White Privilege Vs White Race

Inequality has two components in respect to power, privilege and social status: political imbalance at a social level and prejudice on the individual level. Race superiority in regards to “white privilege” by its very nature is a flawed premise! There is no white race; we are all a mixture of our ancestors DNA; by some estimates ninety or more percent of us are technically mixed race. In my own family of origin we have identified our origins to include, but not limited to: American Indian, Irish, Scottish, Brazilian, Welsh, German, Scandinavian and Dutch. I was not raised with the idea or label that my skin was “white” , in fact I was taught that white was the color of a crayon, the color of paint on the walls, it is the color of an …show more content…

My parents prefer that I check other on legal documents as a statement against the social injustices brought about by society due to the identifier of skin color (perhaps, there should be a box that reads, “Heinz 57”). The values I have been taught at an individual level are a springboard to changing the world. From my perspective, I am only left to either evaluate behaviors of the individual or a society. Perhaps, my perspective has caused me to only see injustices brought about by individual and group behaviors, not skin color. What we might try, is to stop fueling the ideology of white privilege. If future generations (me included) raise our children with an attitude of equality based on behaviors conducive to a society it would become part of the consciousness of our society. It’s important to remember that privilege – even white privilege- is relative. What we’re fueling by focusing on the negative – is the negative.
