveling from East to West, rather than traveling along the borders of countries and continents, such as Africa and Asia, to eastern countries for gold, spices, and other riches for the monarchs. When Columbus succeeded in landing in the New World, he believed he landed in Southern Asia, but rather he landed in Hispaniola, modern day Haiti and Dominican Republic. The “New World” was a term used for the area Columbus landed in, on October 12, 1492. When Columbus landed in the New World, it was inhabited by native people, who were used by the Spaniards to help navigate and understand the landscape of the islands and as workers to find gold. Columbus has a mixed legacy because he had positive and negative attributes; he made the Columbian Exchange, which increased biodiversity in the New World, and is an important explorer in American history, but also began the African slave trade and caused population devastation due to slavery and diseases in the native populations. The legacy of Christopher Columbus should be remembered as a villain because he was greedy for wealth and power, he introduced diseases to the New World, and enslaved and used violence against the natives.
“The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is an apostolic Catholic community of women religious that exists to carry out the Gospel of Jesus Christ through service and prayer in the world” (qtd. in “About the Sisters of Charity”). The Sisters are led by their mission statement to be “[u]rged by the love of Christ and in the spirit of [their] founder, Elizabeth Ann Seton, [the] Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati strive to live Gospel values. [They] choose to act justly, to build loving relationships, to share [their] resources with those in need, and to care for all creation” (qtd. in “Mission Statement”). Through this mission, they dedicate themselves to “the education of children, care of orphans, the poor and the sick” (qtd. in “Sisters of Charity Cincinnati”). These values are exemplified in numerous ways but specifically have been shown with the creation of educational institutions, orphanages, and their selflessness during the civil war.
Without Christopher Columbus the people of the world wouldn’t be able to enjoy a lot of the things they can today. Christopher Columbus was a famous navigator and explorer who discovered an island back in October 12, 1492 and is called the Americas. Many people disagree that Columbus had an impact on the New World, but some people do. Columbus had a big impact when he discovered the New World. Columbus broke the isolation between the Americas and Europe. He introduced new ideas and goods such as textiles. If he didn’t do these things who knows how the world would be today.
Columbus, the first Spanish explorer to reach America, initially thought that the he had landed in the East Indies, which had been his ultimate goal. “His sea wanderings would have been written off as an expensive failure, once it was realized that he had not found the illusive water route to India, had it not been for the discovery of gold on Hispaniola in 1493”(Nash, 18). Once it became known that there were gold and other precious metals on this continent, people from Spain began to journey to America in hopes of gaining immense wealth. The Spanish claimed Panama, Mexico, parts of South America, and southern areas of what is now North America and these expeditions were typically led by military figures. The Spanish viewed America as land to be conquered and they viewed Native Americans
The first of these nations to arrive in the new world was Spain, led by Christopher Columbus. In 1492, Christopher Columbus led the first voyage to the west in search for and alternate route to India, and China. The voyage failed in finding an alternate
Four empires embarked in the journey of exploring and conquering the New World: the Spanish, French, Dutch, and English. Among these empires, the new world was first and most vastly conquered by the Spanish. In 1492, the italian explorer Christopher Columbus sailed to America for the first time under the orders of the Spanish Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. In this and his following three journeys he discovered what he at first thought were the west indies. After this the Spanish Empire conquered the majority territory of America. The success of the Spanish New World Empire can be attributed to better support, and organization than any of the other New World Empires; making it the most efficient of all Empires.
Christopher Columbus is known for being an explorer and is said to have made one of the most important voyages in world history without even wanting to. Something else that is also believed is that he “opened up” the Americas to European nations, which changed the course of American history. Before he went on his voyage though, he was in need of resources. So he asked Portugal, France, Italy among many other countries but they all denied Columbus and thought his statement was incorrect. Columbus’ statement was that he had found a faster way to get to Asia than the Portuguese had, which was going around the continent of Africa. Columbus lived a majority of his life in Spain, so when it came to setting sail for the west, Spain was one of the first nations he asked for funding. Though it took Columbus a little more than a few years to convince a nation to fund his voyage, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand from Spain subsequently granted to endow him in 1492. He would then leave for “Asia” on August 3, 1492. There are many unanswered questions and thoughts on why Spain decided to finally fund Columbus’ voyage, especially since he was an explorer that was born in Italy.
Countries sent men across the globe to claim lands and riches. Christopher Columbus, an explorer backed by the Spanish monarchy, made four voyages to the Americas during his lifetime. While never realizing he had explored two unknown continents, Columbus’ voyages had far-reaching consequences. Exploration was about more than the discovery of new lands and riches, it was also about establishing
Columbus is a very influential figure in history. Because of his determination, two very different worlds met, and neither would leave the same. When Christopher Columbus sailed across the ocean in early August, 1492, he brought with him many foreign ideas and concepts, as well as new crops and animals that flourished in the new world. Columbus was able to spread christianity throughout the new world, both through force and through chance. He was also able to increase Spanish influence throughout the Americas, or what he thought were the Indies. His contribution to Europe, and Spain in particular, helped make them the leaders of their time. Christopher Columbus represents many good things about humanity. He represents bravery, idealism, and pride, which are all qualities we appreciate in humans. If he had not had the determination
Knights of Columbus is a Catholic brotherly society established in 1882 and headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut. It was initially made as a common advantage society for settler Catholics and has subsequent to developed to give numerous administrations to the Catholic group, including instruction and activism.
Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born man who managed to win the favor and funding of the Spanish monarchy. With this funding, Columbus led the most well-known voyage in human history: the voyage to the New World in 1492. This passage laid the foundation for future colonizations and, eventually, the creation of many nations in the New World. However, this voyage would not have gone past conceptualization if the Spanish monarchy decided against supporting Columbus and his exploration. Despite Columbus’ lack of Spanish descent, the Spanish monarchy aided his travels. While a variety of factors affected the monarchy’s decision, the primary reasons were Columbus’ experience in navigation, the assistance that Columbus received from Jewish
Columbus took advantage of being the leader to set sail to New Worlds that people from Spain have not been to before and have not exceeded at traveling to. He used the power he had which made him a controlling conquistador who would
McGivney at St. Mary's located in New Haven, Connecticut. Father McGivney established the Knights of Columbus to serve as a fraternity in order to pave the way for Irish-Catholic men to assimilate into the American culture, and to rescue Catholic families from poverty when the main income provider died. To meet this goal, Father McGivney created “a 'pass-the-hat' insurance system to protect the Catholic families in his parish. Over time, that system has evolved, and today they stay true to their founding mission through their multi-billion dollar, top-rated insurance program.” (1- KofC.org)
