Chapter 7 Case 7.1 Q1
New Hope Housing likely had strengths related to their employee development program, their effectiveness in housing people in need, and their niche for ensuring individuals who would typically be rejected housing. Some of their weaknesses likely related to their secured funding and current dependence on government funding. Some of their opportunities relate to finding solutions for permanent housing, as this is currently a struggle for the people they serve. Lastly, their threats likely also have to do with their government funding. As budgets change, money is moved around and can impact this organization for the better or for the worse.

Some of the things that appear to be new focuses are individuals with imminent risk of homelessness. This strategic plan was from 2011 right when the economic downturn was occurring and people were losing their jobs and homes.
Chapter 7 Case 7.1 Q5
New Hope Housing addresses several areas of the McKinsey framework for capacity. Specially, strategy, staff and leadership, funding, and advocacy are addressed within their plan. Although it is interesting, the infrastructure was not thoroughly discussed within their plan, that would need evaluated to address the additional programs and initiatives they seek to accomplish.
Chapter 7 Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy – Michael Porter
This article was really interesting as it discussed a matrix developed for creating strategies by a professor at Harvard. Michael Porter the creator, discussed the notion of how powerful this tool is because companies or organizations look at competition too narrowly. The five competitive forces include:
1. Threat of substitutes
2. Bargaining power of customers
3. Bargaining power of suppliers
4. Industry rivalry
Industries will look different with all of these forces. The strategy will change based on how these forces look for the organization and industry. These concepts can be applied across the board, and they help organizations from getting trapped into the latest trends and technology out there selling solutions. This matrix really helps to
The strategy of CAMBA’s Park Slope Women MICA Shelter is a long-term plan of sustained growth of customer care in New York City. They are strategic when it comes to meeting the pressing needs of New York City dwellers. To begin with, they have identified that mental illness and drugs and substance abuse renders many city dwellers homeless and desperate. Most of the dwellers are hopeless with nowhere else to turn to and CAMBA’s Park Slope Women Shelter comes in as a source of hope for them. This strategy reflects the correct planning on the side of their leaders. This is evident from the fact that market share should be just adequate to cater for the present needs of the community (Drucker et al., 2008). However, over the last few years they
The DC government has been implementing Rapid Re-Housing programs in response to the homelessness crisis that the nation’s capital has been facing for years. The Rapid Re-Housing models were implemented across the country through the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP), as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) of 2009 (Anderson, 2015). Rapid Re-Housing is mainly an intervention, informed by a Housing First approach. Housing First is a critical part of the community’s effective homeless crisis response system (Anderson, 2015). The program attempts to connect families and individuals experiencing homelessness to permanent housing through personalized programs of assistance that may include the use of limited-time
The first step we need to take is to establish a NFP entity with the primary mission of providing stable housing for up to 24 months to military veterans. The ability to provide this type of housing for veterans via a NFP entity will enable the organization to be eligible for a number of government funded grants such as the Veteran Administration’s Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program and the Illinois Energy Grant. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the “largest public housing authority in the nation” (Developments, 2015). In existence since 1934 (About NYCHA: NYCHA at 70, 2015), NYCHA is a low to moderate income public housing initiative consisting of 328 developments throughout all five boroughs of New York City. More than 400,000 residents benefit from these developments through the receipt of not only apartments but additional services provided by each development and New York City overall. Over recent years the NYCHA developments have been experiencing a reduction in government funding, forcing the organization to re-evaluate strategies addressing maintenance of old buildings (About NYCHA, 2015).
1) Convocation of the housing summit – to be able to immediately allocate $500,000 for the program the Mayor needed to summit all the components involved in this planning process. From the County committee, city staff, and any private organization related with the program.
Toward the end of the 2015 meeting of the Indiana General Assembly (“Session”), it became evident that a few advocacy organizations were seemingly misinformed and disconnected from IHCDA policy positions. Rather than addressing these issues individually, IHCDA seized the opportunity to develop a much broader working group of advocates and experts that are connected to housing and community development in Indiana. After receiving strong support and encouragement from several organizations, IHCDA formally organized the oracle of advocates and industry experts dubbing it the Indiana Housing and Community Development Coalition (‘Coalition”).
In looking at the City of Dallas Affordable Housing Programs, the focus of this report will be in the form of a two-part series. The first part will be a program evaluation that examines the quantitative numbers or measurable objectives, goals, & achievements as established by the City of Dallas Community Development & Housing Department over a five-year consolidated plan period; and the second part will be a program analysis that seeks to take this quantified data of the program evaluation and really measure how effective these Dallas housing programs have been in not only achieving pre-determined objectives and goals but in changing low-income area housing buying trends; through creating more housing choices for low-to-moderate income families; in bringing about more mixed-income neighborhoods; improving infill affordable housing development opportunities; thru providing financial and training opportunities of minority businesses; etc.
Awareness of the five forces can help a company understand the structure of its industry and stake out a position that is more profitable and less vulnerable to attack. By understanding how the five competitive forces that shape strategy influences profitability in a particular industry, executives can develop a strategy for enhancing their company’s long-term profits (Porter, 2014).
affordability in the area and create higher density housing with a planned 2,828 new dwellings. It plans to have diverse housing types for all socio economic groups to prevent exclusion and support the economic and social sustainability of the area.
The organization has earned numerous awards including a Best Practices Award in 1999 as well as awards of excellence in affordable housing. The DESC has provided personalized, integrated services to Seattle’s most marginalized people for over 30 years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the organization’s 2014 financial statements and make recommendations to sustain the organizations for the long term.
Another plan is the permanent supportive housing is permanent supportive housing that has now proven to be a successful and cost-effective solution to the homelessness crisis. This was first pioneered in New York City in the 1980s.
I must admit that going into this project, I was initially quite dubious of NYCHA's ability or even desire to improve living conditions. My skepticism stems from being a lifelong resident of Throggs Neck Housing, a development were problems are met with a plethora of excuses rather than any type of remedy. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I met members of the executive staff. Everyone was incredibly adept and committed to their jobs - they fully understood the gravity of their responsibilities. Most importantly of all, I sensed a true compassion and earnest desire to improve the standard
As we begin to strategically plan for our business, it is important for us to take a deep dive into our competitive environment to understand where we are strong competitively and where we are weak competitively. An analysis of the forces driving industry competition using M.E. Porter’s Five Forces Model will assist us in determining where the power lies in a business situation as we begin to plan. We must understand how they work in our industry and how they affect our particular situation. Whatever the collective strength of these forces is, our job as the strategists of the organization is to
With the new plan is it to ending homelessness by providing five years of renewed funding
At the request of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), we, Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), are happy to provide feedback and suggestions on ways to modernize the Department. HUD has numerous programs that are aimed at aiding strong, sustainable communities and community members, and IHCDA has worked diligently to identify the main issues, complications and inconsistencies within HUD programs that obstruct maximizing that mission.
