Keila Peralta Cepeda Christopher Aliano United States History 04 September 2017 Atomic bomb Keeping the secret of how to build a nuclear weapon and developing and testing that weapon so our enemies would not discover was a huge task. But the United States was successful and dropped two bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The dropping of the atomic bomb cause Japan to surrender and needed the Second World War. Japan was forced to both alter and weaken its territory. And adopt a western constitution. The United Nations was also then formed to promote international cooperation. It was a replacement for the League of Nations, which was ineffective. The dropping of the bomb had a devastating effect to the Japanese economy. As both Hiroshima and
The Manhattan Project was the American program for researching and developing the first atomic bombs. The weapons produced were based solely upon the principles of nuclear fission of uranium 235 and plutonium 239, The project as a whole cost approximately 2 billion dollars of taxpayer’s money and employed over 120,000 people . It was a massive undertaking to say the least. A project of this size needed justification and it seemingly came in the form of attacking the Japanese . The President's chief of staff Admiral Leahy The democrats would have suffered a political death blow if they were not able to justify the investment.
As World War II was coming to an end during 1945, the creation of one of the most destructive weapons known to humanity occurred within the United States. This weapon, known as “the atomic bomb,” was used on the two Japanese cities: Hiroshima and Nagasaki, resulting in a death toll unprecedented by any military weapon used before and an immediate, unconditional surrender. Some historians believe President Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb in order to intimidate the Soviet Union whereas others believe it was a strictly military measure designed to force Japan’s unconditional surrender. In the Report of a Scientific Panel of nuclear physicists, some scientific colleagues believed the atomic bomb was a “purely technical
2 massive atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. America hoped for mass destruction and death, which is the exact result given. Only 5 days after, Japan gave in and brought World War II to an end (Hall, 2003). America reached victory, and no one would ever doubt or underestimate the United States ever again.
In a political manner, the use of the atomic bomb put an end to the Japanese military dictatorship and put in place a constitutional monarchy, similar to the United Kingdom's. Even though they still have an emperor, the power rests in the hands of politicians. This helped stop the spread of communism here.
The release of two atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945 helped end World War II. However, it had unintended consequences. It caused the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union.
With the closing of the Second World War at hand, Harry S. Truman represented the United States in Potsdam Germany to decide the fate of a post war world. The key individuals in the conference consisted of the allied leaders, Soviet Premier Stalin, Prime Minister Churchill, and Truman. Dubbed the “big Three” in the second conference of the post war, they were charged with the daunting task of dealing with Japan and their continued effort in the ending war. The Potsdam Declaration was devised. It simply stated that Japan must immediately agree to an unconditional surrender or face total destruction. Japan would ignore this declaration (Scoenberger, 1969).
The dropping of the atomic bomb was the first of many nuclear projects. The first project was called the Manhattan project. Three bombs were created, one was a test, and the two others were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, cities in Japan. These bombs created mass destruction for the two cities; buildings were obliterated, fires erupted, and radiation spread for miles. After foreign countries saw what the United States was capable of, countries all around the world started to develop their own nuclear weapons, creating a surplus of weapons of mass destruction. “Today, eight countries in the world have nuclear arsenals (weapon supplies). The United States and Russia (formerly part of the Soviet Union) have most of the world’s nuclear weapons. Other countries with nuclear arms include China, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom” (Kroenig). Following World War Two, the Soviet Union and the United States were leaders of nuclear weapons. This period was called the Cold War. Forty-five years of potential nuclear destruction loomed over the Soviets and Americans. It wasn’t until after the Cold War that diplomats created the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. The Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, or NPT for short, recognizes the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom as nuclear weapon states. Nearly every country in the world is a member of the treaty, even if they do not possess nuclear weapons, by law they state that they are a nonnuclear
With the A-Bomb they were able to force a cruel empire to unconditionally surrender. According to Document 5 it talks about how the production of the Atomic Bomb was also being searched for by the enemy and luckily the Americans had gotten to it first. They were able to use it on the people who attacked Pearl Harbor without warning, those who treated prisoners of war with little sympathy and pity, and those who caused international war crimes. The Americans were able to stop the war with the Atomic Bombing and put an end to the empire which had done unjustly acts upon the war. These acts that were caused by the Japanese were also prevented from happening even further upon into the war. The Japanese would also do Island Hopping which they would specifically attack enemy islands and take over them to create a Pacific Empire. The Americans had also stopped this by using the Atomic Bomb to make them surrender. If the Americans have not created the Atomic Bomb it would have been possible for Japan to continue Island
1. Long after World War II and the use of the atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a great debate remains. It seems that there are two main potential arguments as to why the bombs were detonated and whether or not they were even necessary to begin with. The first theory surrounds the notion of the national security interests of the United States. In this theory essentially, Truman’s actions had been defended and justified as necessary in order to quickly end the war with U.S. causalities kept to a minimum.
