Understanding whom God is one of the hardest tasks to wrap our minds around because of how majesty God is and we will never be able to fully understand everything about God. However, God does allow his Word to tell us more about Him and more importantly the love we he has for us all. To understand how important who God is all one has to do is look at the articles of faith from the Church of the Nazarene. The very first article of faith explains the beliefs of the Triune God. Article 1 states, “We believe in one eternally existent, infinite God, Sovereign Creator and Sustainer of the universe; that He only is God, holy in nature, attributes, and purpose. The God who is holy love and light is Triune in essential being, revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” (Manual).
I believe in the first article of faith by the Church of the Nazarene, and including in the article of faith we see some attributes of God, which I feel is important to go into more detail so we can have a better understand of God. Dunning explains the essential nature of God is holy love and how we must take into account of the way the holiness of God informs the attempt to ascribe the attributes to God (Dunning 192). Its important to understands holiness is simply a background for all of God’s attributes. It is not a primary attribute of God and to recognize that holiness means “separateness.” This is significant as it affirms God characters as perfect and pure and full of love. His holiness will be shown
The question is asked what does it mean to claim that God is triune and how does this bear upon human life? Merriam-Webster (2018) defines triune as three in one, or relating to the Trinity, the triune God consisting of three parts, members or aspects (Webster 2018). To claim that God is triune would mean that there is a knowledge as well as a belief in the Trinity of God and that God is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is triune has a bearing on Human Life because God is Holy and He is the creator of the world and as humans he has a major effect on the come of each of our lives. But for the believer His ways becomes our ways, therefore it affects how we act, live, think, love, and how we treat others. As well as our character and the way in which we live our lives is affected for the better once we have come into the knowledge and acceptance of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The first four chapters of Genesis indicate that God is the eternal Creator the universe; that God communicates with His creation and evaluates his own work, and that God is sovereign, exercising “supreme authority and absolute power over all things” (Lecture 2, para. 5). There is but one true God, who exists as a Triune Being and is three Persons in one essence; a Divine essence which exists wholly, invisibly, simultaneously and eternally, within three members of the one Godhead—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Lecture 2, para. 7). Harmoniously linked, “each divine figure of the Trinity exercises dominion over creation and is involved in the biblical narrative in its own unique, yet cooperative, way” (Johnson, p. 178). The unity of the Trinity not only illustrates the full divinity of God, the immeasurable power, benevolence, wisdom and omnipresence distinctly setting Him apart from His creation, but also shows that He is the source of all that is good, true, beautiful, loving, just, and
Who is God? God is the creator of all according to the Christian worldview. As Christians we believe that God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Diffey, 2015, Ch. 3) We trust that God be existent in three persons. After reading the Genesis chapters, I understood that God
God the Son is revealed in the Christian Scriptures. God the Spirit is revealed in the Church. The Trinitarian doctrine states that there are three co-eternal, equal persons in God, which is the notion of unity within community. The Trinitarian doctrine was further developed and defined at the councils of Nicaea in 325 CE and Constantinople in 381 CE. God was always trinity, however gradually this reality became known through revelation. Jesus calls God and speaks of the spirit which indicates a plurality in God. The difficulty is reconciling the concept of monotheism with the notion of God existing as three persons. The divine essence is common to all three, however the three persons have attributes or properties which distinguished them eg Fatherhood, sonship and sanctifying power. Once essence means that the actions (creation, redemption, sanctification) are attributable to all. Mutual relations is the concept that the terms Father and Son are not titles but expressions of a relationship and thus all three persons are co-equal
"The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. " Abraham Lincoln, during his second inaugural address. Words that resonate, powerful and everlasting. Reasoning, that extends beyond all doubt.
Trinity is one God. Each of the persons of the trinity, Father, Son, and Spirit “is God whole and entire”. I believe that the trinity of persons consists of one substance and one essence. Each of the persons is that supreme reality, the divine substance, essence or nature. Each of the three persons are distinct from one another, but known to be related to one another.
