Chinua Achebe in his novel, Things Fall Apart, writes in a way that Erich Auerbach would describe as biblical style. Biblical style involves suspense, biblical allusions, the ambiguity of purpose, and gaps leading to interpretation. Achebe uses this biblical style to focus on the downfall of Okonkwo, the main character.

The Arrival by Shaun Tan is a graphic novel which follows the story of a man who embarks on the journey of migration. The notions of belonging that are highlighted in the text are belonging to a place and belonging to a family. The composer establishes these through the masterful employment of various visual techniques.

In chapter 3, The Old Catastrophe, Alison Bechdel makes one literary reference that I think works wonderfully in relating to her father. She uses the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. Alison's father sought to relate his life to Gatsby's. Gatsby and Bruce try to live their lives with the fact that they are hiding their true selves and live in a world of lies. The Great Gatsby is referenced for the fact Bruce uses objects to make their lives look more beautiful than what it really was. He is constantly working on the old house making upgrades and using restored furniture that cannot really be used as furniture, its purpose is of aesthetics. The constant references allowed me to understand more greatly about Alison's father. Having read The Great Gatsby multiple times, helps me to see how Bruce could relate to Gatsby.

The need to feel a sense of belonging is a powerful and universal one. This sense is formed from connections made with others. The result can be a range of emotions, from an increase in the feeling of security and self esteem, to feelings of unhappiness and loneliness. When someone does not fit in, often because they are different, the negative emotions that they feel can be very harmful.

     Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and The Second Coming by William Butler Yeats have been considered literary classics. Although there may be a gap between the times of publication, the themes and connotations are strikingly similar. In both works, there is a progression of chaos in time caused by change and eventually leads to an end.

A new English missionary has been set up in the village and has caused a great divide between the villagers. The main purpose of the section is to describe some of these events and changes that have taken place in Umuofia since Okonkwo's return. Exploring Revelation What is revelation? There are many different uses of the word revelation. It can be the speech act of making something evident, an enlightening or astonishing disclosure or a communication of knowledge to man by a divine or supernatural agency.

For hundreds of centuries, man has pondered what revelations or spiritual awakenings will occur in future's time. Poet William Yeats, has written, "The Second Coming," which foretells how the Second Coming brings horror and repression to the world. Yeats takes into speculation that the future will certainly bring further darkness than is already present in the current world. He employs various symbols and allusions to assert his claims of the world's ultimate demise. The purpose of these symbols and allusions make it possible to fully understand Yeats's point of view of the fall of our present civilization and the rise of a new civilization with a gloomy future.
