They can also help service users understand what to expect in the way of support and behaviour from health and social care staff. An example of a code of practice is ‘The nursing and midwifery council code of professional conduct’. This code of practice explains that nurses and midwifes must gain the trust of the people they are caring for, these people must trust them with their health and wellbeing. To gain this trust they must: * Make the care of people their first concern, treating these people as individuals and respecting dignity * Work with others to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of those in their care, their families and carers, and the wider community * Provide a high standard of practice and care at all times * Be open and honest, act with integrity and uphold the reputation of their profession As a professional they must be personally accountable for actions and omissions in their practice and must always be able to justify their own decisions. They must act lawfully, whether these laws apply to their professional practice or personal life. Charters most organisations have charters that inform staff and anyone using the service about what they are to expect. The Care Quality Commission (www.cqc.org.uk), the body, on behalf of the government, that regulates the standards in health and social care settings will always use a relevant charter as a starting point when reviewing an organisation.
