The piece of work that I have chosen to place in my portfolio is a long essay that I wrote my junior year for Ms. Stillwell’s AP U.S. History class. The assignment was timed, I was given thirty-five minutes to complete it. The goal of the assignment was to evaluate the impact of the Declaration of Independence and to analyze how it marked a turning point in American history. This was to be answered in the form of an essay. This type of essay tests a skill known as periodization, which focuses on analyzing how time periods are distinguished and the turning points that separate them.
The reason I chose this piece of work is that I believe that many of my strongest academic skills are presented in it. I completely and accurately answer the given
The Progressive era was a massive turning point in America’s history. The suffrage movement, Scopes Monkey Trial, and prohibition all had a large impact on America. Each event had a unique effect on the future and we still see the effects of these events today.
Throughout documented United States history, immense changes in social, political, and economic establishments have been brought about by perplexing people or conditions. Often, these changes mark a turning point in the progress of civilization as new ideas are formed, new governments raised, or new discoveries put to use in the interest of progress. Whether these pivotal moments in history may be triggered due to a single nonconforming individual or a vast, radical multitude, each turning point has explicit influences and outcomes which shaped America for years to follow. Every important decision has two key dimensions. The first is the outcome in the immediate case, and the second is as
American history has had many defining moments over the last five decades which has helped America to develop to the way it is today. Each decade holding many life changing events and discoveries in them it would take a long time to cover each and every one of these so I have chosen a major event that I find to be of great worth to Americans today. We can all learn from the past events and work together to make American a safer and better place to live, and one way to do so is by learning from the past. Starting in the 1950’s we will discuss the most life changing and breath taking moments from each decade that this great county has seen through the 90’s and discover why they are all of significant value to the America we all live in
There are many events that occurred that became the foundation of present day America. The five most important historical events that occurred during American History were: the Renaissance; the European Reformation; the life of George Washington; concept of Manifest Destiny; and racism. These events each had a significant impact that formed the concepts that are used throughout America today; and, if they never happened or happened differently society would have been greatly affected.
The Cherokee nation, located in North Carolina before their removal, now locate it in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. A great city of great and wonderful people. The trail of tears, which means the place where they cried, does not only describe the removal of the Cherokees from their land, but it also describes the death of so many of them and the loss of their traditional and gorgeous houses. Nowadays, Cherokee descent had created a play that describe what happened to their removal of North Carolina across the Mississippi river to Oklahoma. Even though, they try to describe all the drama, the sadness, tears and blood that was shed, they will never be able to revive what happened because the trails where they had to walk are green with so much flowers that have blossomed and are hiding all the terror that the Cherokees had to live. There had been removals of Native Americans before the Cherokees in the United States. In other parts of North America also have existed the removal of citizens for example, the expulsion of the French Acadian from Nova Scotia by the British. This types of events have affected the world, the United States and the Cherokees.
The French and Indian war marked a turning point in American relation with Great Britain. Although mostly negative, this war also brought in a stronger ally ship with Great Britain who at the time was very powerful. This war helped America understand that Britain was very powerful and that if anything went wrong they would be even stronger if they worked together as allies. The French and Indian war led to the elimination of the French property in America, which was a major turning point. This war also led the British to start taxing more heavily on the colonists. Before the war, there was a period of neglect in Britain. Britain wasn’t really involved in the colonies affair. After the war, Britain was left in a major debt. Now all they had
The American Revolution was a major turning point in American history and greatly affected America's future. The American Revolution was the political upheaval during the last half of the 18th century in which thirteen colonies in North America joined together to break free from the British Empire, to become the United States of America. It fundamentally changed the American society politically, socially and economically by the establishments of the Declaration of Independence and conflicts over stronger states rights or stronger central government, paper currency, women's rights and slavery.
Why are the following events so important to America’s history? The events that include Brown V. Board of education, Emmet Till, Little Rock Nine, Freedom Summer, Chicago in the 1950’s, were all very important events to occur before a movement that was not necessarily alive, yet. These events were all important because of how they would start the momentum of the Civil Rights movement that would give African Americans the simple rights that any white man has. These events shared things in common such as the simple fact that they all involved African Americans pressing for rights that they deserved. All of these events whether they be positive or negative would be beneficial to the Civil Rights movement.
Even though it did not completely end discrimination in America, the history surrounding World War II and the Civil Rights Movement was one of our nation’s most defining eras. The equality of the country had never been focused on more than it was during this time. Segregation laws, also known as Jim Crow laws, were eradicated as a result, thus ending a long shameful period in US history. Or, at least starting its decline. Religious and ethnic intolerance shifted to more tolerance among Americans during and after the second world war when soldiers learned to get along to achieve the common goal of ending the reign of terror spread by the evil
April 25, 1846... that is the date when it all started. The Mexican and American war was one of the biggest wars in history. It took place in many different places and lasted three years. The U.S call the war, “The Mexican War” and in Mexico they call it, “ The US Invasion.” This war had many events happen during the three years, for example, Manifest Destiny, Retaliation for attack on Taylor and Land economic Benefits. The war was a large turning point in history, but was it justified?
My time in ENC1101 has been beneficial in many ways. Since the beginning of high school I dreaded writing all types of essay in English. So coming into this class I was not too fond of idea writing six thousand words within four short months. My inability to put my thoughts into creative and well worded sentence is the biggest obstacle I face when it comes to writing. I came into this class hoping it would improve my writing skills, which it did. Shortly after attending this class for a few days, the professor introduced the concept of a portfolio draft. My initial reaction was “wow, this is going to be a lot of work,” however, I realized that this would only benefit my grade due to the multiple edits my paper would go through. The portfolio reveals the amount of progress I have made throughout the semester with my writing. This portfolio really highlights on my ability to take criticism of others into account when it comes to editing my professional and portfolio draft.
When I first read the course description and then the syllabus, I knew the IDS 101 Cornerstone Seminar class was going to be challenging, difficult, time-consuming and rewarding. The skills of critical thinking, research, and writing were foundational for preparing me for success in future course work, my career, and life. Over the last eight weeks and after more than one hundred hours, I have improved my knowledge and understanding of developing analytical essays, research papers, and reflective essays. I have included the following works in my digital portfolio:
Joey Pandy U.S History 1/11/15 Period 6 Major events that shaped America Over the course of The United States of America, many events have shaped the country both for bad and good. Another such event is the Roaring Twenties. The final event that shaped America was The Great Depression. These are only a few of the many events that can be attributed to be an event that shaped The United States.
Slavery was a major turning point of American history, and is a greatly debated topic. In the Civil War it is seen as the cause or whether it was just a part of it. The Civil War’s act with slavery was just another issue not the cause. The act of slavery in south was the cause of the great civil war , however due to it was a planned much later on to emancipate slavery as a military tactic by Abraham Lincoln, Horace Greeley urged President Lincoln in 1862 to transform the war into an abolitionist crusade , and Lincoln would have supported slavery if the southern states had ended their secession. Showing the effort put into fighting for African American freedom.
In this portfolio I have included three essays, my personal belief of my worst, my most improved and then my best. My hardest essay to write would have been the more personal one. I decided to write my first essay on American Sign Language (ASL). I believe this to be one of my weakest essays due to not have writing many personal ones. Usually when people think of essays they think of book reports or
