Standardized tests are unnecessary because they are excruciating to the minds of many innocent students. Each year, the tests get tougher and stricter until the students cannot process their own thoughts. The tests become torturous to the minds of those only starting in the world of tests. Despite with agreeing to Harvard’s’ proposed idea of lessening the importance of standardized tests, specifically tests like the SAT, I disagree with the idea of putting more emphasis on community service. I, personally, believe that the standardized tests are stressing students a bit too much; however, by lessening the importance of the standardized tests, I do not find it necessarily beneficial to fill the spot with community service. The Admission Department should focus on every aspect evenly whether it is on standardized tests, extracurricular activities, or community service.

The stress settled in once the word ‘testing’ echoed through the classroom. The students knew what it brought, and they knew how dreadful it would be; sitting in one room, hour after hour and day after day, silent and still, with only the sound of the clock resonating through their heads. Standardized tests are assessments that local and national governments may require their students to take. However, these tests do not properly evaluate their intellect, and only lead to tension and mental strain on a student’s attentiveness. The use of standardized examinations have long been debated in American society. In fact, the last several years have seen an immense shift from the prioritization of standardized testing to more holistic measurements of student achievement. Despite this shift, many school districts across the nation and college/university entrance requirements still place a significant, if not pivotal, emphasis on test-taking and standardized exam results. Throughout this paper, I will explore 1) the history of standardized testing, 2) arguments for and against its practice, as well as 3) situate the consequences of its use in one of the three philosophical goals of schooling. All of this will subsequently paint an investigation into the purpose of schooling in American society.

In classrooms all across America, students sit perched over their desks in the process of taking standardized tests. As the students take the tests, teachers pace nervously up and down the rows of their classroom, hoping and praying that their students can recall the information which they have presented. Some children sit relaxed at their desks, calmly filling in the bubbles and answering essay questions. These children are well prepared and equipped to handle their tests. Other children, however, sit hunched over their desks, pondering over questions, trying to guess an answer. They struggle to recall information that has been covered many times in class, but they can’t.

Today’s students are tested to an extent that is unparalleled in not only the history of our schools, but to the rest of the world as well. Opponents of standardized tests claim that taking these tests are rewards for shallow thinking. Taking these tests can sometimes be a little challenging because not all students are good test takers. Some students when taking a test get overwhelmed and over think when reading the questions on the tests. According to Harris et al., “Studies of students of different ages have found a statistical association between students with high scores on standardized tests and relatively shallow thinking” (3). Today, it can be observed that society has shifted education drastically from the time schools were constituted, to now. Throughout history, schools have gone from private, where only the elite can attend, to public schools where virtually anyone can attend. One of the factors that goes along with education is standardized testing. Frederick J. Kelly, father of the standardized test, once said, “These tests are too crude to be used, and should be abandoned.” Not only has this shift occurred within education itself, but it has occurred within the testing concepts found within standardized testing so much so that the founder of these tests has chosen to give up on it.

In “A Test Worth Teaching To,” Susan Headden describes her study of DC CAS tests and concludes that the tests are ineffective. Headden begins by narrating an experience of a teacher by the name Voskuil who is so good at what he does that he manages to turn around a nonperforming school. The teacher drills the students since they are to take the DC CAS tests in April. The teacher admits that he does not like this method of “teaching to the test” (Headden p2). Notably, Voskuil is not the only one who shares such sentiments about the American way of teaching. Many believe that this way of teaching degrades the whole learning experience. In the same vein, reformers who believe in the best educational standards are not happy with the current narrow-minded test preparations (Headden p4).

Although testing has been around for a long time, I instinctively believe that testing doesn’t give a clear picture of student’s achievement. Thus, I make strong connection to the following quote: “A central question has been whether accountability policies and standardized testing helping or harming those children the polices are most often designed to serve” (Skrla, p.11). For instance, when I analyzed and interpreted the TAPR of Richard J Wilson Elementary school, I found valuable information that all teachers should know at the beginning of every school year.
