Question

Aspen peppers their conversation frequently with cuss words. This is fine when Aspen is with friends who also cuss, but not acceptable in classes. Aspen is able to communicate effectively using words but has not learned to discriminate the situations when the cuss words are not acceptable. Aspen’s teachers start using a system in which Aspen earns a checkmark for each 10 minutes that elapse without cuss words. The teachers use timers on their smart phones to keep track of the intervals, and collect data on clipboards that Aspen cannot see. If Aspen cusses, the teacher resets the interval for 10 minutes. As students transition to the next class, teachers enter the number of checkmarks earned at the end of a particular class period in a shared Google Doc. The last teacher of the day counts the number of checkmarks. A total of 30 checks is available (6 classes at 50 minutes each). Initially, if Aspen has 15 checkmarks they are allowed to make a choice from a menu of preferred activities. After three days of meeting the expectation for 15 checkmarks, Aspen has to earn 20 checkmarks for the opportunity to make a choice. Gradually the number of checkmarks is increased so that Aspen needs to earn all 30 checkmarks, and the menu items increase in magnitude. Aspen continues to cuss with her friends at lunch and during transitions (which is permissible) but never during classes.
