Pedigree Guidelines:
Can an individual have it without either of their parents having it?
It can not be Autosomal dominant or Sex linked dominant
Does a female have it without her father having it?
It can not be sex linked recessive.
Do both parents have it, but not all children?
It can not be autosomal recessive and it can not be sex linked recessive
Does it appear evenly in both sexes?
It is unlikely to be sex linked recessive
Do only males have it? (with more than 5 males)
It is unlikely to be autosomal recessive
If every individual who has the trait has a parent who has the trait, the trait is dominant
Penetrance is 100%
Note that these rules are not always true in real life, but they make pedigree problems more straight
forward.
