Turbochargers: Internal Combustion Engine and Turbocharger

Good Essays

Society is driven by the thought of improving every existing invention to make it bigger, smaller, more cost effective, or simply better. The internal combustion engine has been used in transportation for everyone who lives in a civilized area; whether it is a motorcycle, car, bus, airplane, etc. The most important advances in technology for these engines involve efficiency. Gas mileage, performance, and displacement are key concerns for all engineers of internal combustion engines. With the invention of the turbocharger all of these factors can be improved. The inventor, progression, impact, and current adaptation of the turbocharger are very important in understanding this engineering innovation. The entire world can thank …show more content…

New ways of oil lubricating were added along with water-cooling. The sizes of turbochargers now range from the diameter of a baseball to larger than a basketball. The turbocharger has made a significant impact in all of our lives. The turbocharger enables millions of engines around the world to make more power and give engines higher efficiency. Ships, planes, cars, trucks, etc. would all have to have bigger engines that would use more fuel to accomplish what they do with a turbocharger. The air pollution and gas shortage would be much worse if none of our engines were turbocharged. Furthermore turbochargers are used in many sports. The two main sports that simply rely on turbochargers are drifting and rally racing. These cars need to be light, so they cannot have big displacement engines thus relating back to forced induction. Major companies such as Garrett, HKS, Turbonetics, and Banks are always coming up with new ways to improve turbochargers. These companies drive the industry in terms of turbochargers because of the constant improvement of the already great invention. Although there are many factory vehicles that come with turbochargers the aftermarket industry truly drives the need for improvement. Drifting alone has become a billion dollar industry causing manufacturers to work harder than ever to make their individual products stand out from the crowd. In the sport of drifting ninety percent of the cars in the
