Body Language Positive body language is important, and if with young children it is best to come down to their level. Smile and use positive gestures like a ‘thumbs up’. Often I will have to remind the pupils of their behaviour, this can be done with a simple glance or folding of the arms. Listening and Responding. It is important to listen and the pupil an opportunity to speak, so they can express their own thoughts and feelings. You should respond appropriately and you may need to repeat back to make sure of your understanding. This also makes the pupil aware that you are listening and are interested. For example in my setting I had a pupil tell me that his Dad hurt his thumb with a hammer when he was putting a picture up. I repeated the sentence back to him but also continued the conversation by asking questions like, ‘Did his Dad have a sore thumb’, and ‘Did he need a plaster’. This showed that I was interested and I was also listening. The pupil responded well and was very excited to be telling me about it. Eye Contact Eye contact is a key factor to consider when communicating with pupils, this also shows that you are listening and interested. Looking away is deemed to be ill mannered. You also need to give them your attention, if possible stop what you are doing and actively listen. Often I will have a pupil come up to me and ask me a question when I am in the middle of

It is important to communicate effectivly in order that information is understood and to aviod any confusion. With children the main key is to be happy and calm, and for the child to see that you are aprochable for them to seek help, advise or talk about their needs. Help them understand what they are expected to do and how they are expected to behave. Been able to find oppertunities to speak and make conversation using simple questions, especially if a child lacks confidence.
To communicate effectively with children and young people, you need to remember that children learn to communicate through responses and reactions of others. You need to show that you are interested in what they say and that what they are saying is important. This can be done in various ways:
There are similarities when communication with children, young people and adults. For example; eye contact should be maintained, active listening should be demonstrated with both age groups. Responding positively to feedback that has been given, speak clearly to both age groups.
To communicate high expectations for the students, I will always use positivity and encouragement. I will use popsicle sticks with the students name on them to call on each student to answer questions to avoid favoritism and to get the students to participate in the lesson.
