BUSI 650 – Operations Management
January 18, 2015
Key Concept Explanation The concept of a “job shop” as a transformation system, refers to a process which has a somewhat jumbled flow, high flexibility, and outputs which are processed differently (Lyons, Vidamour, Jain, & Sutherland, 2013). One of the most important aspects of the job shop which must be understood relates to the definition presented above. Managing a job shop is difficult because of the numerous different routes that an output might take, the numerous different inputs which are required, and the differing operations and amounts of time (Meredith & Shafer, 2013). “[S]ince every output must be treated differently”, efficiently

1348).
Biblical Integration When considering the purpose of instituting the appropriate transformation system is to achieve the maximum “efficiency, effectiveness, volume, capacity, lead time, flexibility, and so on”, there are a few Bible verses which almost immediately spring to mind (Meredith & Shafer, 2013, p. 50). The appropriate transformation system seeks to improve the work of our hands, allowing us to “work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23, English Standard Version). The improved work of our hands will also allow our souls to be richly rewarded and allow our diligent hands to rule (Prov. 13:4, 12:24, ESV). Before making any decision, however, the manager should seek to commit his work to the Lord, so that his “plans will be established” (Prov. 16:3).
Application
Real-world businesses with customers which require product flexibility, in lower volumes, have the beginnings of a job shop production process (Choudhari, Adil, & Ananthakumar, 2012). Such a beginning is further evidenced when the job force is made up of highly skilled employees that are able to help create a wide array of products (Pederson, Dresdow, & Benson, 2013). The job shop process is also very widely used because of its many advantages, and despite the scheduling challenges which it presents (Meredith & Shafer, 2013). Organizations
Amazon believes in keeping its marketing plan simple in order to be effective. Consequently, their marketing plan is based upon the 4 P’s (product, price, place, and promotion). Amazon’s product is to provide an unparalleled selection of any item that exists on the planet. Its prices are extremely competitive and often lower than traditional stores and it is more convenient for people to shop on the internet (place) than it is in a physical location. Finally, its promotion emphasizes big ideas, innovation, technology, and customer centricity, enabling it to market itself as the most convenient place for consumers to shop and satisfy their needs (Kerin & Hartley, 2015). This strategy targets
Countries disintegrate, place of worship and corporation fail, people become dysfunctional, descendants lose their direction, and mankind drift from God on behalf of one distracting reason; insufficiency of leadership. These disappointments are often for the reason that of the deficiency of instruction, appropriate leadership, and misperception on what Christian leadership subsists and exactly how that leadership is pertinent to every component of professional and personal life. From a Christian worldview perspective, Psalm 112:5 explains, “A good man deals graciously and lends; He will guide his affairs with discretion” (NKJ). A Christian manager should always keep in mind that bounteousness and admiration for God, demonstrates that one has placed trust in Him, and not our material possessions.
This course covers techniques used in analysis and improvement of the value-adding activities of an organization. Customer value is created or added only when the output from a process or set of processes results in something a customer is willing to pay for. The course focuses on techniques for efficient and effective process management, in both
In The Wall Street Journal, tech reporter Daisuke Wakabayashi (2014) describes how Apple is expanding its reach into the business market. “The iPhone has replaced the BlackBerry as the mobile phone of choice, as the iPad assumes tasks once reserved for PCs,” (Wakabayashi, 2014). Wakabayashi (2014) noted that “Apple is going mainstream” when it comes to the corporate world, and he profiles multiple large enterprises — including SAP, Nordstrom, and Cisco — that have rolled out iOS and other Apple devices to their
The company that I will be writing about is called Aleve. Aleve is an OTC drug that is made from the company known as Bayer. This medication is known for being a pain reliever that provides relief for a variety of condition. Just like any other company, Aleve has to be able to create a marketing plan. This plan has to be very strategic in order to gain customers and investors. The company must choose a market that they want to target. By doing this they must find out information about their competitors. This information will help them to come up with a marketing strategy that will tell customers why they should
1. A generous university benefactor has agreed to donate a large amount of money for student scholarships. The money can be provided in one lump-sum of $10mln, or in parts, where $5.5mln can be provided in year 1, and another $5.5mln can be provided in year 2.
