The right to self-organization is the right of every worker to join or any legitimate worker's organization, association or union of choice, but these rights have always been controversial in nature and have caused controversy dating back to the eighteenth century. The industrial revolution prompted a wave of new trade disputes and the government introduced measures to prevent collective action by the workers. At that time most countries deemed labor unions illegal, and constructed strict and harsh penalties, including jail and execution, for the attempt to organize such affiliations. Despite these unfair punishments, unions succeeded in forming, and acquired political powers resulting in the passage of legislation, which legalized organizing efforts which is a huge stepping stone in unionization history. Unionization provides a voice through bargaining power for all aspects of concern from workers prospective. Addressing issues individually like inequalities in the workplace, wages, benefits and working conditions are not an economic reality because of the fact that an individual has no bargaining power on their own. As a member of a union along with fellow employees, there is an increase of bargaining power because of their capacity to collectively take action, which could effect the daily operation of the company. For employers, the presence of unions within a company means that the employers who recognize the union, can work with them using effective communication, which could lead to improved performance on the part of the employees, company, decreased turnover and increased overall company morale.
