America 's Immigration System Is Broken

Illegal immigration is the migration of people across national borders in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country. Some countries have millions of illegal immigrants. Immigration, including illegal immigration, is overwhelmingly upward, from a poorer to a richer country. The easy definition of an undocumented immigrant is someone who was not born in the United States and therefore has no legal right to be or remain in the United States. Not all undocumented immigrants snuck across the border illegally. Although it is hard to get an accurate number on the amount that did, some undocumented immigrants originally came here legally as tourists or some came on a temporary visa and just did not leave. The reasons on why they decided to stay and not go back to their countries are numerous. Some immigrants come to the United States to work and escape the poor economy in their country, while others come to be with their family. Whatever the reason may be, at the end of the day they all come here to achieve the american dream.

There has been lots of controversy on the issues concerning a solution to America’s broken immigration system. Democratic and republican parties can’t seem to agree with one another, leaving reform at a stand-still. Democrats are focused on giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship while Republicans are focused on border security. The fact is both of these approaches should work in unison with each other to provide the most efficient route in fixing immigration.

The issue of illegal immigration has daunted this nation for many years. Currently, there are 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. Immigration reform is necessary, but amnesty is not. Last year, the United States Senate passed the ‘Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act’ by a vote of 68-32. If this bill becomes law, America will still not have fixed it’s illegal immigration issue. It is a commonly known fact that many employers employ immigrants to save themselves a few dollars in the long run. A couple ways they do that is by paying undocumented immigrant’s lower wages with no healthcare benefit options. Is there a magic fix? Does everyone have the right to come here to America and become a citizen? As a nation, we have opened up our borders to allow people to enjoy the freedoms that we have. However, almost everyone would agree that America’s immigration system is broken; what they don’t agree on is how to make it right and fair for everyone. Broadly speaking, conservatives agree with tighter border security. There is even some talk about deporting illegal immigrants. Some would agree that the repeat criminals should be sent back to their homelands. In contrast to the liberals plan where they would like to see a path to allow for legalization and to become Americans. Of course, for them to become an American, they would have to pay fines, learn English, and follow the legal process to become a legal citizen of the United States (Smith, P. 2010).

As an old saying goes: “Everything is a two-edged sword!” although the U.S. has been benefits a lot form the upcoming immigrant, there are a lot of social and political problem associate with it. As politician often put when they made the speech: “current immigration system in the United States is broken.” There are several reasons why the immigration system in the U.S. needed to be reformed: families are separated, immigrant workers are exploited, people died when they try to across the border, and the discrimination against immigrants.

Immigrants, legal or not, can be deported at any time if the officer wants them to be deported based on if they have been convicted of any criminal offense, engaged in fraud or willfulness misrepresentation, or seem to be a risk to public safety or national security (Dr. Renee Scherlen, “Immigration, Refugees, and American Security”, Fact vs Fiction).

The United States immigration policy has never pleased all Americans and probably never will. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, politicians have toiled continuously with the broken system. For example, Congress attempted to strengthen the western border by passing the Illegal Immigrant Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act in 1996 ("Historical Overview"). Although the proposed increase in Border Patrol agents seemed promising, insufficient funding kept the act from adequate enforcement ("Historical Overview"). Now, President Obama is trying to fix the immigration policy. Last November, the president issued an executive order so that his immigration proposal would be passed. In his proposal, his main focus was removing people who pose a threat to our country, as well as continuing to dispose of illegal immigration along the southern border ("Immigration"). Even though a few of the President 's critical points may be effective, it simply is not enough to remedy what has been broken for so long. Changes need to be made to our country 's immigration policy in order for it to be effective.

Those who want to acquire a card through family an immediate family member must file form I-485 and to become a permanent citizen, the same member must file form I-30. Typically, these kinds of green cards get priority due to the government wanting to reunite families as quickly as possible. These green cards are used to prove that an individual is eligible to work, receive social security, and a driver 's license as well as being required to have your green card at your side at all times. One must petition for visa and wait patiently as the massive amounts of paperwork is worked out and reviewed. One can clearly see how non-native speakers and peoples get lost so easily in the broken immigration system.
