Antisocial Personality disorder is defined as a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others (American Psychiatric Association, 659). This means any repeated actions that do not take into account any other factors like people's emotions are a case for Antisocial Personality Disorder. A diagnosis of APD requires three out of seven criteria as dictated by the American Psychiatric Association (659):

In chapter 15 of Exploring Psychology, the author discuss the basics of psychological disorders. Within this assignment, the psychological disorder of my choosing is Dissociative Identity Disorder. The commonality of the disorder is rare. Although we’ve disassociated ourselves in some form or the other with our ability to daydream, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is more severe and is usually linked to trauma. Formerly the disorder was known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). Individuals who suffer from this disorder usually have more than one aspect of themselves or personalities, whom he or she is completely unaware of. Sufferers of the disorder have to deal with a variety of symptoms such as memory loss, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, black-outs, impulsiveness, and perception of being detached from the self. The severity of the trauma is usually extreme, repetitive, and long-term. The individual may have an extensive history of physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse.

Multiple Personality Disorder is a condition that many people probably have not heard of. Among those who have heard of it, there are even less who actually know what it is. However, according to Piper (1997) there were about 6,000 cases diagnosed in North America alone in 1986. Some experts estimate that multiple personality disorder, or MPD, affects 5 to 10 percent of the population, or about 100 million people worldwide. For such a widespread disorder, the public's lack of knowledge about it is pretty shocking. Antisocial personality disorder is a disorder of the brain that cause one to disregard other people’s rights by violating them, they lack empathy and are very malicious towards others, they enjoy the suffering of individuals whether it be an animal or human being and it usually occurs during child/teen hood and worsens as the child ages. With this disorder comes a hatred toward society due to lack of knowledge of the real world “Many of the children grow up shy, lonely, highly sensitive, with feelings of being rejected, unloved and neglected by family and/or society”(Miller, 2014, p.13). Isolation at young ages causes children to not know how to interact with others in the real world they think that it is okay to violate personal space because they were never taught what that was. With the isolation and feelings of oddity in the child, they begin to manifest fantasies within their own mind (Miller, 2014, p.14). Many times the child starts out with violent sexual fantasies that they would like to act out but do not have an execution plan so they experiment on inanimate objects or even themselves or family members who will not tell such as younger siblings. This quickly escalates to the things they do to strangers in society starting with smaller steps such as stalking, peeping tom, or abduction. With such successes, they begin their reign of terror

Personalities are often very hard to figure out. Each person has a unique and sometimes complex personality and sometimes they do not mix with others. Different psychologists have different theories as to why people are the way they are. One theory is the psychoanalytic theory. Psychoanalytic theory digs into a person’s mind to find out where their problems stem from. The theories stem from childhood and then dig deep into who each person is as an adult. The following reflects on the theories of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Alfred Adler; they all have similarities, yet are completely different.

The human mind is a mysterious and complex enigma. Neurologists and psychiatrists are still on the verge of understanding behavioral patterns to the fullest extent. There are many behavior patterns that people are not fully aware of most of the time. However, some people have behavior patterns that affect their daily lives. These patterns are ingrained into their personality and can prevent them from reaching life goals. These traits are some of the fundamentals of personality disorders. Psychiatrist Alexander L. Chapman describes them as, “a long-lasting pattern of relating to the world that doesn’t work well.” (Chapman and Gratz) Personality disorders affect socializing and basic relationship skills that disrupt friendships and daily interactions; a better understanding of these disorders will help those who face similar problems to get diagnosed and further the research of these disorders; the top four most commonly diagnosed personality disorders in the U.S. are Borderline Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Schizoid Personality Disorder.

Multiple Personality Disorder is a mental illness which most commonly has been referred to as Dissociative disorder or DID in recent years[1]. The illness commonly disassociated with schizophrenia finds a person experiencing two or more clearly differing personalities which will in habit assume control at some stage. Changing from one personality to another in a matter of seconds, the person will actually believe that they have more than one personality. DID can co-occur with other illnesses which include a range of anxiety disorders. “A personality disorder is a long-standing, inflexible, maladaptive pattern of perceiving, thinking, or behaving.” (Gerrig, Zimbardo, 2008, 470). One type of personality disorder is borderline personality disorder when a person is very instable and frequently lashes out in anger. The person will be very impulsive and are prone to self-destructive behavior. Another is antisocial personality disorder in which a person is frequently displaying unlawful behavior such as stealing or causing fights.

Have you ever been sitting day dreaming, or got lost in a book or work? After you finish the book or your work, you come back to earth and remember what occurred while you were day dreaming or lost in that book or work. With a person that has MPD, it is not that easily done with most. Most individuals that have MPD do not remember anything that had occurred within hours or minutes of the event. Some think MPD is a hoax created by movies such as “Three faces of Eve” or “Sybil”, but is that a fact.
