Nearly everybody has thought about writing as a career or a hobby, and it’s simple when you really put the time into it because these skills, like creativity are easy improving skills. Most successful journalists have great creativity and writing skills, especially in the current age when journalists are actually writing award-winning novels, like John Sandford, my father’s favorite author and more famously Mark Twain.

In the actual sense of the word to be a writer would mean anyone who has ever written before. Although I do not believe that definition is a true representation of the word. A writer is much more than that. To me, a writer is someone who writes for fun. Which could also be done professionally if they have a passion for writing. This writing could be of any genre. It could range from research to fiction. Also, the end result does not need to be anything significant. To be a writer you do not need to have published works. Writing in a journal, in my mind, would qualify you to carry the persona of a writer. The writing does not necessarily need to be long either. It could be as simple as a three lined poem, or as complicated as a textbook or novel.

Linda Barry, a highly successful cartoonist and writer, certainly does not fit the description or general perception of a writer. There are some important key ideas that I learned that writing in the workplace requires more understanding and comprehension in order to convey thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. These statistics are focalised on specialist careers within the industry. However, creative and professional writers in the 21st century are obtaining more work through freelancing, while maintaining a part time job through embedded employment. Embedded employees are viewed as outside of the language and literature discipline and freelancers are recognised as unemployed, therefore displaying the statistics as underreported. Writing, it seems, is an essential part of life in our culture. It is prevalent throughout every stage of our lives. First appearing when we learn the skill in primary school, the responsibilities attached to some form of writing will not cease to continue through our high school years, our college years, and inevitably into our lives as working full functioning adults. Writing essays, research papers, emails, reports and reviews, writing even persists for most past retirement, only to ever end at the grave, and the final signing of ones will. While writing is nearly guaranteed to be an essential part in all of our lives, this does not mean that all writing performed by everyone is the same. Ones choice of profession has a major impact on the content of their future writing, both in the field and while earning the necessary degrees for entry into those fields.
