“To what extent was Hitler responsible for the Second World War?”
‘From the first day that he "seized power," January 30, 1933, Hitler knew that only sudden death awaited him if he failed to restore pride and empire to post-Versailles Germany.’[1] The Second World War was the deadliest battle in History. Figures estimate that over 59 million people were killed during its conflict. German leadership was under Adolf Hitler, a ruthless dictator who was the chancellor of Germany during the majority of the conflict. It is debatable that Hitler was solely responsible for the events in which lead to and occurred during the Second World War. Hitler was responsible to a large degree, however cannot be accountable for every aspect in which the

Hitler was openly accepting that his actions could have caused war with Britain and France, but they remained proactive in their dealings with Hitler, instead trying to reason with the German leader and make compromises in return for peace. France and Germany avoided any military action at this point in time as The Great Depression had hindered their military rearming production and war would be costly and in particular France, public opinion opposed any conflict with Hitler’s German forces.[7]
From the time the Treaty of Versailles was completely ignored by Hitler, Germany was well underway causing a large riff between themselves and Britain and France.
In 1936, Hitler remilitarised the Rhineland by marching 30,000 troops[8] into Cologne on the 7th of March 1936. To prove that the remilitarisation was popular and warranted, a plebiscite was held and the results were 98.8%[9] in favor of the move. Hitler’s confidence was at an all time high by this time. Showing his power to Britain and France and discounting the Treaty of Versailles placed Germany in a commanding position. Also by 1936, the formation of the Axis occurred. It meant that the two fascist powers in Germany and Italy were to work together on matters of mutual interest.[10] The formation of the Axis later developed in May 1939 into a military cooperation which was named the
Adolf Hitler and his actions are the cause of World War II. “Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who don't want to fight in this world of eternal struggle they don't deserve to live, ” by Adolf Hitler. This is an important quote since Hitler believed in the power of war. His parents died when he was young, so he went into the army very young and fought in World War I.
On February 3, 1933 during a meeting with German military leaders Hitler said his foreign policy was the conquest of Eastern Europe (Weinberg, 1970), also in 1933 Germany withdrew from the League of Nations, which should have been a warning sign that they were planning something big. This along with the increase of the Wehrmacht (German Army) to 600,000 should have thrown up some red flags to Britain and France that Hitler was up to no go. This was another of Hitler’s direct violations of the Versailles Treaty, yet no one stopped him, instead they let him continue untouched. Then in March of 1936
If Britain and France had abandoned their policy of appeasement and retaliated against Hitler's aggression war could have been averted. Appeasement was deeply embedded into British foreign policy, even to the the extent were they would not honor their military commitments to France under the Treaty of Locarno, that if Germany were to remilitarise the Rhineland, Britain would offer them support. So, when Hitler ordered armed cars to enter the Rhineland in March 1936, France failed to retaliate. This was the ideal time to have halted Hitler as Allan Bullock quotes Hitler saying “If the French had then marched into the Rhineland we would have had to withdraw with our tails between our legs”, because Germany was still militarily weak and war would have lasted six weeks rather than six years. However, the appeasers were determined to stop any violence, that they failed to see, according to Keith Eubank, had they “retaliated against the remilitarisation with force, the German military units would have withdrawn and perhaps Hitler would have been overthrown; the drift to war would have been halted and World War II averted”.
However, British and French military intervention in the Rhineland incident, 1936 could have been an alternative to appeasement. Their reluctance to take action permitted Germany to increase her power (within 18 months Germany’s rate of rearmament surpassed that of Britain and France), whilst also contributing to the burgeoning belief that the League of Nations was ineffective. Hitler himself stated that "If France had then marched into the Rhineland; we would have had to withdraw with our tails between our legs." Indeed, many historians concur as invading the
France and Great Britain were afraid of another world war, so they did not really do much about it, they justified it saying how the treaty of Versai was a bit too harsh and so they let the Nazis have a bigger army. The appeasement went on and on like the Nazis annexed some land with German speaking people, France and Great Britain were afraid of a war so they let it slide. If France and Great Britain had not had this fear, they could have made Germany have a smaller army and then the world war may have not have happened, but they were scared and were afraid of war, so it did
Stolley writes that Hitler made a Nazi party and more than 100,000 Germans had joined the Nazi. They started to build a modern Air Force and enlarged the small army allowed them under the Treaty of Versailles (Stolley 12). As Hitler was consolidating his power in his homeland, he also began moving toward his ultimate goal: world domination. The next big step was when Hitler made two important alliances, Italy and Japan, that ruled by Benito Mussolini and Emperor Hirohito. They called themselves as the Axis, the major capitalist democracies.
