In this research paper I will be talking about databases, the different types and the effect it has on criminal justice. I will explain what a database is as well as some of the history. I will also be explaining who uses a database in the criminal justice field and show both the positive and negative effects the databases have on criminal justice. A database is a collection of data that is organized and is supposed to be organized in such a way that it resembles reality. An example is finding the amount of room on a flight, so you find one with a spare seat available. The database was first introduced in the 1960s with the access of storage disks. As technology advanced, interest in database grew. Charles Bachman founded the ‘Database Task Group’, which used databases among a group, and it allowed them to use it daily. In the late 1970s SQL came about and stands for a standardized query language. It was used to code databases and make queries, which took the information from the databases and joined tables together to make them simpler to use and show the relationship between the various tables. There is a thing called a database management system also known as DBMS, which are supposed to use software that is specifically designed to interact with other software applications as well as the user and the database to help analyze and capture data as it comes in. The sharing of information has continued to advance thanks to databases, which are always updated with information. According to an article on the eHow website entitled “Technological Advancements in Communications in the Criminal Justice System” by Claudia Sinclair, she writes, “These systems known as Law Enforcement Information Systems (LEINs) provide officers with current information that is useful in the field and during investigations.” The sharing of information content throughout the databases help improve the communication between the vast amount of departments and divisions in the criminal justice system. DNA has a huge impact on the criminal justice field, it helps to identify missing persons, perpetrators of crimes as well as identify victims.
