What Patriotism Means To Me Essay

Being a Patriot is something that a person is not born with, but is an option that we all can write in our present and even our future. Throughout the many years that I’ve attended Miramar High School, the definition of being a Patriot never came with a list classifications that discriminated anyone from being admired, honored, and even receiving the label of being a role model to many. Regardless of the admiration that a Patriot receives, a true Patriot doesn’t wallow in their admiration, but uses it to encourage their character to become a positive influence and fight for the righteous way. While reminiscing about the many people who I claim to be Patriots, I’ll have to state that the two main character traits to be a Patriot would have to be responsibility and tolerance.

Many people believe that they are patriotic people. But, what truly makes one patriotic? In “Saying Goodbye to Patriotism” Robert Jensen critiques the effects of patriotism on today’s modern society, the United States, and globalization after the attacks on 9/11. Jensen defines patriotism in his talk delivered to the Peace Action National Congress as “love and loyal or zealous support of one’s own country.” (Jensen 741) But, that is not the only definition of patriotism. One may love living in the United States so does that make them patriotic? Patriotism is probably one of the hardest words to define in today’s society.

In the Webster dictionary the definition for patriotism is: “one who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests.” An example of it in a sentence is, “He was a great patriot who devoted his life to serving his country.” My definition of a person who is patriotic is, “a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.

Original I thought the word Patriot meant the football time, and little about the military. I didn't know it meant for the love and devotion of one's country. The way today's assignment changed my view on it. Was how far is someone willing to go to continuously show their love and appreciation to their country. That when showing there love to their country by sewing a flag into her shirt is one thing, but to willing full get beat so others can say the pledge. Is very eye opening to show how great it is to be an America. We have it good despite what many of us think. Honestly if America was crap then why would there be so many people risking their lives to get here. What I’m basically saying here is that the word Patriot , and the passage.

Patriotism is an important aspect of any country, without moral for your country it will fall apart when an outside group attacks. This means that the patriots might need to bleed to keep the important values and aspects from being destroyed by tyrants. We have a gift as Americans called freedom, we have freedom of speech, freedom to choose what we want to do in our lives, and the freedom to choose the president. There are limits on these freedoms and there are laws that we have to follow, but we are still free.

Themes Present in Salisbury’s Eyes of the Emperor Theme (noun): The subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person’s thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic. In every novel, a theme is developed which makes the book lively and entertaining. Eddy Okubo shows patriotism by helping out the United States Army even though he is of Japanese origin. Additionally, courage and honor is pointed out in Eyes of the Emperor because Eddy has a lot of courage to join the army only 16! Particularly in this book the theme focuses on prejudice, a lot; many leaders did not value the Japanese American soldiers equally by making them do worthless work like digging ditches or not giving them respect.

Every Fourth of July we get to celebrate our country’s independence and various of us bring out our patriotism on this special day. For most people it consists of gathering around and making a barbecue whilst enjoying the freedom that our founding fathers fought for. Although nowadays the endeavor of denotation for patriotism with the evolving world and decisions in our government that we do not yet understand, but as a country we need to ensemble. As long as we stand together as a government by the people and for the people we can get through anything. Patriotism isn’t just about a single holiday it means that you’re reasonable with football players kneeling during the national anthem because soldiers fought for their right to do so. Patriotism is often defined as an allegiance, dedication, and loyalty to it's own country and it is relevant in the American society. Because of patriotism, it signifies pride for being an American. The society reveals their pride by joining different branches of the military, having U.S. flags pendenting outside of their yard, and understanding the true meaning of the American flag colors. Like as red, the red stripes signify the blood from all the wars that the United States have been involved with, the white stripes signifies purity and innocence, and the blue section with the stars signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Obama also mentions how that rights come with responsibilities to follow, and that the aforementioned freedoms cannot be achieved without following said responsibilities. What is the moral worth of patriotism? Is there a substantive difference between the patriotism of totalitarian and liberal countries? Do the soldiers in those countries experience patriotism differently? In this paper, I will attempt to affirm the moral worth of patriotism, find the exact differences between totalitarian and liberal patriotism, and determine how this difference might manifest itself within the citizens of either country.
