1. What is motivating you to look at this time?
I recently left a private equity backed company due to a change in the company’s overall strategy. As a result of the change, my position was eliminated. 2. Why do you want to work at Taylor Communications?
I have been aware of Taylor for many years. I have also been a supplier to Taylor in two of my prior roles. Most recently, all of Taylor’s acquisition activity and transformational efforts has stimulated my desire to be part of what is being built at Taylor Communications. My deep insight into this industry, coupled with my background and experience, could help accelerate the transformation of the company. Although Taylor has been around for many years, I almost see the company as a “diamond in the rough”. I’m excited about the products, services and technology Taylor possesses to help companies communicate their message. I see Taylor as somewhat of a “great secret” in the marketplace. My current understanding of the people, business practices and capabilities of Taylor all contribute to my desire to at least investigate whether there is a good match between us or not.
3. What defines success as a leader?
My experience shows that the success of a leader is based on their ability to exhibit servant leadership in such a way that compels people to want to follow them into any situation or circumstance they are facing, with the belief that the leader will guide and shepherd the group in such a way that
These leaders think of their followers as partners and treat them as equals. As a result, followers take ownership of organizational outcomes. Organizational success is realized when everyone is doing what they do best. When a situation requires it, a servant leader might even take on the role of follower (ChangingMinds.org).
To be a successful servant leader one must have a true honest desire to want others around them to be successful. The major strength of the servant leader is their contribution of the organization they are leading. I believe this type of leadership really aligns
Leadership is the elaboration of group inspiration. One person entrusted as leader can implore the aid, and support of supporters in the accomplishment of a common mission. According to Gurdjian, Halbeisen, and Lane “Becoming a more effective leader often requires changing behavior. But although most companies recognize that this also means adjusting underlying mind-sets, too often these organizations are reluctant to address the root causes of why leaders act the way they do” (Gurdjian, Halbeisen, and Lane, 2014) However, today abundant businesses engross importance on the improvement of leaders. Some of the ultimate leaders were formerly followers, such as in instructive businesses. One aspect as leaders many have to contemplate in striving
One study found that servant leadership leads to higher levels of commitment to the supervisor and efficiency in work. My experience agrees with this finding. By exercising the four servant leadership practices mentioned above, I believe one will not just become a better leader, but also a better person as
Abstract: There are numerous definitions of leadership, all of which contain elements related to people (the leader and the follower(s)), communicating in person or by the written word, actions (organizing, directing, coaching, and/or motivating), and for a purpose (meeting a goal(s) or accomplishing a task(s)) (ADP 6-22) (Fisher 2015) (Bolden 2013) (Hogan 2005). Additionally, everything done occurs within a given context. Effective leaders are poised, proficient, pertinent, and practical in the application of the art of leadership. This means leaders are ready to engage the group with effective methods and
Leadership is the ability to inspire and focus members on a common goal, whether short term or long term and have the same vision. Leadership is more than telling or ordering, but having members believe and want to follow the same path as you. It’s a commitment to your people built on trust and respect. Many leaders shaped my personal leadership philosophy, to include several negative and positive experiences. Negative experiences from poor leaders and lessons learned on my part have uniquely shaped this vision. Difficult to be a good follower when your leader lacks competency, integrity, and your trust. If a leader takes credit for work other than their own, or forces and ideology onto others, but does not follow it themselves; these negative influences damage the trust and respect required by all leaders. However, positive experiences can also have a career lasting impact. A leader who inspires through personal actions and convictions can change how an entire unit operates without ever saying a word.
There are leaders and there are followers in life, a great example of a leader would be my Fire Chief Kenneth Everett. To be a leader you have to have many skills that set you apart from being someone that follows. You have to be able to talk to anyone on the department and know how they react to certain ways you talk to them. A Chief should be able to motivate anyone to want to continue doing something whether you just walked out of the roughest call you have ever been on or you have just lost interest in the Fire Department all together. You also have to be able to handle a large group or even a small group in some of the toughest environments.
Moreover, while taking the Leadership Foundations Class, there were many lessons that provided me with tools to be an efficient leader. However, when my teacher exposed the class to servant leadership, I immediately took interest in it. At this moment, I finally directed my leadership to embody the qualities of a servant leader. Some of which include: acting with humility, encouraging the new generation of young leaders, valuing diverse opinions, and serving others before
The key concept of being an effective leader or servant leader in these three videos were having a think to win mentality, and being able to apprehend the complexities of the group with the capacity to show the way to accomplish the goal. One of the first steps in becoming a memorable leader, in the author’s opinion, would be having a good attitude. The second step would be leading from behind which in turn would give a new perspective to the leader.
Great leaders don’t just tell they do, and I think that by leading with a servant heart means you do just that. You don’t just tell others that you’re the leader and expect them to follow you; you live your life in such a way that others want to look up to you as a leader in their life. You meet the needs of others and humble yourself always. A servant leader makes sure that all the people around them are set up for success in life.
Servant leaders are constructive, persistent, and motivating. They are also leaders who see complex, big pictures. (St. Thomas University Online, 2015). This makes them very engaging and full of energy which is a good trait as mentioned by Jack Welch in his 4 Es.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
What is the stimulus that encourages the emergence of a great leader? Robert Greenleaf’s theory of Servant Leadership places emphases on the individual, who is instinctively a servant.
It is known that individuals have different types of leadership styles. Some individuals are more successful when it comes to following others and some individuals are better at leading others. Being a successful individual is not only judged by the actions of completing a task but the ability to lead others.
To have great leadership, there needs to be a leader-follower relationship. The relationship can’t be effective without inspiration, involvement, and support from both participants. To develop this alliance, the leader must give extra effort to reach out to followers. The only way a leader can be successful is if the follower trusts the leader. The most important characteristic of a leader is to set a good example for their followers.
