As Russia mobilised in support of Serbia, Germany invaded neutral Belgium and Luxembourg before moving towards France, leading the United Kingdom to declare war on Germany. After the German march on Paris was halted, what became known as the Western Front settled into a battle of attrition, with a trench line that would change little until 1917. Meanwhile, on the Eastern Front, the Russian army was successful against the Austro-Hungarians, but was stopped in its invasion of East Prussia by the Germans. In November 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers, opening fronts in the Caucasus, Mesopotamia and the Sinai. Italy joined the Allies in 1915 and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers in the same year, while Romania joined the Allies in 1916, followed by the United States in 1917. The Russian government collapsed in March 1917, and a subsequent revolution in November brought the Russians to terms with the Central Powers via the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, which constituted a massive German victory. The congress of Vienna had successfully created an atmosphere of peace that lasted for 100 years, however in the years leading up to 1915, rising tensions among European powers would create a “powder keg” that required only the slightest event to set off a world war. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand provided the spark need to destabilize Europe and send the nations of Europe into the first modern war, although conflict had been stirring for the past 50 years. In the end, systems of alliances, imperialism,
World War I is estimated to have killed to an extent of 10 million people (background essay) and costing up to 186 billion dollars. WWI began in 1914 and lasted until 1918 and regarded the European Empires. In 1914 Europe was embroiled in a catastrophic war for power, pride and land. During the 20th century, devastating events prevailed over the encouraging ones. Two World Wars appeared during the 1900s: World War I and World War II. Many countries lost soldiers over the course of both wars. During the First World War, America originally decided to remain neutral. American ships had to cease trading with Germany due to a naval blockade by Britain. This effect did not stop Woodrow Wilson from exchanging products with European countries. Wilson trading with Britain and France angered Germany and forced America into war. This war that America was forced into caused roughly 100,000 deaths, and World War II, alone, led to nearly 500,000 deaths. However, the citizens elected one president who beneficially changed American

During any war, there will alwaAys be alliances made which stick even after the war has been dissolved. Postwar foreign policy after wars such as World War I and World War II was complicated and both had their similarities and differences from each other. World War I (WWI) strengthened our international relations with many countries, It also deteriorated some relations as well and set the stage for America becoming a great power. World War II (WWII) had some of the same effects, solidating our bond with the Allies and breaking others, but also it had many differences.
There have been several wars within countries itself and across the world, but there has only been one World War I or what some people may call The First International War. This war had pitted the central powers of countries against each other causing alliances to form and having an unbelievable amount of manpower need to fight over the years of 1914 to 1918. Most people around my age do not know anything about this war due to the fact that it possibly has not been taught to them. However, the war consumed so many people in it because it was so violent. It damaged those who were involved because there was no sight of the end after the first few months it began. Also, not all of the world’s major powers joined right away. The United States
From piles of bodies in no man’s land to Jewish death camps, the level of violence found within World War I and World War II was extreme even for wartime standards. These experiences shaped generations to come through the memories passed on by those who lived through such atrocities. Both Ernst Junger and Art Spiegelman carry on these memories through the book Storm of Steel and graphic novel Maus. Their pieces both give glimpses into the lives of the past and the violence in which those individuals endured. Their portrayal of WWI and WWII parallels the respective authors’ understanding of the nature of each war’s violence, and their ownership to that memory. Furthermore, their emphasis on a particular portrayal of violence serves as a platform to compare WWI and WWII.
Mass culture by definition refers to the set of ideals and values that develop from a common exposure to the same media, news sources, music, and art (chegg). It conveys the idea that culture emerges spontaneously from the masses themselves, like popular art did before the 20th century. However, post WW1 American society had advancements in technology that aided certain ideals and values in spreading across the nation. And the term media culture gives reference to the current western capitalist society that emerged and developed from this 20th century time period under the influence of mass media. World War I, or the Great War, was one of the bloodiest wars of all time. It was a war sparked by militarism, alliance, imperialism, and
