Descartes’ exercise in extreme doubting can be linked to his desire for perception without deception. His first meditation references a large number of falsehoods he had accepted as a child. These falsehoods could be the gap between understanding and accepting. While he may have accepted the fundamentals of our world, there was never a period where he could truly understand why some things are how they are. He then proceeds to state that for many years he wanted to “demolish everything” and learn how to interpret his own interactions with the world.
