Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Nicholas Rowe

Differ like human faces.

Her dismal dumps, like doleful Dido.

Hid, as in a grave.

Honor … like power, disdains being questioned.

Our passions, like the seasons turn;
And now we laugh, and now we mourn.

Nature revives, like a dim winking lamp,
That flashes brightly with parting light,
And straight is dark forever.

Sullen as a storm.

Swift as the fleeting shades upon the golden corn.

Women, like summer storms, awhile are cloudy,
Burst out in thunder and impetuous show’rs;
But straight the sun of beauty dawns abroad,
And all the fair horizon is serene.
