Best Book of the Term- Harold & Maude
Have you ever read a book that has changed your life? A book that leaves you feeling motivated and enlightened. “Harold and Maude” by Colin Higgins does just that. This book is not simply a quirky love story between two unlikely individuals, but about the power of optimism and a unique way of living life, a true inspiration. However, besides the storyline, the writing style of the author has a huge impact in setting the book apart. When considering why the book “Harold and Maude” is the best book of the term the fundamentals of the writing style have to be taken into account from the points of view to the ending which, all play a crucial role in making the reading experience memorable. First is the use of the third-person omniscient point of view. According to the text, in the third-person omniscient point of view, “a narrator from “outside” the story world tells the story.” (WEAL, 45) The advantage of this style is the reader gets a unique perspective of getting to hear the characters thoughts. For example, “…she listened to the Chopin playing softly. How soothing, she thought…” (Higgins, 2) Here the reader can comprehend the character’s, state of mind as she enjoys the music playing in the background. Unlike in the book “World War Z” by Max Brooks where the author has used the epistolary style using the first-person point of view that, “reveals action through letters.” (WEAL, 46) The disadvantage of this writing style is the reader
2. What writing strategy does the author use that you think is effective, and why? For example, does he use examples, or does he make
The narrator is reliable and the point of view of the story is in third person omniscient. The narrator tells us what all the characters like Millicent are saying, doing, or thinking, causing readers to be able to grasp a deeper understanding of everything happening around them.
How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster is a book that explains there is more to literature than just a few words on a paper or a few pages in a book. Thomas Foster’s book portrays a relatable message to a wide based audience. This book is relatable for two reasons, the way it is written and the examples it uses. The book is written in a conversational manner, as if the reader was in a group discussion about books and writing. As for the examples, they are informative, descriptive, relative, and entertaining.
This way the reader gets more of a movie type of feel when reading. Just like movies, the viewer can experience a situation of one character, while another character has no idea what is going on. Using the different point of

The novel is written in 3rd person omniscient. This outside voice affects the plot by allowing readers to look into the mind of multiple characters, not just one. It allows readers to have an insight that the characters do
The epistolary form of writing allows the reader to feel as if they are receiving an actual account of the story. This type of writing makes the reader feel as if the character is writing to them. The plot seems more realistic and
Sharon M. Draper is a well-known author that started her career as an English teacher. Her writing career began after she entered and won a short story essay contest for a magazine. This led her to write her first book Tears of a Tiger, followed by Forged by Fire and Darkness Before Dawn. All three books have been very successful and in 1998 Tears of a Tiger received the Coretta Scott King Award. Draper also received the National Teacher of the Year Award for 1997-1998. She said that her main goal in writing has always been to inspire and encourage her students. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that most of her books are aimed towards high school teens. Draper’s writing style has been very controversial, which is the reason her first book was rejected by so many publishers. According to Draper, she sent copies of Tears of a Tiger to 25 different publishing companies and received 24 rejections. The only “yes” that she got was from Simon & Schuster. She said “the editors told me just to write the story, but I said kids don’t need all of that. They don’t need long narrative passages”. Some called her books profound, but she said,” she writes like that because it teaches multiple lessons that are good for the students to learn and for teachers to teach.”
Many will try to say every book is just a story, and nothing else. That what you literally read is literally what the author is trying to get across. John Steinbeck, author of “Of Mice and Men”, shows that this is not true. Many authors use specific stylistic choices when writing to help convey a deeper meaning than what is literally said. These stylistic writing choices help to change the literal and physical meaning of a writer's words, into something not seen or read on the surface, making it not “just a story”.
In the case of “Harold and Maude”, the use of the third-person omniscient point of view gives the narrator “godlike knowledge…seeing and hearing everything…” (WEAL, 45) The reader does not need to guess the emotions and thoughts felt by the characters, and there is less room for bias. Unlike in the case of the use of the epistolary style in the book “World War Z.” Next, the characters play a crucial role in shaping the story so there is a need for accurate development to keep the reader hooked. Higgins character Maude is multi-dimensional and she keeps evolving along with the story. Lastly, the ending brings the story home.
There are lots of better writer and novelist in the world who have given so many books and novels for reading, I have read some of them and some are discussed with everyone. There are famous writers like A. A. Milne, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, J K Rowling, Lewis Carroll and the list does not end here. They have given books for fiction, Children’s Literature, Literature, plays, short stories, Biographies, Fantasy, Poetry, and so on… First of all, what is First person narration? The first person narration is ‘The Story is told by a character that participates in the action of the story itself. First person Narrative is used by an author who wants a personal/subjective/intimate point of view’. In this essay, I will discuss the ways that first person narration affects the overall story which contains many things like Plot, settings of the story, Characters, the point of view, tone, irony, and symbolism. The story also contains many things for the third person too. But apart from all this, I m going to discuss the effects of the first person three main points are on styles and variations point of view and benefits of writing in the first person. Some other points are displayed in front. First I will discuss the style and variations then everything else.
The differences between first and third person perspectives are detrimental when making the decision on which to use when writing. They are almost exactly polar opposites of each other, ones advantage being the others disadvantage and vice versa. In the aspect of the
Authors use stylistic techniques to convey meaning and to bring richness and clarity to their pieces of writing. In the short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” a man named Smiley is cheated out of a bet after he was so confident that he was going to be victorious. In the short story “Cannibalism in the Cars,” a train full of political figures is stopped by a severe snowstorm, preventing them from continuing their journey. In “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and “Cannibalism in the Cars,” Mark Twain uses imagery, characterization, and foreshadowing in order to aid a reader's understanding of the stories.
Another important element of voice is the use of the second person point of view in the first paragraph. This technique is also used throughout the book, as filtered through Little Bee. The second person is an affecting way of getting the reader to empathize with its speaker. While Little Bee’s circumstances may be hard for many readers (particularly the audience that might have access and motivation to read the novel) to understand, the second person forces the reader to imagine herself in her stead. The use of second person as a tool ties in with one of the central themes of the book: what it takes for one person to understand the plight of another. This theme is evident at many points: Sarah and Andrew choose to vacation in Nigeria despite its war; Andrew refuses to cut off his finger though it may mean the girls will die; Sarah dismisses Andrew’s
The story is written in third person narrative. I feel the choice of narrative style is important, because it adds effect to the story to engage the reader.
