Over the past few decades, livestock farming has gone through a dramatic transformation that has adapted to consumer wants and needs. Food production has shifted from small, family-owned farms to large agricultural farms. The larger farms often have corporate contracts, and meat and dairy products are produced with single species buildings or open air-pens. There are two different types of large farms: animal feeding operations (AFO) and concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO). A CAFO raises animals for the consumption of eggs, meat, and milk.
