Why Critical Thinking Is Important

Critical thinking is a learned skill vital to making clinical decisions. According to Arnold and Boggs (2016), critical thinking is “the purposeful use of a specific cognitive framework to identify and analyze problems” (p. 45). It is the ability to reflect on one’s own thinking and improve his or her problem solving skills. In the nursing profession, ethical dilemmas often occur, but with critical thinking nurses can resolve their moral distress.

Critical thinking requires gathering facts, using reason and extrapolating data from known facts to creatively determine solutions to resolve arguments or solve issues.

A) I would like to think that I am a fair-minded person and do not make judgments based on prejudices and other negative factors. However, I do have to admit that I do at times come to conclusions about people and situations quickly without thinking. Many times I will allow my mood dictate how I think throughout the day. If I am tired and overwhelmed, I will react to a problem negatively without stepping back and thinking the dilemma through. More often than not, when I respond this way I always end up regretting it and unfortunately have hurt other people's feelings. Critical thinking is a common phrase in the modern world. This concept can now be heard floating around in all aspects of our culture, from schools, to businesses, and even to scientific studies. It is understood by many, but when asked to define such a term various interpretations may be heard. This ideal means something slightly different to every individual.

Imagine you’re driving home from a long and trying day at the office, when all of a sudden a car comes zooming into your lane, nearly sending you crashing off the road. Natural instinct might cause you to honk your horn, shout out a series of profanities, or even chase the vehicle down to directly give the driver a piece of your mind.

Critical thinking is meaningful and beneficial in many ways. It is not about the criticizing, instead, it is the thinking about the thinking process. It reflects our own thoughts and perceptions towards certain situation. In my personal experience, by practicing thinking critically, gives me the chance to build up my skills on thinking objectively, and non-judgmentally. It also reminds me of analyzing the situation from different perspectives. And this helps me to be more empathetic about client’s struggles. I have learned not to draw conclusion too fast before I fully assess the situation. As a nurse, we are expecting to use critical thinking with caring for our patients. Critical thinking is a skill that is first acquired from the nursing school from our professors who are expected to be a good critical thinker. Understanding and using critical thinking is very important. Critical thinking is not something that is taught as we grow up at home, it is a personal skill that we have automatically.

Critical thinking is when a person analyzes and evaluates a situation before forming an opinion. Ask questions, assess the facts and issues, and then assert a concluding opinion before taking something at face value. Someone may have had a negative experience somewhere and then they passed their experience on. Doing so will most likely cause a lot of people to steer away from that place, to avoid a negative experience.
