This all changed in 1902 when Roosevelt took the side of the United Mine Workers in the Anthracite Coal Strike. Wilson knew that something had to be done since the coal supplies for winter were being threatened, and so he proposed both the operators and miners to accept an arbitration. The operators rejected but willingly gave in when Roosevelt threatened to seize the mines. This awarded the workers with a wage increase and lower working hours. The first sub-battle was the Battle of Orchard Knob. On November 23rd, General Ulysses S. Grant found out that Braxton Bragg was withdrawing some of his brigades. Ulysses saw the columns of Rebels marching away from Missionary Ridge. Ulysses assumed that they were on their way to support General James Longstreet near Knoxville. To stop them, Grant sent 14,000 Union troops to intercept the army of 600 Rebels at Orchard Knob. The Rebels put up a good fight, but they were heavily outnumbered, so they were eradicated. The workers who were known to scab were protected by people who were known as gun thugs. Gun thugs, private mine guards who also had full county deputy privileges, were able to work outside the walls of their employers. Outside of the mines they worked under Sheriff J.H. Blair. This was a man who made his allegiance to the business owners clear. The citizens of Harlan lost all faith they may have had about the impartiality of their law enforcement. In Harlan County during this time there was no such thing as neutral you were on one side or the other, therefore, if you wasn’t a gun thug, you were a part of the union. The miners began to arm themselves due to the police brutality and attack from fellow starving jobless miners. There was a lot of anger and blame that was passed around, therefore, small fights between gun thugs and the publicly employed law enforcement broke out. Also, scabbing miners were often beaten. The most violent unprovoked attack by mine workers occurred on May 5, 1931, and became known as the Battle of Evarts, in which three company men and one miner were killed. Have you ever thought about how your able to use a TV or lamp? There are people who have to work in mines or around dangerous machinery just so we can have that privilege. Thousands of miners and other people have been killed because of coal mining. Coal mining has brought some good thought taxes and jobs created. The most important effects of coal mining on the state of West Virginia are thousands of jobs being created, coal affecting West Virginia economically, and coal being used for energy.

“The coal industry has helped fuel this nation for 150 years, and coal can be used to heat our homes, power our economy, and protect our nation for at least another 150 years if we continue to use it.”- Tim Murphy. Coal has an interesting history in West Virginia, which has contributed significantly to the improvement and livelihood of West Virginians since its first discovery, which is now Boone County in 1742 by Peter Salley, more than a century before West Virginia, became a state. The coal industry has played a major role in the state’s economic, political and community history. The industry has also been a center of debate and the impact of unfounded criticism, giving rise to battles in the arenas of labor, environment and safety.

Before 1890 in West Virginia, you would not be able to see any signs of coal mining. However, after 1890 coal mining surged due to new legislative representatives favoring the use of land in an industrial sense. Coal mining was now dominating the southern region of West Virginia. In the beginning, coal mining did not seem to have many effects on the people or land; but, eventually people became very aware of the negative consequences that came from coal mining. People are now aware that coal mining in West Virginia was almost entirely detrimental to the environment as well as the community.
