Week 17 (2nd Post) – Classroom Makeover, Essential Oils for Teachers & Students What are Essential Oils? Essential oils are extracts from leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of various plants. The oils are distilled into extremely concentrated forms and contain active ingredients that are thought to have beneficial effects. The use of essential oils as treatment for various ailments is known as aromatherapy. Holistic therapies and homeopathic remedies have been gaining in popularity and use in recent years as a means to address areas of need such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Essential oils are an alternative to prescription medication to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with attention, deficit and hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, attention deficit disorder, ADD, Autism and other pervasive developmental disabilities. The research has proven that these oils help to calm, focus and soothe both children and adults. In a study by Dr. Terry S. Friedmann, “…The common treatment in our society for ADHD is usually the drugs Ritalin, chemically named methylphenidate, or to a lesser extent the drug Dexedrine, chemically named dextroamphetamine. Ritalin is said to control the symptoms in 70% of the cases; however, neither medication sustains any healing properties. Unfortunately, both drugs have been shown to have similar side effects on the brain, mind, and behavior including conditions such as psychosis, mania, drug abuse, and addiction. Ritalin can
The most common way to treat ADHD is with stimulants or anti-depressants. "These medications stimulate the child's "brake pedal" whereas without treatment the child is all "gas pedal" (Taylor 63)." The most common drugs prescribed for this disorder are Dexedrine, Ritalin and Cylert. They are effective for a four to five hour time period while the sustained-released tablets are effective for seven to eight hour time periods. The drugs stimulate the central nervous system similar to amphetamines. It activates the brain stem arousal system and the cortex (Bailey 2).
An older study conducted by Dr. Brian Reichow, adjunct professor at Yale University School of Medicine, and his colleagues discovered similar findings, “Methylphenidate, [a psychostimulant medication, was] effective for treating ADHD symptoms in children.”
Those diagnosed with ADHD have a hard time concentrating and are prone to outburst based on the emotions they are feeling at the time rather than reason. This is caused by lower levels of dopamine in their brains. The most commonly prescribed drug to treat ADHD is Ritalin. The dopamine transporter within the brain moves dopamine from the synapse to the sending neuron. Ritalin blocks the dopamine transporter, therefore, increasing the dopamine level at the synapse.
Many drugs have been developed to treat ADD and ADHD. One of these drugs is Methylphenidate otherwise known as Ritalin. It is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for treatment of ADD and ADHD. Use of Ritalin is up 700 percent since 1990 (ABC News). Other drugs also used in treatment of ADD and ADHD include Zoloft, Praxil, and Cylert. Ritalin is a drug that is used to restore neurotransmitters in those that lack or have malfunctioning nerve impulses in the
Today there is a great argument regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ADD/ADHD and who has the right to decide what happens. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is the most common neurobehavioral disorder in young children. This is also one of the most common public health problems that we have today. There is an extreme rise of the prescription medicine Ritalin that doctors are prescribing to help with this specific type of disorder. Many adults believe that this medication is a "quick fix" that is not harmful to their children. When Ritalin is prescribed, it is to be introduced to the body in slow, steady doses, which simulates the brain's natural dopamine production. Parents of children that are diagnosed or have symptoms of ADHD may be unaware of recent
Although Dextroamphetamine is the only FDA approved medication treatment of ADHD in children under 6 years of age, inefficient evidence of safety and efficacy in this age group resulted in the AAP NOT recommending its use in this population.
Ritalin is currently prescribed to approximately six million people in the US. Of those six million, 75% of these are children, with boys receiving Ritalin about four times more often than girls. Ritalin is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system. It interacts with chemicals in the brain and nerves that give way to hyperactivity and impulse control. Not only is Ritalin used to treat ADD and ADHD, it is also used to treat a sleeping disorder called Narcolepsy, which is an uncontrollable desire to sleep, but there is another drug that given just as Ritalin, and it is called Adderall. Adderall is almost the exact same as Ritalin except it actually enters the cell and helps it produce more dopamine.
Ritalin also known as its generic name methylphenidate is a schedule II substance that is approved by the FDA to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Ritalin has been around since the 40s; and this drug was not always used to treat ADHD but for other disorders such as low mood. Kids who appear to have ADHD has been a huge concern for parents, friends, and teachers. Once the child shows signs of jitteriness they are brought to the doctor, and the doctor is real quick to determine that the child has ADHD and starts prescribing them stimulants such Ritalin.
To add to that, the research that has been conducted on the disorder has led to a variety of effective treatments. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) (2014) the most widely used medication is a stimulant. There is a wide variety of stimulants available for ADHD subjects. Although, with these stimulants come side effects including sleep problems, decreased appetite, anxiety and other diverse uncommon side effects (NIMH, 2014). Stimulants tend to calm children with ADHD. However, these medications can be detrimental to the patient in many ways. Certain medications have been subject to abuse, including Adderall and Ritalin. These medications are in some cases abused by patients who are over diagnosed. Since these patients do not have the disorder they can feel the side effects and use the drug to achieve a certain kind of high. When using these drugs for non-medical purposes they can seem to replicate the effects of cocaine
Essential Oils have been used for centuries for holistic healing to promote well being, spirituality and health. The three common ways to use oils are, ingesting, applying to skin and diffusing. When ingesting or applying oils to the skin you should dilute the oils first with a carrier oil. Some of these carrier oils are coconut oil, almond oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil. After you have diluted the oil you can then ingest and apply to the skin. There are many different benefits to using essential oils such as skin care, hair care, sickness, sleep issues, and stress issues. There are over ninety different oils and they each have different issues that they treat. When using oils you have to understand that it takes time to find the right
Essential oils have been used for centuries by people around the globe as healing agents. The oils have shown to be beneficial by decreasing many symptoms associated with dementia. They can help reduce stress and anxiety, aide in the symptoms of depression, and can also stimulate one’s senses. The oils can be administered in three ways
Essential oils are the oil of the plant from which they were extracted. They’re basically concentrated herbs! They contain all the goodness that protects and maintains the plant, and we can use them to help support our own bodies’ health and wellness.
Essential oils are a liquid substance that is extracted from fragrant plant material by steam distillation or mechanical extraction. When oils are produced with chemical solvents they are not pure and cannot be considered true essential oils. Oils are used to aid in the improvement of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Aromatherapy can be used alone or with other corresponding treatments such as massage, and acupuncture, as well as with standard modern treatments for symptom management. One of the uses of aromatherapy is to support and strengthen the self-healing processes. It does this by providing preventative measures and indirect stimulation of the immune system. “The field of aromatherapy activity is quite wide, ranging from the deep and penetrating therapeutic actions of essential oils to the extreme subtlety of fragrance on the psyche” (Hall, 2018). Some things you will want to remember when working with essential oils is that you only want to use pure oils, you will want to test first to alert yourself of your individual sensitivity levels and any
We all have known about the benefits we can get with aromatherapy. We know that it is a common relaxation technique in spa salons to make you feel relaxed and provide a soothing feeling. But did you know there is more to aromatherapy than just relaxation? Aromatherapy has always been an alternative approach to helping the body, mind and spirit through the use of essential oils and fragrances to create a pleasant atmosphere and stimulate the senses to lift away stress and fatigue.
But what are essential oils? These are liquids extracted from various parts of plants such as leaves, barks and roots. They are also used in aromatherapy. For proper use, they are mixed with carrier oils such as those made of coconut, olive or almond. The ratio should be 1 ounce of the carrier oil to 5 drops of the oil.