After the French had been defeated the only nation that fought with the Germans was Britain. The Germans tried to come to peace with Britain, but only to have domination of Europe. Britain did not consider the offer at all, instead they prepared for a Nazi invasion. The Germans armed forces air-raided London and throughout Britain multiple times. The British kept resisting the raids and the German armed forces had been defeated
In the year 1940, many Germans stood in a square, saluting and chanting Hitler 's name. World War II has begun and many Germans hope for improvements in the economy. Their leader is Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler, dictator of Germany in World War II, was a powerful speaker who caused over 5 million deaths in concentration camps. Though Hitler 's impact can be felt in modern times, the roots of his atrocious behavior began in childhood—more specifically—high school.
World War Two will go down as one of the bloodiest and most cruel wars of all time. Humanity will hopefully and probably never have one again. The blame was mostly put on the axis powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan who were defeated in the end. Although little is said about the Allied powers and how they contributed in the start of World War Two. An indisputable fact is that Hitler’s Germany drew first blood in the war and that ultimately brought war to a start, but the Allied governments supported Hitler and his fascist ideals. Both the United Kingdom and the United States of America were so engrossed in the spread of communism and how to cease it from spreading. The Allies didn't perceive Germany as a threat since they were all trading partners
To begin with, Hitler’s leadership was significant because it affected many countries such as Poland, Austria, and other nations in order to gain control and make Germany acquire more power and territory. In other words, Hitler used propaganda and verbally attacked other political parties to gain popularity. Still, Hitler was responsible for the deaths of millions of people not only the ones that were held in the concentration camps but also from other countries and the soldiers that fought for their lives during the war. Though after war many blame Hitler for the start of the second war conflict between other nations was already happening instead Hitler made it worse by invading neighboring nations and spreading unnecessary rumors.
After World War I, the whole world was thrown into a depression. Germany, hit hard by the Treaty of Versailles, was in economic ruins, its citizens desperate to rebuild again. That caused Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialist Party, to gain power as a totalitarian dictator. In 1938, with his new power, Hitler annexed Austria. Great Britain and France were not happy with this action, but they didn’t step up to stop it because they were a part of the League of Nations, which could not use any military force against aggressive countries. Unconstrained, Hitler continued and invaded Czechoslovakia next. Irked leaders from different European countries decided to meet up with Hitler at the Munich Conference after this action. There, he appeased
World War Two was most definitely the bloodiest and harshest times in all of human history. It is also the most prime example of Total War. One of the main causers of the war was Adolf Hitler. He believed that Germans were the Aryan of all the people. As a result, he created his Final Solution. In the path of ridding the world of all Jewish people, Hitler became the ruler over Germany, and turned it into a Fascist state. After he had succeeded this, he indirectly made Germany a Totalitarian country. Hitler became a supreme ruler. Supporters of Hitler became known as Nazi’s, who started the idea of Nazism. There were many other reasons for the tragedy known as World War 2. There was the start of coalition governments. As no government could
Adolf Hitler, leader of the German Nazis 1934-1945. His fascist policies were what led to World War II and the deaths of approximately 50 million lives. An estimated 6 million of those lives were included in the mass murder of Jews in concentration camps, which later became known as the Holocaust. Hitler had the tendency of distrust and competition with others in his army. Because of all of his actions and all the policies that he enforced he was said the be responsible for the World War II.
Both Britain and France tried to stop the beginning of another war, which they knew would be as bad as, if not worse than, World War One, but to no avail. By 1939, the League of Nations had virtually fallen apart, Germany and Russia were ready for an all-out war, Britain and France were not, the Treaty of Versailles was almost forgotten, and war was lurking in the shadows, waiting to strike. Hitler had taken the route he knew would take him straight to war. However, his unavoidable plans were not the only reason the war began. It is debatable whether the methods of France and Britain were the most effective they could have chosen, or if they did, in fact, make it worse.
Some may say one man is the one cause for World War 2 and all of the abysmal effects of the war. Really there is one thing that should be blamed for the destruction. AS a result of the Treaty of Versailles, that ended World War 1, Germany starts World War 2 costing fifty million soldiers and innocent civilians their lives. After the Treaty of Versailles was signed Germany falls into an economic depression. Germany was blamed for the war so they have to pay for the wars costs. This made food hard to come by for many people. Leaving them hungry and in some cases dying from starvation. Therefore when a man, by the name of Hitler, comes strolling into town with a lot of money and starts to help people saying everything will be okay people start
