The main characters of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are well known as being star-crossed lovers. The role of fate is mentioned many times throughout the play. The tragedy has been performed many times for hundreds of years. Although the ending is tragic, it was preventable. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths were not the result of destiny, but of their own bad decisions. One of the first bad decisions was made by Romeo, when a servant asks him to read a list of people invited to a Capulet party. Romeo reads the list and realizes that the woman he loves, Rosaline, is attending the party (Shakespeare 385).Romeo then decides to sneak into the party, eventually leading to him meeting, and falling in love with, Juliet. Romeo and Juliet believe they are completely in love, even though they’ve only known each other for an evening and decide to get married right away. Romeo declined because of his love for Juliet. Tybalt ended up killing one of Romeo’s good friends, Mercutio, which caused Romeo to cry out: “This days black fate on more days doth depend, this but begins the woe others must end.”(Shakespeare 428). Romeo was then given the punishment of exile from Verona for killing Tybalt. This slaying of Tybalt was another fatal decision. Juliet was devastated when hearing of her husband’s exile and ran to Friar Lawrence for help. She told the friar she was willing to die to be with Romeo, and together they decided to fake Juliet’s death. Their decision to inform Romeo after Juliet’s “death”, and not before, was another reason that this play ended
