-By definition the term police brutality is “applied in the context of causing physical harm, it may also involve psychological harm through the use of intimidation tactics beyond the scope of officially sanctioned police procedure.” In today’s society we have police known as riot police, who are known throughout the world to use extreme force. Statistics show almost every time the riot police are involved in crowd control, there is at least one fatality and multiple injured. This is why I believe this is one of the most important issues in the World today. Police are there to protect us but from April 2009 to June 2010 in the United States there were 5986 reports of misconduct from police officers. Police brutality has today’s citizens doubting the police department, and how they go about their arrest. Police brutality is an everyday occurrence, especially in cities where there are large communities of Blacks, Latinos and Asians.

Police brutality is regarded as the abuse of power through the unnecessary use of excessive power in several aspects of the law enforcements. It occurs when law enforcement officers offer official duties to the public. Police brutality also involves the abuses through the correction of personnel in state, federal, and municipal penal facilities inclusive of military prisons. Meanwhile, it causes physical harm and is believed to create psychological harm by using intimidation tactics past the scope of the formally sanctioned police methods. Throughout the history of the United States police departments, law enforcement officers involved in police brutality have acted with the embedded approval

Police brutality is any unjustified use of excessive violence, abuse, humiliation or racism from a police officer that insults or degrades someone else. Police brutality occurrences range from crude language and harassment to severe beatings and murder. Some believe these incidences are caused because police officers are granted too much power as a result of the badges they carry. Other examples of police misusing their authority include discrimination, partisanship, public humiliation, and defamation. Victims of police brutality have been dehumanized by humiliation, discrimination and physical abuse.

As of September 1, 2015, in the United States police officers have killed 776 people and 161 of those people were unarmed at the time of their death (MintPress). There have been too many incidents where police officers have injured or killed someone that could have been prevented. Using maximum force with a suspect has become a routine in many confrontations. Officers have not been given the proper training to deal with individuals and how to handle them without using a weapon. If they were given more training on how to deal with situations resulting in using a weapon to stop an individual during certain scenarios police brutality situations would decrease, lives would be saved, and police would get their good reputation back. However, police departments would have to spend more money on re-training. Some people agree with police brutality and think that a civilian deserved their punishment, which is not right because no one deserves to be beaten or killed. Situations involving police brutality have been increasing throughout the years, which is a problem that must to be solved.

We hear about police misconduct case and wonder, Why don’t they do anything to stop this? Many say that we should keep the police officers’ perspective in mind. Others say that these actions are due to racism or post 9/11 paranoia. Whatever the excuse may be for these cases, there should be no need for violence anywhere. Police brutality videos go viral and reveal to the world that it actually happens and that it may happen to you too. This pervades people with fear and anger because their civil right are being violated. Riots are the outcome making the streets unsafe and chaotic. Police brutality is a growing problem all around the world. Although we may only hear of certain similar situations that go on in the United States, Police brutality is happening all around the world. This problem seems to have been around for a while now. Police brutality has been defined as, “the unwarranted or excessive and often illegal use of force against civilians by U.S. Police Officers.” There are many forms of Police Brutality, such as harassment (false arrest), intimidation, and verbal abuse. Although Police Officers do have to use force to carry out necessary duties, “force can be used only in a manner that meets standards of reasonableness.” In October 15, 1966, a group of African Americans came together to form a group named the Black Panther Party to stop this cruel abuse of power (BBP Britannica).

Throughout history, efforts to police society have been flawed by brutality in one way or another. Police Brutality exists in many countries and is only one of several forms of police misconduct. Abuse by law enforcement officers in the United States is one of the most serious human rights violations in the country. Police officers have engaged in unjustified shootings, severe beatings, fatal chokings, and unnecessarily rough treatment. Police brutality is an act of misconduct done by a member law enforcement through the use of an extreme amount of force to physically, mentally, or emotionally attack a member of society. Many law enforcement officers, those sworn to protect and serve, have abused their rights and authority to ferociously assault and manipulate citizens, even if they were innocent. Citizens who have been attacked have been left with physical and emotional scars that can never go away; in some cases, it has even caused death. In a report by David Packman, prepared for the Cato Institute in 2011, states that 247 deaths were linked to police misconduct cases.(Packman 2011)

A growing problem in our communities today is the excessive use of police force against unarmed civilians. There are many different types of excessive force used by the police and the news has become saturated with stories of officers killing, or severely maiming unarmed civilians. Just recently a 57 year old man was on his morning walk in Alabama when he was left partially paralyzed by an officer who threw him to the ground even though he was not resisting or fighting the officer. All around the country more and more instances of police brutality are occurring. Police brutality is a very serious problem in the United States. The term “police brutality” has been used sense 1872. According to Wikipedia, it is an act of misconduct done by a member of law enforcement by using an extreme amount of force to physically, mentally or emotionally attack a member of society. The job of a police officer can be a dangerous one and sometimes they are put in situations where excessive force is needed. The problem is when there is excessive force used by the people that have been sworn to protect and serve the Americans. Some are using excessive force when it is not needed. It has created society to have a fear of the police. The officers have power but need to be responsible with that power. It has become a controversial topic among communities. .

A controversial topic for decades, one issue that has made a noticeable impact in modern day society, especially in the year of 2015, is that of police brutality. Stemming from deep-rooted and institutionalized racism within law enforcement and other surrounding fields, it has sparked a firestorm of opposition, with many American citizens up in arms over the target that’s been seemingly casted on the backs of the black community. Despite the various protocols that have been implemented as a means of placing a more critical eye on law enforcement, we are still seeing more and more cases of excessive police force being committed daily without any sort of justice for these victims. The idea that an officer on duty has more legal protection than that of a normal civilian must have some merit, as a study done by Cato Institute found that “When police officers are charged, they are convicted at a lower rate than people in the general populace.” (Elinson and Palazzolo). By granting these officers more rights and not holding them to same authoritative ruling regular citizens are ordered to follow, it allows for corruption and discrimination in the forces that are expected to help us. Without reprimanding the police for violation of conduct, we will continue to see the same issues arise for many years to come.

Police brutality is a serious human rights violation in the United States. Over the past years police have acted out in ways that has made citizens wonder if they’re really doing their job. People have often questioned if police officers are abusing their authority. There are three main reasons why policemen engage in some type of brutality; society, personality, and the organizations that trained them are the reasons behind officers engaging in use of excessive force.

Due to current happenings nationwide, police brutality has become a topic of interest amongst the American people. The Grand Jury’s decision to acquit certain police officers under trial for police brutality has caused people all over the world, let alone the nation, to decide who was right: the victim or the suspect. Some believe police brutality needs to be stopped to ensure the feeling of safety and security for all citizens. Others believe that police brutality is a form of safety and security for the innocent. This unconstitutional route of “protection” police have decided to take needs to come to an end immediately.
