Women and the Draft
Men have always been looked upon as the leading sex. Looking back through history women have been the ones who take care of the home and children, while men are the ones who work and go to war. However in recent years there’s no doubt that women have become much more equal in the work force. Nevertheless men are still the ones who are forced to fight our wars when the time calls for it. Many think that women should be entirely equal to men having their choice to be drafted taken away but the fact is that they are physically at a disadvantage, too emotionally oriented, and the increase of female presence would have a more negative impact in the military in the way of social interactions. In the military physical

Without a choice women cannot excel to be above average and exceed their natural capabilities. Another thing that should prevent women to be in the draft is emotion. Women are complex beings with many chemical emotions causing them to react differently than men. Women’s brains perceive things in a more maternal way there for they consider circumstances differently. If a situation was complicated and needed an immediate reaction a woman might not be the right person to make an instant and thought out decision. She might reflect on it in a way that didn’t conjure what the troop needed at the moment. Women that are forced to be in war can easily get overwhelmed. Men can come through due to instinct after hundreds of years of being the ones who take care of the physical and difficult tasks at hand but women might not be as likely to react logically and can be easily inundated by the stress. Having maternal instinct rather than survival technique can be a vast disadvantage in combat causing emotion to be a handicap. An additional item that can cause a shortcoming in the military is social interaction with women and men. In our society today women are progressively moving up the ladder in all aspects of our country and this is a recent change. Most are used to seeing women be the ‘stay at home mom’ and men being the ones who work
The unpredictable nature of combat can cause major stress on the members of our military. This makes it almost impossible to make quick and well educated decisions. While men might have a lot on their mind, women will have hygiene and infections to add to her worries. The stress one deals with has a major effect on health and how we interact with others. Team work is huge in war.
Men always believed that women cannot do everything like a guy or what men can do because they think women are not as strong as them, or they are too emotional. They want women to stay home cook, clean and take care of the kids. Until today there are some countries still believe that women have no rights to work or do anything. Now women are starting to fight for their rights and to show men that women can do anything men can. Strong women are empowered and role models to young women. One of the biggest inequalities women face is the different physical standards for being allowed into a Military Occupation Specialty (MOS). Now women are able to be part in the military maybe not up to a level where men can reach, but we have taken the first step of women being able to join the military and being able to fight for their country just as
Women serving in the military is a topic that most people have very strong convictions on. Rather you are for or against women serving, you can find strong opinions that support both sides in this contentious dispute. Women have struggled to fit into the military life for years. Even though woman have fought alongside men in each key battle from the start of the American Revolution, they still find it hard to shake the stereo types about woman who serve. Woman have always had to cloak themselves in a masquerade of sorts to serve alongside men. When woman were finally accepted into the military, they were given secondary roles to the men. The Pentagon has just recently began to realize that gender really do not matter on the battlefield. Since the Pentagons enlightenment, one can now see progress in the integration of women in all expanding military careers. Women have always proven that they are not only an asset to the military but they are the strength of the America’s military.
In Molly M. Ginty’s article “Military Women: All Guts, No Glory” she explores the issue of women who serve in the army and them being included in combat with males, and the inequality they have been through serving in the U.S Armed Forces over numerous years. With new legislating, and there being new roles for females there is always going to be the debate if women should be in combat with men or not. For years’ women who would join the army were just nurses and secretaries, because of people thinking that they are not fit to be in battle. Even though they all go through the same training, the women were put in position to practically serve those who were in battle which were the men. So personally I do agree with women being able to serve
Currently, all male U.S. citizens and immigrants that are 18 - 26 years of age, whether documented or undocumented, who live in the United States are required to register with the Selective Service System. On June 15th, 2016, the U.S. Senate passed a new defense authorization bill. With this bill the women's draft was passed. This means as of January 1st, 2018, women from the ages 18 - 26 will be required to sign up with Selective Service for the draft. In 1981, the Supreme Court ruled that women could not hold combat positions and would not be required to sign up for the draft; this bill changed that. There has been a lot of debate about the passing of this bill. People, who threatened to target senators who voted for the defense authorization bill, reacted with anger because they do not want to see their little girls be shipped off to war. Others say it is only fair that
Through the deaths and the injuries, through the explosions and gunfire, through the heartache and brokenness, women have been serving in the military one way or another. Since the beginning of time, women have been fighting for their rights. They fought for their right to work, they fought for their right to vote, and they fought for their right to be in the military. Beginning in the Revolutionary War, women were allowed to join the military as nurses and support staff. Since then, they have gradually been able to do more tasks and jobs that the men do. Today, the conflict is whether or not women should be allowed to fight in military combat. The argument is controversial, and will more than likely be a never-ending debate.
In a time of war, you need all hands-on deck and by not allowing women to be subject to draft you are cutting the numbers in half. Now I am not saying rip every mother from her child and put them on the front lines however there are plenty of jobs in the forces that women are capable of doing if the time came. Truck drivers, medics, technicians and many more positions are suitable for women that do not involve putting them all in the center of the battle. We are one of the few countries that do not draft women because of
One reason why I believe women should be drafted is because equality. One in five new military recruits are women, men are still singled out and are required to register with the Selective Service for a possible future draft. Women and men have served on combat
Historically, military service and fighting in combat have only been available to men, but recently there has been debate about women serving in military combat. In times of war in the United States, men have generally fought as soldiers while women in the
A draft is compulsory recruitment for military service. The draft was meant for young men only but, since women want the same right as men, the questions is should they register for draft? In my own opinion, I don’t think women should register for the draft. They shouldn’t because, they have to take care of the kids, they are not as strong as men physically and the enemy will target them the most.
However, if women were to be drafted by the military their would have to be many more standards to make the draft fair. Some of these standards would say no women that have had a baby in the past one year could accepted by the draft and any women that is pregnant could also not be accepted. Not only that but women under the age of 19 and over the age of 26 could not be accepted to make it fair will
In Conclusion, even though there are many cons in putting women in a draft that does not mean they shouldn't. Everything has a reason to it and everything happens for a
In order for all aspects of the military to become equal, ground combat roles need to include both males and females. Despite the physical differences and the fear of lower standards, it is crucial for women to be active in these positions. If the military opens up all positions to women, in addition to the 90% of positions already available, it will open up a plethora of opportunities for women during and after serving their duty. If
When it comes to combat assignments and the needs of the military, men take precedence over all other considerations, including career prospects of female service members. Female military members have been encouraged to pursue opportunities and career enhancement within the armed forces, which limit them only to the needs and good of the service due to women being not as “similarly situated” as their male counterparts when it comes to strength or aggressiveness, and are not able to handle combat situations.
Ninety percent of all military occupations in the military include all genders, but the top ten percent of roles are excluded to women. Women have already felt the misogyny with unequal pay and unfair treatment by men, now women have to face the discrimination for fighting for our country. Women should be able to serve in the front lines because it makes the military stronger as a whole with more diversity, women in other countries fight on the front lines and women have made significant contributions in the military so far.