This was the question that popped up in my head after reading the first chapter of The Orthodox Way, God as Mystery. More ironically, before they answered my question did they tell me that Jesus Christ is God and Holy Spirit is God as well. Usually multi-identities are not an issue for me or for anyone, but this time is a little, or a lot, different when it comes to God. In the chapter, God as Trinity, “The Christian God is not just a unit but a union, not just unity but a community… He is Trinity: three equal persons, each one dwelling in the other two by virtue of an unceasing movement of mutual love” said Ware (P. 27). Ono thing that needs to be confirmed first is that there is only One God, and God is the one essence embracing three persons. Secondly, in the case of Trinity a person is not just an individual, as opposed to that three human persons always “retain their own will and own energy no matter how closely they co-operate together” (P. 30). This indicates the property of “distinction but never separation” within the three persons; they are distinct as in differentiation and they are never separate because of the relationship formed by the shared one will and one energy. As a consequence, we surely have to turn to the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit if we want to know God holistically, especially the Oneness of God (Jones,
Are you a part of the Circle of Love? Well do you want to be? What an enticing offer you might say. Well that is the invitation that God extends to the whole world. You see this Circle of Love was in existence before all and all was created from it. God chose to create in order to incorporate into His love circle. How marvelous is that? Our very existence at its core is to join the circle. Timothy Keller describes it as “a dance” (Kings Cross) that was taking place long before anything was, and now we can join the dance. In the Comedy film Meet the Parents, a family has this concept of a Circle of Trust. As its foundation, there is a close relationship and each person trust the next person. The Circle of Trust only works if each person in it does their part to maintain a trusting relationship. In the Triune God we see a similar concept; we see the Circle of Love. Like the Circle of Trust, The Circle of Love is all about relationship. God models the perfect relationship within Himself and puts it on display for all of creation to see. When you look at the world and how everything is dependent on something and has to be in relationship to exist you begin to see a reflection of its creator. God created everything with the idea of relationship in mind and every relationship leads back to Him. It is this fundamental element of relationship that makes the Triune God different from any monotheistic
The doctrine of the Trinity is foundational to the Christian faith. It is crucial for properly understanding what God is like, how He relates to us and how we should relate to Him. The doctrine of the Trinity explains that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In other words, God exits one in essence but three in person. The Trinity does not divide God into three parts. These definitions express three crucial truths: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct Persons, but there is only one God. In other words, each person of the Trinity has their own “office,” and each person of the Trinitarian society is revealed through their relation to the other persons of the Trinity (Edwards, Works of Jonathan Edwards volume 21, 31). It must be said that the work of the Trinity is a work of all three persons in complete consent with each other. Therefore, when one mentions the work of one person of the Trinity it is the work of all three.
When we speak of the attributes of God we are referring to the qualities that composes God. They are the very characteristics of his nature, these attributes are qualities of the entire Godhead. One should not be confused with properties, which, technically speaking, are the distinctive characteristics of the various persons of the trinity. Properties are functions, activities, or acts of the individual members of the God head. These attributes are permanent attributes that cannot be gained or lost. Some earlier theologies thought of the attributes as somehow adhering to or being at least in some way be distinguishable from the being or essence. In many cases, this idea was based upon the Aristotelian concept as substance and attribute (Shedd 1971). Some other theologies have gone to the extreme opposite, denying that God has an essence. Here, the attributes are pictures as a sort of quality. They are thought of as fragmentary parts or segments of God. It is better to conceive the attributes of god as his nature, not as a collection of parts or something in addition to his essence (Charnock).
It is important to begin by stating that there are many different doctrinal views of the Trinity. However I believe that the doctrine of Trinity defines one God who is eternally existent as three distinct Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. “These definitions express three crucial truths: (1) The Father, Son, and
In the Christian faith triune God is very significant. “Christian” is Trinitarian, describing Jesus as the one whom the Father anoints (christos) with the Spirit so that the Spirit may anoint our own lives (16). Christians confess Jesus as the risen Lord of the universe, but is proclaimed to be inseparable from the one who sent him, the one Jesus knew intimately as “Abba,” or “dear Father.” The ultimate paradox of Christianity is Jesus. Having Jesus at its very center disclosed as the source, the meaning, and the definitive answer to all of human longings causes this ultimate paradox. Fatula goes on to discuss, that although Jesus is the triune God, many of the people would not identify this God as the living God we actually experience in our own daily lives.
To begin to understand God, one must first begin with a firm belief in God, as well as the Bible – from which we derive all authoritative knowledge of God. The next step is to examine the amazing attributes of God. Of all the numerous attributes, there are three that I feel are key to understanding God: His Holiness, Omnipotence, and Love.
Faith is a very complex subject on how it can be obtained and what can be done after it has been achieved. The treasures of having faith brings a person to be saved from any evil. In the last chapter of Mark, it explains “therefore true faith in Christ is a treasure beyond comparison which brings with it complete salvation and saves man from every evil” (Mark [16:16]). When faith is within the person it also brings them righteousness, which gives the ability to break the chains within the person (Luther pg 11 par 2). In Luther’s perspective, the Word of God contains wisdom, liberty, joy, and other morals, which faith alone can only obtain those moral traits. The term “work” Luther uses in his writings is mainly about a certain action people will do such as community service or volunteering. Faith is difficult to have since any type of services work cannot make a person to have faith. Luther claims that person is divided up in two parts, and any type of work of the outer part of the body has no effect in faith, but when a person is saved by faith, Luther suggest giving back by helping other people or do good causes.
The first fundamental claims of the Catholic intellectual tradition tackles and answers this question of what is our relationship with God. It mentions that all human beings exist in a relation to a triune God which is also known as the Trinity. This Trinity is known as one God in three
