Unconcious Dreaming
There are many facts that are unknown about the mind. For centuries, philosophers and scientists have tried to understand how it works. We have learned that the mind has a number of different levels of processing. Before Sigmund Freud “nearly all the previous research and theorizing of psychologists had dealt with conscious, such as perception, memory, judgment, and learning“ (Hunt185). Freud brought forth a number of theories that dealt with “the unconscious and its crucial role in human behavior”(Hunt 185). The unconscious is a storage area for information that is not being used. It is also the home of “powerful primitive drives and forbidden wishes that constantly generated pressure on the conscious mind”(Hunt

My dream about surfing stemmed from when we were there, we went to the Pipeline, on the north shore of Oahu. The dream itself was weird. I was on my board and I fell off. The weird part was that when I was in the water I started sinking, I decided to try to swim to the surface. I figured that the water was much deeper than I thought, so I kept swimming. I started to run out of breath and I began to panic. I woke up from the dream and found that my sheet was in my mouth blocking my intake of air. This shows how physiological needs can manifest themselves in our dreams.
An individual’s unconscious mind combines bits and pieces of information and places them together. Dreams are almost always visual. “Forty to fifty percent of dreams have some form of communication present in them and a very small percentage of dreams give the dreamer the ability to use his or her five senses”(Encarta). Dreams allow one to take a closer look into their mind in a quest for self-discovery. In ancient Greece dreams were believed to be messages from the gods. Hippocrates and Aristotle believed that dreams contained physiological information that may be cause of future illnesses. Dreams can be used to solve a number of different types of problems. In The Interpretation of Dreams, by Sigmund Freud he states “As regards the dream, all the troubles of waking life are transferred by it to the sleeping
It is universally known that dreams are full of meanings and emotions. In Freud’s theory, all dreams are wish fulfillments or at least attempts at wish fulfillment. The dreams are usually presented in an unrecognizable form because the wishes are repressed. Freud proposes there are two levels in the structure of dreams, the manifest contents and the latent dream-thoughts. The manifest dream, a dream
The best part of a long, hard-working day is when you finally get to lay in your bed, close your eyes and let your imagination run free. As you sleep your mind takes you to another place far away from the real world. You begin to dream. Over the night, you may have several dreams. In the morning, you may wake up and wonder what your dreams were suppose to mean for you and your life. By analyzing your dream, it "gives a true picture of the 'subjective state'-how we really feel about ourselves-which the conscious mind cannot or will not give" (Wietz 289). In order to find the meaning of a dream, you have to pick out the most important symbols and define them. But you may be wondering what exactly is a symbol?
The purpose of this study was to see if political views or your personal background has anything to do with the types of dreams that you have. There were women and men that participated, by personal or internet surveys. The questions were asking general questions like age and race and the types and the frequency of your dreams. There were 700 people to do the interviews and the researchers chose the liberal and conservative men and women. There were 234 participants in total, conservative and liberal men and women, more liberalism. One of the reasons for this research was how your dreams were based off things that were important to you in real life. There are four sets of sleeping, which are general sleeping, Frequency of Memorable Dreams and
There's no limit to what the mind can experience during a dream and really no rhyme or reason to what you
Dreams originally were admired as being a source of knowledge, giving information to the dreamer about their present and future prospects. The dreams held secrets, but it was not always easy to access them as you needed an interpreter to discover the hidden meanings. After the dreams were read, only then they would properly belong to the dreamer. This was the theory long before Freud, but then a new understanding of dreams came to show that a dream was more about one’s past then their future. This meaning ‘that dreams were a symbol to your future’ was to inform us what was yet to come in your life. Also that your path in life had already been written out for us to for fill. A great example of this is the story of ‘Oedipus’ because his fate
The causes of dreams, the different types of dreams and the significance of dream content have always been a subject of curiosity and interest.
Dreaming can be defined as a component and form of memory processing, aiding in the consolidation of learning and short-term memory to long-term memory storage. I believe we dream to de-clutter our brains just like cleaning up operations in a computer which helps in refreshing the mind to prepare for the next day. Every day we are bombarded with new information, both consciously (eg. learning) and unconsciously (eg. advertising). This modern dream theory suggests dreaming is a way to file away key information and discard meaningless data. It helps keep our brains organized and optimizes our learning. This theory hasn’t been proven by dream
Dreams have been a mystery of the human mind since the beginning of time. Their purpose and importance to our lives varies depending on where you go for information, but it is clear that dreams are something that come along with being human. According to the theory of Sigmund Freud, dreams are a way for our mind to process the things we are feeling in the form of symbolism (Freud 350). While many brush off their dreams as simply a way for their brain to relieve stress and process the previous day, there is a large percentage of people who believe that their dreams are a message, or a warning, from the beyond.
These studies were focused by the well-known Philosophers like Freud and Aristotle in On Prophecy in Sleep. Psychologist Joan Schön builds on the topic of dreams through the ideology of many great philosophers and states, "Freud made the greatest contribution to our understanding of dreams, his followers diverged in their thinking and developed differing theories." .Schön’s purpose is to give the reader a better understanding of philosophical views on dreams in order to allow us to have a better understanding of major breakthroughs of dreams . (76-108). Freud believes that dreams have a very adaptive function in which they are meant to preserve sleep and keep us in a healthy state of mind in our sleep. This might explain why we may wake up when having horrific nightmares and things of that
I just stared at my desk stunned. I kept asking myself if what I heard was true or if I was just in a lucid dream. I had just talked to Ben the day prior; “there was no way that he could be gone,” I said to myself. I could tell that this was definitely not a dream when I looked over to my friend Robert and his face was flushed of color, just like mine.
Dreams have been around as long as the first civilization came to be and have been a normal part of human existence. One third of your life is spent sleeping, and of that third, on average you will have spent a total of about six years of it dreaming. Most people dream on average two hours every night, but you can have anywhere from four to seven dreams in one night. According to research, the most common setting for a dream is in your own house. In our dreams we can do anything we want and be whoever we want to be. Our dreams are an escape from reality. While we dream we are unable to control our actions and choose our surroundings. We let our minds take over. Sometimes dreams can be understood in the context of repressed thoughts. Dreaming serves as an outlet for those thoughts and impulses we repress during the day. When we go to sleep at night and slip into our dream state, we feel liberated and behave in a manner that we do not allow ourselves to in our everyday life. Visions and ides can come from your dreams. Often, authors, screenwriters, and even poets turn to their dreams for inspiration. The think quest oracle library goes on to tell about the most well-known of the modern dream

Lucid dreaming is: dreaming while aware that you are dreaming. Webster's definition of lucidity continues with "clearness of thought or style" and a "presumed capacity to perceive the truth directly and instantaneously". In this sense, lucid dreaming is associated with controlling one's dreams as they are happening. It is a term that was coined by Frederik van Eeden in the Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, Vol. 26, 1913:
An individual obtains about seven to eight hours sleeping per night and according to the dream encyclopedia (2009) we spend approximately one-third of our lives in a state of sleep, much of the night filled with dreams" (p.16). Judith Duerk, who is a well-renowned writer, refers to a dream as an alternate course which can change a person's entire life. The Dream Encyclopedia points out that the meaning of a dream would be, "a spiritual world distant from the physical," in no way demeaning their definition, but a dream is a way to motivate a person spiritually in order to physically and mentally prepare oneself to fulfill his or her goals, by an act of visualization and imagination while asleep. A dream brings you are a step closer to
