Resolving Ethical Dilemmas: A Case Study

Working in the field of human services of the needy puts highly consideration for ethical standards to follow. Most of the needy cases give too much detailed concerning their situations; therefore, they are vulnerable. Ethical codes help therapists, psychologists and social workers to know what to do towards an ethical issue, and how to avoid unethical issues in the first place. The ethical standards for resolving ethical issues and for privacy and confidentiality are crucial ethics to follow in my current job.
Resolving ethical issues is very important in my workplace. According to Fisher (2013), the ethical standards for resolving ethical issues requires that the psychologist confirms the conflict, follows the Ethics Code and tries to correct the misuse or conflict. Psychologists treat vulnerable cases whose information should be confidential especially with the use of the internet as data can spread fast if there is no caution. Passwords, names, details, reports and all papers require locking in a safe place. For example, I wanted to use a photo of one of my clients to upload it online to a sponsorship organization, I had to blur and edit it so that it looks unknown. A psychologist can discuss the limits of confidentiality with a colleague or organization, family member, law enforcement, treatment centers and a third party; however, a consent form signed by the parent or guardian is a necessity. Recording is a violation to the ethical codes according to the HIPAA's privacy Rule. Another colleague had to resign for videotaping a case in the center I work in without getting a consent form from parents.