Tobacco smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and diseases in the United States of America. Close to 480,000 Americans lose their life each year due to illness caused by smoking cigarette. (Healthy People 2020, 2010).
The main purpose of the Integrative Learning Project (ILP) is to introduce an authentic or fabricated company/industry to research. The company’s organizational setting includes the mission statement of the company, who the internal/external customers are, what aspects can
Note Exhibit 3, Year 2 cash flows, the “add total change in cash” is an incorrect number. It should be $1,371,350.
In recent years, the requirements of commercial and industrial operations in the production of services and goods have been subject to vast changes. In the present era of globalization and increasing international competition, a trend away from vertically integrated organizations has become more and more evident. In fact, most companies nowadays tend to solely concentrate on their own core competencies, outsourcing different steps of the production. However, including a great many of other organizational units to the production systems, has lead to rising complexity in terms of the operations management (Plenert, 2012).
In this executive summary, The Goal by Goldratt will be analyzed in detail. First, 10 operations management decisions as found on page 7 of the Heizer and Render textbook will be listed in column 1. Next, for each OM decision, examples from The Goal textbook that exemplify the type of problem or solution relevant to the OM area will be summarized in column 2. Finally, a scenario from my work life will be exemplified in column 3.
A sentiment common to almost any organization is that the one fact that remains constant is change. As society changes, and human understanding grows, any organization that maintains a static posture, assures its demise. Churches and Christian organizations are no exception. The gospel may remain the same, but the method for communicating it must speak to the audience to assure understanding. The Christian leader must be prepared to meet this challenge by incorporating an effective model for change into his theology of leadership in order to keep the ministry relevant and effective. Searching for such a change agent can prove to be challenging as well. To aid in this search, four
Leaders who desire to understand why and how people behave the way they do in the workplace must challenge his or her self to first develop an understanding of how people in an organization should be lead. To develop this understanding a leader can approach this subject by seeking to answer the question, “Should people be lead like they are machines or organisms?” Whichever side is taken to answer this question would significantly affect an individual’s ability to lead others. From an
The mission and daily operations in the healthcare industry varies from department to department. It is critical for employers and managers to learn and implement key components of the operational management to increase productivity, which in turn will yield greater results. Operations management is a vital component to the success of an organization. Managers must focus on identifying the weak areas of an organization and implement the most current strategic approaches, determine what business model works best within a department, place an emphasis on theories that motivate workers to met organizational goals, and the ensure the best practices are being used in the firm to produce optimal results. Operation management techniques are used to improve, increase and develop continuous development models that increase the productivity organizational growth. Models and ideals are used to help managers decide how to best utilize the labor pool, to perform tasks and patient treatments, logistic movement and IT support functions. This paper will examine how the principles of benchmarking, theory of constraints, six sigma, quality function deployment, business process reengineering, supply chain management, capacity scheduling and location planning, work
During the recent past period, academic researchers and practitioners devoted their efforts for improving the scheduling process and developing an effective approach. They were seeking to optimize scheduling problems through exploration and exploitation the solution space. The first section in this chapter presents two different optimization approaches that are able to solve and optimize job shop scheduling problem. The first type of optimization approaches is based on exact algorithms and they are usually used for simple and small size problem. Another type of approaches is based on more sophisticated algorithms that can be applied to more complex and larger problems. These approaches are denoted as approximate algorithms where the solutions may be optimal or near-optimal. Approximate algorithms can be classified into heuristic and meta-heuristic methods. The main purpose of this chapter is to present a comprehensive survey of different approaches available for solving the job-shop scheduling problem. It will be important also to identify the trend of research and the gaps that require further research in the second section of this chapter Jain and Meeran [12].
