This is mostly due to the competitive requirements such as large capital, complex and integrated network, expertise, and technology. These factors are very difficult to bring together in a short time horizon. This also creates entry and exit barrier into this industry. What is very interesting is that the company delivers s packages each business day for 1.8 million shipping customers and over 6.1 million consignees in over 200 countries and territories. In 2009 alone, the company delivered an average of 15.1 million pieces per day worldwide. The company's primary business is the time-definite delivery of packages and documents. Recently the company has extended its capabilities to incorporate a wide array of addition services. The company has distinctive strengths in its balance sheet, brand, corporate culture, and global reach. All of which can be utilized in regards to human resources and recruitment.

The United Parcel Service is one of the largest companies in the global courier delivery service industry, with a net income of about $3 billion and revenues exceeding $53 billion. Headquartered in the United States, a large part of UPS’s market share and revenues come from the business it conducts in Europe. The logistics design of UPS has three distinct functions, consolidation, distribution, and fragmentation. Consolidation is the collection of parcels to then be sent to distribution. Distribution works on a hub-to-hub basis with distance determining what mode of transportation will be used (Air or Ground). Fragmentation is the final design step in the UPS logistics design, combined with consolidation for the most part; this function is where products are delivered to their final destination. These basic functions have kept UPS a world leader in the logistics field and well ahead of their competitors.

ORION technology, however not required, but a helpful, added resource, helps drivers make better decisions by providing them with accurate road maps, so that the drivers can work efficiently and effectively, but most importantly safely, in delivering their packages to their customers in a timely manner. This not only helps promote the business, but increases overall productivity. This also leads to more satisfied customers. ORION provides new and old drivers with important information based on current travel time and providing suggested roadways. When a customer calls entrusting UPS with the transport of a package, the distribution process is initiated. The order is accepted and entered in the system. Now the route is planned according to the wishes of the customer, the place and time of departure and the delivery. These operations take place completely automatically after input by the employee. Either the driver gets a pick-up recorded on his log during his route or the next day. This depends on the time the order is taken. Assuming the case of the driver to schedule the pick-up his route, when he picks up the package it is scanned using the Diet. The package is taken to the distribution centre in the evening along with the other pick-ups, where the package is sorted. Here, a scanning (inbound) is also carried out confirming that the package has arrived at the UPS Centre. The next scan (Outbound) follows when the packages are loaded in the feeder. From there the feeder transports the packages to the Hub
