Vladimir Lenin, founder and leader of the Bolsheviks, failed the Soviet Union with his New Economic Policy (NEP), which was designed to bring more money to the USSR and help their economy flourish. This was introduced with the idea of “War Communism.” War Communism started during World War I and dealt with the economic and social problems facing the USSR during the war. With most resources going to the military, grain production was low and forced millions of peasants to move and turn to cannibalism. Peasants tried to revolt for change but were killed. Because of this, the Bolsheviks lost their main supporters (working class, peasants, etc.) This led Lenin to bring about the NEP. Many in his party saw the Capitalistic ideals of the NEP as a

Analyzing the Bolshevik State compared to Marxism can be difficult because Marx, Engels and their followers gave relatively little thought to what the state would look like after a socialist revolution. Engels famously wrote, “the state is not ‘abolished,’ it withers away,” which highlights the hazy and unfixed nature of Marx and Engle’s writings on the ultimate, classless society they envisioned. Further, what they did write is subject to the differing interpretations by numerous socialist parties all claiming to be Marxist. As discussed earlier, Lenin claimed he simply reshaped Marxism to fit the conditions of Russia. Others argue his interpretation was not true Marxism at all. However, the basic principles of a socialist state in the eyes of Marx’s are outlined in the Communist Manifesto as follows:

“Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in ancient Greek republics: Freedom for slave owners” (Lenin). Lenin was founder of the Russian Communist Party, leader of the Bolshevik Revolution, and architect and first head of the Soviet state. He was also the inspiration for ‘Leninism” which was conjoined with Marx's work to create Marxism-Leninism. He has been regarded as one of the greatest revolutionary leaders and thinkers since Marx. Vladimir Lenin was an important Russian leader that helped shape Russian society to what it is now.

Lenin and Stalin had opposing ways on what the Communist government should look like. Lenin gave the power to the Communist party, and Stalin gave most of the power to himself. Both Lenin and Stalin used a secret police force that kept the power. Lenin's new economic policy allowed for some peasants to have their own land, while Stalin made a Command economy were the government owns everything. Under Lenin, the standard of living rose for many peasant and workers. Under Stalin the standard of living fell and peasants were struggling. Lenin and Stalin had differents views on Russian politics, but Stalin's way contributed to more suffering of people.

In the 1915s the Western countries had advanced technologies, a better economy and were managed successfully. However, Russia was trying something new, Communism. Lenin believed that Communism would make the country better. Shortly after his death, the man of steal, otherwise known as Stalin took control. He claimed to have the same ambitions; create a strong army, build up the industrial strength in a socialist society (Kreis, 2012). Despite their similar goals the actions they took to achieve them were completely different; Lenin is known to be on of the greatest leaders of Russia and Stalin the worst.

The strive for socialism goes far beyond the torture and rape of an unfortunate few, rather the idea that everything under communism was free and that there was no such thing as selling products for profits would lead to “the greatest human disaster in Europe since the Black Death.” Still, many more unfortunate others found themselves on market displays to be sold as food. Even with the prospect of cannibalism and the terror that Lenin’s secret police caused, the masses still believed that he was their savor and didn’t know anything of the horrors that occurred under his rule. Many families worshipped Lenin as a god and to speak otherwise was seen as a great disrespect. The amount of hope that they poured into Lenin and his idea of communism just serves to show how desperate the Russian people had become.

Lenin grew up in a middle class family but was never fond of the political party and the class system. Having a Marxist political belief system, Lenin wanted the government to own and control everything. After taking control of the Soviet Union, Lenin wanted supreme power for himself and the government, with hopes to make all of the citizens’ equal. The difference between Lenin and Stalin was that Stalin wanted this all done in ten years so he was more drastic than Lenin. Peasants were not at all pleased because they liked how they were prospering before, so to retaliate they burned their crops and slaughtered their livestock as to sabotage what the central government was trying to do and how they were trying to get it done.18 The slaughter of livestock and burning of crops led to the famine of 1931-1932 that caused the death of five to seven million people.19 The Ukraine was especially hit hard by famine it was not unusual for families to starve and stay alive for as long as they could then they would just die.20 The famine caused so many deaths that trains were needed to collect corpses from peasant villages who had died from starvation .21 In extreme cases, although not too uncommon, families would turn to cannibalism to stay alive.