Politically, the United States government did almost everything it could have done to make the world and the country a better place after World War Two. In order to prevent wars and make the world a safer place, the country wanted to establish an international organization that would help achieve this goal, similar to the Wilson’s proposed League of Nations, except this time, the organization had full support and funding of the United States. The organization was formed in 1945, and it was called the United Nations. Not only did the United Nations
The Economic Effect on Japan during Post World War II Japan’s economy was greatly affected by the atomic bombs dropped on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan’s economic recovery as a result of this incident transformed Japan’s economic growth which has become known as the “Economic Miracle.” The bombs caused Japan to reconstruct many more facilities in which the economy moved forward. The Economic Planning Agency, which used to be known as the Economic Stabilization Board, helped Japan to become one of the leading economic nations. The United States also contributed to much of Japan’s recovery by occuping it from 1945-1951.
First, the bombs had a huge effect on the Japanese people, the countries that surrounded Japan such as Korea, and World War Two as a whole. The two bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Little Boy and Fat Man, killed at least 129,000 people in total. It ended up causing other issues, such as child birth defects and a boost in illness. In the year following the bombs dropped, 1946, there were an astounding 1900 deaths from cancer. This is said to come from the bombs radiation fallout. One good result that came from all the tragedy of the war, is that Japan ended up surrendering to the Allies. This was around the same time that Germany surrendered, so the allies took the win.
Although dropping the Atomic Bomb was detrimental to a group of Japanese citizens, it saved many American lives and ultimately ended the war. If the American Army tried to make a land attack against the Japanese they would have lost many American lives, and possibly many more Japanese lives. And there would have been a possibility of many more years of fighting. Also the Japanese were given fair warning, on July 26 the Japanese were given the chance to surrender known as the Potsdam Declaration. Even though many people see the dropping of the Atomic bomb as a good thing, many people were against it because it cost many civilians their lives.
was fully justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, because of the unprovoked and brutal attacks on civilians, grounded airplanes, and the docked U.S. Pacific fleet by the Japanese. By retaliating with the atomic bomb to end the war the United States showed the world the power and weapons of mass destruction that it possessed and that it was not afraid to use them. This also issued a warning to the Soviet Union, who at the time was our ally, but was slowly turning into an enemy. In addition to showing the world the United States power, the atomic bombs crushed Japan not just physically, but also morally giving them no other option, but to surrender. Japan was on the edge of surrender with a great amount of inner turmoil, but Japans military leaders had declared no surrender and ordered their people to fight to the death of the last man, woman, and child, so in using the atomic bomb we forced them to the breaking point and saved millions of lives. Without the dropping of the atomic bombs the U.S. would have invaded the Japanese homeland in Operation Downfall where a great slaughter would have ensued. Nearly 500,000 Purple Heart medals were pre-made in anticipation of the invasion, but the atomic bombs saved this massive loss of life. The results brought about by the atomic bombs were very devastating and gruesome; they caused thousands of deaths and injuries and should not be employed except in the most dire
we did not ever tell them that we had an atomic bomb. (“The Decision to Drop the Bomb”)
