Affordable Care Act Research Paper

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is considered to be one of the most radical health care moves in legislation after Medicare. The reason being that it will provide universal health coverage to everyone regardless of circumstance. An evaluation of ACA’s influence on health care will be evaluated in this paper.

Universal health care coverage is a dream that the majority of Americans have had for many decades. It seemed that the dream could become a reality with a major effort under the Clinton administration in the mid 1990’s. This effort was spearheaded by the First Lady, Hillary Clinton, and would have established a universal health care system for the entire nation. Unfortunately, after years of work, the effort ended in failure due to trying to modernize and finance universal health care at the same time (Rodwin, 2003). When the current President, Barack Obama, campaigned in 2008, one of his cornerstone promises was to develop a healthcare system that would assure affordable healthcare for all Americans through the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama Care. With only a slight majority of democrats in the Senate and a large majority of Republicans in the House, this would prove to be an uphill battle (Moore, 2014).

The affordable care act was signed into law by president Obama in the year 2010. The aim of the act is to ensure Americans get access to quality health care and at the same time, reform the health care system in order to manage costs. The act has different sections that explicitly explain how this aim would be realized.

The affordable care act also known as the health care law offers clear choices for consumers and provides new ways to hold insurance companies accountable.

The United States does not have a universal health insurance coverage available for its citizens, therefore, there are varied obtainable coverages. Some coverages are offered through employers while others may be obtained through government programs. It seems to attempt a focus on the lack of knowledge that people have about the affordable healthcare act. During the beginning of this era, reformers had the support of President Theodore Roosevelt who thoroughly believed “that no country could be strong whose people were sick and poor”. In 1915, a bill was proposed by the American Association of Labor Legislation (AALL) that limited coverage to working class individuals whose annual income was less than $1200 a year and included hospital services, sick pay, maternity benefits, and funeral expenses (Palmer, 1999). This system was believed to “relieve poverty caused by sickness” and would “yield a net savings for society” that would benefit not only citizens but businesses as well (Toland, 2014). Opinions on the AALL bill were mixed. The American Medical Association (AMA) was included in the formulation of the bill, leading them to create a committee whose entire aim was to assist the AALL but a disagreement over physician payment led the AMA to redact their support (Palmer, 1999). The American Federation of Labor continuously spoke against universal health care, fearing that it would result in complete state supervision over citizen’s health and would undermine current worker unions and the benefits they provided.
