Step 1

Introduction:

These two reactions are examples of Electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. The mechanisms are slightly differ from each other. 

For the 1st case (B), one methyl group (-CH3) is present with respect to a -Br group. Therefore, the direction substitution with the isopropyl reagent is not possible due to steric hindrance and the +I effect of the methyl group. The substitution will occur through a benzyne intermediate, which is shown in the next step (Mechanism step). This type of substitution is named as cine substitution.

For the 2nd case, two nitro groups (-NO2) are present at the ortho and para position with respect to a chlorine group. The electron-withdrawing effect of the nitro group enhances the electrophilicity of the benzene ring. The chlorine-attaching carbon becomes highly electron deficient. The OH- attack at the deficient carbon atom. The detailed mechanism is given in the next step. This type of substitution is called as Ipso substitution.
