Mr. Zeehnul Ishfaq is an assistant manager of investment department in LR Global
Bangladesh. Before joining LR global he used work under a small investment firm at an
entry level post. From the very beginning of his professional career, he has been
enthusiastic about developing different financial modeling's. Therefore, his expectation
of learning new modeling's from his first job was very high. First three month was going
very good for him as he was gaining corporate work experience, meeting different
personnel's and learning corporate traits and norms. From the very beginning he was
attentive to his job duty and was dedicated to the assigned tasks and the management
of the firm was very happy with Mr. Ishfaq.
But, after the first three month he started facing several complications on the workplace.
From the very beginning his salary was very little compared to other firms in the sector.
As, he was a fresher that time, he accepted the salary and joined the firm. He was
attentive to his duties, worked dedicatedly and the firm started getting more projects
than before. His job performance yielded positive result for the firm. As, he was paid low
he asked the management for a pay raise. He expected that the management will raise
his salary because of his on-job performance. But the management rejected his
appraisal proposal and made a counter offer. They proposed him to take over the senior
executive role with a slightly improved salary. But, with the position of senior executive,
his job responsibilities would expand, but his compensation still wouldn't rise to the
degree he anticipated. Which he believed would be insufficient for him to accept the
senior executive position with a slightly improved salary. As a result, he declined the
counter-offer. Mr. Ishfaq's offer would increase their projected spending which the
management were not willing to do despite positive outcome of his job performance.
Moreover, the firm used to pay its employees late. Ishfaq was irritated because of the
delayed payments. He was unable to pay bills and credit balances on time due to
delayed payment by the firm.
In the meantime, Mr. Ishfaq started perusing CFA for his career advancement. The
management used to assign him hefty tasks within a short time frame. As a result, he
was forced to work beyond working hours and sometimes on holidays too. He was not
happy with this excessive workload. As, there was excessive work pressure he was not
able to cope us with his study. Moreover, the assigned tasks were very monotonous for
Mr. Ishfaq. His expectation was that he will be able to learn different modeling
techniques but he found that the firm only relies on some specific model to serve their
customers. He grew exhausted and lifeless. He was lacking energy and passion for
performing same monotonous task every week. He was not feeling any sort of joy in
work. All these things made him inattentive to his duties and his job performance
dropped. He was not getting any kind of motivation for completing his tasks. He thought
he is being exploited by the management.
The management used to assign him to different groups for different tasks. In some
group, members were not as attentive to their job duties as Mr. Ishfaq. There used to be
conflict among Mr. Ishfaq and members of the group about meeting deadlines as he
was very keen to his assigned tasks. Their perception was not matching with Mr. Ishfaq.
Once, a member of group joked about his physical state. He felt sad and thought he is
getting bullied because of being too slim. He complained about the matter to group
coordinator but no action was taken by the coordinator in this regard. The coordinator
also said get on with it, it's just a joke. After this incident Mr. Ishfaq understood that the
working environment in the firm is not suitable for him. He realized that enough is
enough, he must look for a new job. Unfortunately, while seeking for a better paid job,
he ran into another dilemma. The recruiting firm's profile did not appeal to him as he
was seeking a multinational organization.
Thankfully, after a month of looking for better employment, he received a lucrative offer
from LR Global Bangladesh. LR Global Bangladesh is an Investment Management firm
that operates in Bangladesh as a subsidiary of LRG, a New York-based investment
management firm. As Mr. Ishfaq was not satisfied with his previous job, he began to
consider the benefits and drawbacks of entering a multinational investment corporation.
He discussed the new employment with his friends in same sector. He received great
feedback. He assumed that here job duties will be as intensive as previous job but the
overall working environment and job benefits will compensate for the excessive
workload.
Moreover, LR's consumer base is more diverse than the previous firm which will help
him to learn new modeling technique which he was lacking in previous one. Therefore,
he opted for taking the new job offer. He was fatigued and dissatisfied with the prior job.
He contacted his former human resources department regarding his intention to quit the
job. He was thrilled with the new employment proposal because it included a raise in
compensation, prompt payment, and amenities such as vacation time, lunch, and
transportation. He believed that new management valued him as a great resource to
their firm. He was looking forward to taking on the new adventure because it marked the
beginning of a fresh path after a lengthy and difficult trauma.
Mr. Ishfaq is currently content with his new role at the new firm. He is having the chance
to use his experience and expertise. He has to deal with all kinds of heavy workload at
times. But he's fine, he'd already agreed to cope up with the excessive workload before
coming here. Moreover, here none bullies him because of his physical state. The
co-workers are extremely cooperative and appreciative of him. He receives timely
compensation, which allows him to meet expenses on time, which was previously
inaccessible. He feels motivated to perform his job duties. This new position is like a
breath of fresh air in his formerly stagnant career. During this whole experience, he
realized that competitive compensation is essential for motivating employees.
Furthermore, the workplace environment, interaction with colleagues and bosses,
career development opportunities, organizational commitment, and subtle regulation are
all important variables in motivating employees in an organization.
