Cloud computing is an internet based computing which provides various applications and services like storage, servers, infrastructure, networking with low cost, on-demand self service, pay as you go model, location independent resource pooling, reasonable price , rapid elasticity etc. Cloud computing is one way to increase the capacity add capabilities without investing in new infrastructures like computer hardware involves storage memory, licensing for new software, training for a person and in a dynamic way.

The cloud computing industry evolved over the past fifteen years and according to (White, 2013) in the article, “A Cloud Retrospective”, the cloud industry was introduced out of the dot.com bubble burst at the beginning of the twenty-first century compelled internet-based companies to modernize their Information Technology (IT) Architecture and find more efficient IT operating solutions (White, 2013). (White, 2013), writes that Amazon entered the cloud market by introducing its Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2006. (White, 2013) states in 2007 there were disagreements by the experts on the true definition of cloud computing. In 2008 the cloud market expands to include more vendors (White, 2013). (White, 2013)

By 2020, Forbes (McKendrick, 2012) has estimated that the cloud market will be worth $270 billion; this suggests that the market is expanding rapidly and users are becoming more aware of this feature. Many people, though, still ponder over the exact purpose of cloud computing: Cloud computing is a group of offline servers that are networked together to allow data to be stored centrally. For example, Drop box is an established cloud storage company that allows users to store documents, images and videos on their servers. This type of cloud computing is known as ‘Software-as-a-Service’, which are business applications that are hosted by the provider and delivered as a service (Hurwitz, 2010). Hurwitz also mentions two other types of cloud computing: ‘Platform as a Service (PaaS)’ and ‘Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)’. ‘Platform as a service’ is where the consumer will create an application, using tools and software from the provider, then the provider will administer the consumer with networks, storage and servers. ‘Infrastructure’ as a service is where the provider will provide the consumer with physical computer or virtual machine.

Cloud computing has become a major topic of discussion and debate for any business or organization which relies on technology. Anyone connected to the Internet is probably using some type of cloud computing on a regular basis. Whether they are using Google’s Gmail, organizing photos on an Apple iPhone’s photo steam or searching the Web with Bing they are engaged in cloud computing. The interesting thing about cloud computing is it did not start as a technology for the business enterprise, but was driven by the public with services like Facebook. Over the last few years businesses have started to see the value of cloud computing causing it to become a major technology solution for businesses and organizations around the world.

Several years after the emergence of cloud computing, most of people still confuse with its concept because different research institutes defined the term differently. With the development of cloud computing, its concept evolves gradually in years. According to the Wikipedia, the most recent definition of cloud computing is “the delivery of services of the computing a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a utility over a network (typically the Internet).” Cloud computing, in one word, was termed as the many different types of virtualized applications and services that are moved into the “cloud” – a metaphor for the internet. Cloud computing providers maintain and control physical servers, and data is processed in the “cloud” provider’s environment which also delivers hosted services. The next area the business must evaluate is performance over time, cloud providers performance and ability to provide highly available services are critical, this is one major reason to moving to the cloud is the ability to have highly available services. The company must assess and determine what the cloud service provider can provide in terms of uptime along with the amount and location of data centers. In addition, the company must understand what tools and methods the cloud service provider provides the company to monitor the services and availability of the cloud network along with SLA’s that can be utilized to protect the company.

In this paper, I will briefly introduce what cloud computing is and some of its fundamental concepts (service models and deployment models). The later part of the paper will mainly focus on examining cloud computing impacts on business – the benefits it will bring, and the risks and challenges that go along with it.
