Why We Should Not Have Guns On College Campuses

Imagine going into fight or flight mode because a gun is present during a classroom debate. An educational environment such as a college campus is a place of freedom where a person's intellectual mind should run wild. Because of this guns should not be allowed on college campuses for three reasons; firstly guns pose more of a risk to students and faculty, secondly the obliterate the friendly processes of learning environments and, lastly arrogant college students simply aren’t responsible enough to handle them. Undoubtedly having guns on college campuses increases the risk of potential shootings.
Javier Auyero states in his article that he dreads the possibility of having young vigilantes within his classroom (1). By allowing the “ campus carry “ laws to pass, the presence of guns will become germane. This allows for no definite way to distinguish between a mass shooter and a regular Joe. carrying a gun for protection. Even Art Acevedo, chief of the Austin Police Department disagrees with SB 11 (Campus carry Laws) he simply states that having concealed weapons on campuses with create a “less safe” environment (Auyero 1). Educational arguments are an essential part of any classroom. With a any amount of guns present in a classroom, no human being in his or her right mind would question a fellow students judgement because of fear.
